    ISES 2009 Calgary

    In the following pages you will find a summary of ISES 2009 that occurred in Calgary June 9-11, 2009.

    The event brought over 350 students from 30 countries together to learn, debate and discuss

    pertinent energy topics and issues. The event summary is broken into the following sections:

    Program Summary

    On June 11 - 13, 2009, the International Student Energy Summit hosted over 400 students at an event

    that saw speakers, sponsors and attendees come together to share knowledge and exchange ideas on

    the future of energy.

    The summit was kicked off on Wednesday evening with the opening ceremonies and a presentation by

    Alex Steffen who spoke about student leadership and innovation in the future of energy.

    Thursday brought 25 speakers presenting 3 keynotes and 8 workshops that allowed attendees to

    customize a unique learning program for themselves. These workshops covered topics from finance,

    regulation and sustainability to global energy cooperation to technology and innovation.

    Friday was filled with 21 speakers in 3 keynote and 9 workshop presentations. Two special activities

    complemented the program this day; the Suncor Energy Sustainability Case Competition and the

    Canada School of Energy and Environment Global Energy Debate gave the students an opportunity to

    participate in important discussions.

    The summit wrapped up on Saturday with four workshops and 2 keynote presentations, including an

    address from former president of Mexico, Mr. Vicente Fox.

    Attendance

    In total, 412 delegates attended the International Student Energy Summit 2011 (including speakersand special guests).

    The majority of the Summit delegates were from Canada; however there was also representation frommany other countries around the globe.

    The majority of the delegates who attended the International Student Energy Summit had bachelor

    degrees; however there were also delegates with diplomas, Masters degrees, certification, and

    doctorates.

    While the Summit attracted a large number of Business and Engineering students, many other areas of

    study were represented by faculties such as Arts & Humanities, Environmental Studies, Biological

    Sciences, and more. This cross-disciplinary approach was a key factor in the success of ISES.

    ISES 2011 Vancouver

    In the following pages you will find a summary of ISES 2011 that occurred in Vancouver June 11-13,

    2011. The event brought over 400 students from 35 countries together to learn, debate and discuss

    pertinent energy topics and issues. The event summary is broken into the following sections:

    Program Summary

    On June 9-11, 2011, the International Student Energy Summit and University of British Columbiahosted approximately 400 students at an event that saw speakers, sponsors and attendees cometogether to share knowledge and exchange ideas on the future of energy.

    The summit was kicked off on Wednesday evening with the opening reception and a presentation byDr. Mark Jaccard who proposed strategies to address the climate risk.

    Thursday brought keynotes, panel presentations and a series of workshops that allowed attendees tocustomize a unique learning program for themselves. These workshops covered topics fromtechnology and innovation to global energy dynamics to markets and regulation. Delegates finishedthe day at British Columbia Institute of Technology with the Smarter Grids for Smarter Communitiespresentation and a banquet dinner and keynote remarks by environmentalist and human rightsactivist Dianne Dillon-Ridgely.

    Friday was filled with more informative presentations and interactive sessions such as the CenovusInnovation Space which gave students an opportunity to participate in important discussions. Fridayclosed with an evening at the Museum of Anthropology.

    The summit wrapped up on Saturday with a special interview by Peter Mansbridge, ChiefCorrespondent, CBC News, with Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Nobel Peace Prize recipient. Saturday also sawthe conclusion of the FortisBC Community Energy Challenge and the Future Energy Leaders paneldiscussion.

    The event has received overwhelming positive feedback and support from its speakers and attendees.Our attendees have commended us on the program, the execution, and the overall quality of thisevent.

    A selection of statistics from the post-event survey:When asked to rate the overall quality of the International Student Energy Summit:97.2% said that the Summit was Excellent or Very Good (top two boxes in a five-point scale)

    When asked to rate the overall value the Summit provided, relative to the price paid:91.4% said that the value of the Summit was Excellent or Very Good.

    When asked to rate the overall organization of the International Student Energy Summit:88.6% said that the overall organization of the Summit was Excellent or Very Good.

    When asked to indicate the likelihood of attending future Summit events:80% said that they were either Extremely Likely or Very Likely to attend.

    When asked to indicate the likelihood of recommending future Summit events to friends andcolleagues:97.2% said that they were either Extremely Likely or Very Likely to do so.

    A selection of comments: It was very informative, especially for someone new to the industry. The general ambience of the summit was very positive. Many of the speakers were

    phenomenal and I learned a great lot from the experience and met a lot of people from all

    over the world. So well-run. Great venue. Great speakers. I liked how the speakers did not "talk down" to the

    delegates in lectures or in face-to-face conversation. They did not treat us like kids. They

    seemed to (correctly) assume that we had some background knowledge of the topics

    discussed. Excellent way to meet students that share similar ideals in regards to sustainability and

    finding new ways to improve current energy processes. The sobering truths that were conveyed are so important to be told to your generation with

    no "green washing". We NEED to be told the severity of the problems we have. Excellent speakers, well organized and great discussion.
