Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

Spend A Night In The Pink Lady’s Room, If You DareGuests checking in to Room 545 at the historic Omni Grove Park Inn

in Asheville often find they are not alone. The century-old mountain resort hasn’t overbooked them, they happen to be sharing the room with a guest who has been around, in spirit at least, since the 1920s. She’s known as the Pink Lady and she is a friendly ghost who seems to be fond of children. Legend has it she was a guest who fell, or was pushed, to her death from the fifth floor of the historic section of the property, which has an open atrium in the center of each floor. The Omni Grove Park Inn offers history tours of the property that mention the Pink Lady. The resort also hosts an event for Halloween weekend and many staff members will share tales with visitors who are curious about her. Spending time with the Pink Lady is the perfect overnight stay for visitors who want to have some frightful fun during the Halloween season in North Carolina. The spirit appears in a flowing, pink gown and has made her presence known to hundreds of guests and employees during the years. She’s a mischievous ghost, often turning off lights, closing doors and generally watching over the happenings at the hotel. The Omni Grove Park Inn celebrates 100 years in 2013 with a yearlong celebration the Pink Lady will definitely attend.

“The most comprehensive way to learn where movies were made in North Carolina.”

--Lawrence Toppman, Charlotte Observer

The 160-plus entries in this travel guide are arranged geographically

and include information about what movies and television series were

fi lmed at each site.

Alamance County Locations - Snow Camp Historic Site Drama Road Snow Camp (336-376-6948; www.snowcampdrama.com) Outdoor theatrical productions are offered during the summer months. Ye Old Country Kitchen is open year-round It serves lunch and dinner on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday and all three meals on Saturday.

Bring an appetite for history, theatre, and down-home cookin’ when you visit Snow Camp.

Located on the north bank of Cane Creek, Snow Camp is an 18th-century settlement named by hunters who camped here during the winter of 1748, when the camp was covered with two to three feet of snow.

Today, Snow Camp interprets colonial and antebellum life through living-history and theatrical productions. Its grounds include an indoor theatre and an outdoor amphitheater where scenes from Stephen King’s Children of the Corn II Final Sacrifice were filmed. Two historical dramas - The Sword of Peace, about the American Revolution, and Pathway to Freedom,

about the Underground Railroad—are performed during the summer months.

Also on the grounds is Ye Old Country Kitchen, hailed as one of North Carolina’s best down-home restaurants” by UNCTV. The homey restaurant appears in Vampires Anonymous, a comedy about a vampire who attends a 12-step program to overcome his forbidden appetite. Burlington natives Dean and Starr Jones executive-produced the independent film, which was a hit on the festival circuit. The Joneses are professional makeup and special-effects artists who also produce The Original Hollywood Horror Show

WHAT IS Punkin’ Chunkin’?This year the 2013 Punkin

Chunkin has been moved from a 14 acre festival ground to a 42 acre. The new location is (for GPS purposes) 811 Settawig Road in Brasstown, NC. This location has afforded us the means to expand our festival activities to include air plane rides, zip lines, miniature mo-tor bike racing, air soft pellet target range and a demonstration by the Cherokee Tribe to name a few. The larger area gives us more parking, more crafters and food vendors as well as a pristine mountain setting. Saturday will showcase the locals “Chili Cook Off” and “Anything Pumpkin” contest as well as the

Joyce Kilmer Memorial ForestThe Joyce Kilmer Memorial

Forest, near Robbinsville, North Carolina, preserves one of the largest stands of old-growth trees in the eastern United States. Part of the Nantahala National Forest, the 3,800-acre Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is a paradise for walkers, with trails that lead beneath giant trees, some of which are more than 300 years old.

This tract miraculously escaped the lumbering of the 1920s which resulted in the clear-cutting of much of the surrounding areas. Today, the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is home to more than 100 species of trees, including virgin stands of sycamore, basswood, oak, and yellow-poplar. The largest tulip poplars are more than 20 feet in circumfer-ence and over 100 feet tall. Beneath these giants, the forest floor is carpeted with wildflowers, ferns, and moss-covered logs.

An easy, two-mile trail winds through the Forest, forming a figure-eight. At the center is a plaque commemorating the poet Joyce Kilmer, for whom the forest is named. Kilmer was a World War I hero and author of the famous poem, “Trees.” The Forest was dedicated to him in 1935 by the US Forest Service.

LocationFrom Robbinsville, take NC 143 West. After about 12 miles, turn right on Joyce Kilmer Road (SR1134). Go two miles and turn left at the signs for the Forest. www.grahamcountytravel.com

famous “Pie Eating Contest”. With all the children’s activities, such as the petting farms, inflatable’s, and games, this is definitely a family fun filled adventure for 2 full days.

So, exactly WHAT IS Punkin’ Chunkin’ you ask?? It started in 1986 when a group of men in a Delaware blacksmith shop began to argue about who could throw some-thing the farthest. The challenge was on and the men began to create their machines. In November of that year the first Punkin’ Chunkin’ contest was held with three teams and limited spectators. The event grew and spread into other areas. The World Champion Punkin Chunkin Association (WCPCA) was formed and last year thousands of teams competed in sanctioned events across the continent.

There’s even an authorized book that details the History of Punkin Chunkin’.

What do you use to chunk a pun-kin? Whatever contraption, similar to a trebuchet, you can dream up and build to catapult your punkin the longest distance and take home the coveted trophy.

Hayesville, the seat of Clay County, is just a short 15 mile drive from Murphy, NC and only about 9 miles from Hiawasssee, Georgia. So there’s plenty to do and see while you’re here. Give us a call or email us and we’ll be happy to make recommen-dations for lodging or tell you about great places to eat.
