The History of Scottish Games

Modern Scottish Festivals have their roots in the mid-dle ages. We have reports

of athletic competition (“Games”) at many times and places when people gathered together; fairs, military musters (“wapenschaws”), even funerals! Games which now feature track and field events, music, and dance have been held in the village of Ceres (in Fife) since shortly after the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

Scottish Games as we know them today began to develop in 1781 when the Highland Society of Falkirk sponsored prize money and trophies for competitions in dancing, piping, and athletics during the town’s Fall Fair. In 1818 a Games was presented in St. Fillan’s with piping, athletics, and dancing (including the Sword Dance for the first time). Within a few years Gatherings were being held at many towns throughout Scotland. Many of these Gatherings are still being held today.

The increasing popularity of these events eventually led to attempts to standardize the rules of competition and judging. Sanctioning bodies were formed to develop uniform rules and maintain records, Highland dancing, piping, and drumming teachers and judges stand for regular examinations to maintain their certification. With renewed interest in Scottish harp and fiddle their sanctioning organizations are seeing new growth.

As Scots immigrated to far-flung lands they took their sport and

culture with them. Tradit ion tells us that Games were held near Ellerbe, North Carolina in the late 1700s; most sources state that t h e fi r s t G a m e s in t he U.S . were presented by Scot-tish emigrants living in Boston in 1853. One source does state that the Boston Scots had been meeting for

“traditional games” for several years before that. There is also a descrip-tion of the “First Sportive Meet” of the Highland Society of New York in the Emigrant and Old Countryman of October 19, 1836 which gives some indication that regular com-petition took place during the first half of the 19th Century.

By 1861 at least three other Caledo-nian Clubs had joined Boston – New York, Philadelphia, and Newark, New Jersey. The Civil War delayed the spread of these events, but by 1875 Highland Games were being held in at least 125 communities across America. These “Caledonian Games” generally included competitions in dancing, music, and athletics; the ath-letics could include foot races, hurdle races, wrestling, pole-vaulting, high and long jump, hop, skip and jump, putting the heavy stone, throwing the hammer and the light and heavy weights and turning the caber.

With the rise in intercollegiate athlet-ics in the late 1800s participation at Scottish Games went into a decline. Many events folded; the ones that survived refocused on their cultural heritage and expanded to become Festivals. Games and Festivals offer competition focused on traditional Scottish athletic events, dance and music; they have expanded to include

“fun” competitions, non-competitive tests of skill and strength, and histori-cal re-enactments.

The Scottish Games in the United States have grown because many people of Scottish descent still feel the pull of their ancestral homeland and heritage. The Games provide a connection to that heritage. For many, going to the Games is like going home to a family reunion.

Dragon Hillclimb is being held March 22-23 in Robbinsville, NC on a closed course road in the Joyce Kilmer National Park. More than 70 cars will be competing for trophies, cash pr izes and championship points as part of the Sports Car C lub o f A me r ic a - S out he a s t Division Time Trial Series. Ruth’s first home run, which he hit during Spring Training at the fairgrounds back in 1914.

George Herman “Babe” Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1895. He was raised in an orphanage because his parents couldn’t control him. In 1914 he signed a baseball contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In those days the Orioles were a minor league team in the International League.

In March 1914 the team held spring training in Fayetteville. Ruth was in Fayetteville for only about a month, but he always remembered it. It was the first time he had ever been out of Baltimore. Ruth later wrote about how much fun he had riding the elevators in his hotel.

According to one legend, the young and inexperienced Ruth didn’t know what to do on his own in Fayetteville, and so he followed around the team’s manager and owner, Jack Dunn. One of the team members said, “There goes Dunn’s new babe,” and the name stuck.

In the 1920s and 1930s, when he was the most famous baseball player in the world, Ruth frequently visited North Carolina in the off-season to hunt and play golf. And he always remembered his early days in Fayetteville when he was on the road to becoming a legend.

Vintage Baseball Game Free Event March 8 at 11:00am

Catch Fayetteville Baseball Fever by attending two Vintage Base Ball games at Arnette Park. Vintage Base Ball is baseball played by the rules and customs of the 19th century. These games will follow the 1864 rules as adopted by the National Association of Base-ball Players, which are similar to today’s modern game. However, players will be dressed in the traditional uni-forms of the past, and play barehanded using balls and bats meeting the 1864 requirements. No gloves here folks! But Nell wasn’t the first time the movies came calling. The silent feature St ark Love shot exclu-sively in the area. It was written, produced, and directed by Karl Brown, a protege of D. W. Griffith. Brown insisted on authenticity, using local, untrained “actors” (at $25 a week!) and shoot ing w ithout makeup. This rea l i sm separated Stark Love from the usual silent-film melodrama and is one of the reasons it is held in high esteem by film historians of the pre-talkie era.

legacy, Gardner appeared in more than 50 movies including Night of the Iguana, The Killers and Show Boat, and was married to Frank Sinatra and Mickey Rooney spanning a 50-year career as a leading Hollywood actress. She was born and raised in Johnston County, a rural area of central North Carolina, unt i l New York and Hol-lywood called her to fame. The museum tells the story of her l i fe with an extensive collect ion of memorabilia, and each item has a personal connection to Ava or her fami ly. More than 20,000 pieces of memorabilia are in the collect ion, including costumes l ike the dress f rom The Great S i n ner (wh ich showc a se s her 18 -inch wai st), mov ie posters and awards. The museum also showc a se s a m i x of pe r son a l items, including a gold-plated derr inger pistol given to her by John Huston to dif fuse tension b et ween R ich a rd Bur ton a nd Liz Taylor during the f i lming of Night of the Iguana, and an en-graved watch she gave to Sinatra.
