Where would we be without our besties? They are the ones that have been with us through all the goods and the bads, they laugh and cry with us, pick us up when we’re down or broken-hearted, they celebrate with us when we get a new job, fall in love, have a baby or even just buy a new pair of shoes! And maybe they’ve been there since forever, when life being tough was defined by breakouts, breakups, bad hair days and braces.

Life wouldn’t be the same without these precious people by our side, so in this issue we salute our girlfriends, our besties, or indeed, our bridesmaids-to-be. There are some great tips for them too, such as planning the best bachelorette party… so if you’re newly engaged and planning on asking them to be at your side when you tie the knot, perhaps leave a copy of this issue on their coffee table! The wedding date is set! Now the planning begins. It’s such an exciting time in your life, but also one that can cause stress to both you and your loved ones. You now face the dilemma that has stressed brides since the beginning of time. Some of you may know from the day that diamond ring is slipped on your finger who will be at your side on your wedding day (besides your husband to be, of course) but others may not have such a clear idea. Pressure can come from every angle… your mother wants you to include your sister or cousin Sara, your mother in law to be expects her daughter will be included and quite frankly, none of them are on your short list. So what do you do? How do you choose your bridesmaids?

This really doesn’t have to be a difficult process.

Most important is that you include those people to whom you feel closest. You want people with you that love and support you, both individually and as a couple. Of course, this may be your sister or your cousin or both, but being family doesn’t necessarily mean they are the first choice. So first of all, remove the “obligatory” tag, it simplifies the process immediately. This may require some smoothing over with the mothers or whoever is expecting that certain people be involved, but it is your day right? So stand your ground on this one as you are the one that needs to be most happy with your choice.

Once you have settled that matter, and if you still have a number of people to choose from, then consider the responsibilities expected of your attendants. Generally the matron of honour organises your bridal shower and or hen’s party and is basically a stalwart at your side throughout the entire planning process and on the day. So you need to be certain that the person you are considering is up to the job. It’s all very well just to have your

bestie, but if she isn’t the most reliable, then perhaps reconsider! And to a certain degree, the same can be said of the rest of your attendants. You really require girls you can rely on prior to and on the day.

Consider also, your fiancé’s choices. There may be choices that are obvious to you based on his. And don’t be afraid to have more or less attendants than him, uneven numbers are okay! And let’s face it, those matchy matchy bridesmaid and groomsmen photos will never make into a frame in their home, so it’s definitely not a necessity for each of them to have a partner on the day.

Finally, you need to consider your expectations of them. Do you expect your attendants to devote a significant amount of time and money to your wedding? Are you having a huge wedding that will require a large amount of their time and energy in helping you or a small and simple ceremony where you will require much less of them? Their work, lifestyle and family commitments may mean they are not able to participate to the level you expect of them and this is something you need to ascertain early on so as not to put anyone under pressure and cause undue stress to both yourself and them.

Remember, you are considering these girls to be your attendants because you’re close to them. So you should already have the type of relationship that allows you to be honest and upfront with them. Allow them an “out” if they consider the responsibility too much for them and try not to be upset by their choice. They are actually doing the right thing by you; as a good friend, bridesmaid or otherwise, always will.

Okay, you’ve decided. Now the fun part - asking them!

A little bit of glitter never hurt anybody, and this gorgeous little glitter heart bag is the perfect way to ask your friend to be your bridesmaid!

You will need: Calico bag. Glue. Glitter. Scissors. Paint brush. Pencil. Paper. Draw and cut a heart shape out of paper, or draw free hand if you are comfortable. Cocktail makingStay in the kitchen and bring out the cocktail shaker! Decide on a select number of cocktails you would like to try, and ask guests to bring an item for each and get mixing. Experiment with combinations and make up names for the successful ones. Just make sure you have plenty of iced water and yummy nibbles on hand.

Strike a poseOrganise a model makeover party. Have professionals come in and do hair and makeup and then get your Hollywood glam on and have a photo session. For a slightly more risqué version, you could arrange for a boudoir shoot for the bride-to-be, something to surprise her new husband with on the wedding day.

Head to the races We all love the opportunity to get dressed up and what better place to do that than at the races. Get your best dress on, top it off with a fabulous fascinator, and spend an afternoon with your bride and besties, sipping on champagne, having a little flutter and cheering the gees-gees on.

That’s the ticketDoes she love musicals or theatre or does she have a favourite band that’s currently touring? Surprise her with a ticket to the show or concert. This may take some effort and planning on your behalf, and possibly a night or two away for those involved, but it’s just a one off thing, right? Yeah right… who doesn’t love a girly weekend away!

It’s all you’ve ever dreamed of, getting married in an exotic location such as Fiji or Thailand or France… or at George Clooney’s residence on Lake Como… okay, THAT one may not be a reality, but the rest are if you plan it right. And when planning a destination wedding, PLANNING is what it’s all about.

This is a not a solo flight You captain, need a co-pilot. And your co-pilot, otherwise known as your wedding planner/consultant, will be your navigator throughout the planning process, and will require a strong grasp of the customs, legalities and language of your chosen country, especially if you are unable to visit it prior to your wedding. This person needs to be reliable and able to listen and work with you to create the wedding you’re envisioning.

Word of mouth recommendations are invaluable in this situation, so if you know of anyone who has married in the same location, don’t hesitate to talk to them about their experience for more information.

The early birdTravelling abroad, especially when a large group of people are involved, really does require a great deal of planning. If you hope to have everyone staying at the one resort, you will need to ascertain guest numbers early on to be able to secure group bookings. The same will apply for your ceremony and reception if at a different location to your accommodation. For ease of planning, a resort offering the complete package (often with wedding consultant) would be the ideal stress free choice.

When in Rome You’ve travelled thousands of miles to an exotic location for your day, so don’t be tempted to have good old roast meat and three veg as your wedding dinner. Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the foods and culture of the country and enhance your day by sharing these new experiences with your guests. And let’s face it, those photos of one of your loved ones tasting for the first time garlicky snails in France or having a sip of Kava in Fiji will most likely be priceless!

It’s always sunny in SpainThis is not always the case, so don’t just assume the weather will be perfect in your chosen location on your day. Find out for certain. Your wedding planner should be able to provide you with this information and so should Google. A hurricane could really dampen your dream of a sun kissed ceremony on the golden sands of a Caribbean beach.

Keep your guests in the loopWhile it’s lovely to have an element of surprise about your day,

when it comes to a destination wedding, your guests need to know almost as much as you. Send out save the dates, including your chosen destination and follow them up with invitations filled with travel and accommodation advice. Include information about the region and places to visit for those that might stay longer. Another point to consider is guests may have travelled a great distance to share your day with you, so perhaps forgoing creating a gift registry would be a nice way to let them know just how much you appreciate that!

Go with the flowOn any wedding day, even with all your careful planning, there is a chance that something may go awry. Add to that a foreign country, mix in language barriers, and throw in a dash of different cultures and yes, there could be an element of your day that doesn’t go quite how you planned it. But don’t let it ruin your day. Think of it as something that made your day unique, a memento if you will. If you can, correct the problem with the aid of your planner or wedding party and if not… relax, try and laugh it off and just get down that aisle and get married.

brazen blueberryIngredients:5 cups fresh blueberriesZest of 1 lemon5 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice1 ½ cups white sugar

Method:Place 2 cups of blueberries in a high-sided saucepan, and mash with a potato masher. Add the remaining blueberries along with the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring frequently until the jam reaches setting point.

playful peach + mangoIngredients:6 peaches peeled, halved, pitted, and cut into pieces2 mangoes, peeled and cut into pieces3 cups sugar1 tablespoon. lemon juice½ tablespoon salt¼ teaspoon cinnamonSplash of lime juice

Method:Working in batches, pulse peaches and mangoes in a food processor. Transfer to a small saucepan, and add sugar, lemon juice, and salt. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Boil, continuing to stir, until jam thickens and reaches setting point.

plum passionIngredients:1 ½ kg fresh plums 1 ½ kg sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 30g butter100ml cold water Method:Wash plums and cut in half, removing stone. Place plums, lemon juice and water in a large, deep, heavy based pot and bring to the boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and simmer until the plums have softened, about 40 mins. Keep on low heat and add sugar. Stir continuously until sugar has dissolved. Stir in the butter to help reduce frothing. Turn up the heat and stir continuously until the mixture boils and reaches setting point.

Divide the jam into clean glass jars. Allow to cool, then top with lids. When the jam cools to room temperature, store in the refrigerator and enjoy within 2 weeks.

*Setting point: When the jam begins to thicken, place a small amount of the jam onto a cold saucer. If it jells and seems thick, it’s ready. If not, continue to cook the jam for a minute or two longer. Test again. Repeat until the jam is thickened.

Floral flopYou’re missing a bouquet or your flowers have wilted. Pull flowers from the table settings and the other bouquets to create a new bouquet. If it stands out from the rest as a little more unique, then make it yours!

Ripped a ruche?The tipsy bridesmaid stood on the back of your gown and ripped it and there’s no time to sew it up? Grab some tape! Okay it’s not glamorous but it will get you to the church in almost one piece. Tape the ripped piece together on the inside of your dress and no one will be the wiser.

Feeling faint?You’re standing up at the altar, and the room starts to spin. Just sit down. Simple as that. Don’t try and tough it out, thinking it will pass. Chances are it won’t and you’ll end up on funniest home videos. So grab a seat, be it in the front pew of the church or even on the floor. Ask for a glass of water and maybe a sweet to give you a sugar boost and eat as soon as possible after the ceremony. To avoid feeling faint, remember to eat before the ceremony and keep hydrated.

Cake-tastropheSomeone broke the decorations on your cake, or the cake maker mixed weddings up and gave you the cake topper from a vampire-goth wedding. There’s no time to create a new cake, so remove the offending items and use fresh blooms and greenery to redecorate. The alternative is to send someone out to buy a ready-made cake from the local cake shop.

Ring wrangleThe temperature’s risen and fingers have swollen and now the wedding band that fit perfectly prior to the day will not slide on! To avoid standing at the altar while your other half struggles to get your wedding band past your knuckle, use lotion and moisturise your hands or that finger at the very least, prior to walking up the aisle.

Music mayhemThe reception venue’s sound system blows out. Seriously you think? That won’t happen! It can and it might. It shouldn’t take long to fix, but while it does, speed up the speeches, cut the cake or plug in an iPod for some background music so the party vibe doesn’t fall flat.

Transport trialsThe limousine company has called to say it’s broken down or been in an accident and won’t make it on time. This is really an easy fix, because everyone you know owns a vehicle. It may not be a cream stretch limousine, but Grandad’s 1990 Holden will get you to the church on time and let’s face it, you’ll make Grandad’s day and you’ll get married. Which is what it’s all about.

When your budget isn’t blooming and you’ve got to make the cut, consider snipping back on your flowers. Visit your florist or your local supermarket and buy loose flowers to create your own bouquet. You can add your own personal style and if your colour scheme isn’t restrictive then you have free rein to createany kind of bouquet you like!

bridal boundariesEditor Mel’s thoughts on wedding etiquette.

I was talking to a friend recently, who also happens to be a wedding celebrant, and our topic of choice was wedding etiquette. In particular, the do’s, but mainly the don’ts of guests and even worse, the non-guests. I have some of my own pet peeves when it comes to weddings, such as guests getting in the way of photographers (yes, I can hear photographers everywhere cheering) and non-guests finding themselves a seat in the rear of the church (being a public place, who can stop them?) to watch the ceremony.

So it was with great interest that I listened to my friend speak about such matters, as who better to witness all the “don’ts” of a wedding than the celebrant themselves? And of course, often the task falls on them to gently but firmly guide one’s guests in the right direction. So how far is too far and do we all have different boundaries when it comes to weddings?

Let’s play with some hypothetical scenarios, just to test how broad your boundaries really are…

You, the bride, having just exited the white stretch limousine, are about to walk into the church behind your bridesmaids. A group of people, acquaintances, friends of friends, have gathered outside to watch you arrive. You smile and wave. And that’s all it takes. Suddenly the back row of the church is filled with people you really don’t know and they are about to witness one of the most important moments in your life. A moment that others you care about missed out on because you could only invite a limited number of people…

Hmm. A little annoyed or a lot?

And while on the subject of seating… you’ve chosen a venue with limited seating, just enough for parents and grandparents to sit, only to discover after you’ve walked up the aisle that the people seated directly in front of you are not in fact family. Someone stole their spot!

smattering of phone flashes or a phone itself blocking the view of the photographer and he misses the shot? From my celebrant friend: “I watch photographers who are being paid well to get good shots having to wait until guests get out of the way... often meaning they lose important, candid shots.”

You post a cute shot of you and your new husband on Instagram or Facebook to let all your friends know you’re officially newlyweds, only to find 30 friends beat you to it already.

So… how are you feeling now?

If you’re already feeling a little hot under the collar just reading these scenarios, imagine how you would feel if they actually occurred on your day! So what to do? How do we create boundaries to politely keep our guests in check?

First of all, use your stationery - a cute poem on your invite, advising people your ceremony is technology free. Another option would be to ask your MC to request this prior to the

ceremony. And maybe a couple of cute ushers at the church door might be just enough to distract those wannabe guests. Finally, talk to your celebrant and ask for their help and advice. Tell them your concerns and they will most likely already have the answers for you. After all, they’re the experts in this! Most of all, make your wishes clear to all concerned before the wedding day. Call on your bridal party and family to help. The more people on the same page the better! I leave you with words borrowed from my very wise friend the celebrant, ones that she uses regularly in ceremonies. Please, feel free to use them, I know she wouldn’t mind!

“Today we celebrate the best of what it means to be human. Today we celebrate love. I invite you to be truly present at this special time. Please, turn off your phones and put down your cameras. The photographer will capture how this moment looks — I encourage you all to capture how it feels with your hearts, without the distraction of technology. Afterwards feel free to capture the afterglow... and maybe wait until tomorrow before you share them with the fabulous world of Facebook.”

cool thingsHow the winter months can inspire your wedding theme.

While it doesn’t really get to below zero temperatures, nor does snow fall on the surrounding hills; there is a marked difference in the weather during the winter months in tropical Queensland. And in comparison to the more humid and unsettled weather of summer, winter can provide you with beautiful clear days and a temperature that makes wandering about in a full length gown and a three piece suit far more enjoyable. While those benefits are clearly obvious, there are other elements of your day that can also benefit from a winter wedding.

Though our region offers all things tropical in a spectacular manner, it doesn’t necessarily have to dictate our wedding theme. We all love a good frangipani, shell and sand theme, but winter can offer you the opportunity to explore other options for your day that you might not have otherwise considered.

Turn your reception green with a forest/bush theme. Use natural elements, such as pine cones, which work beautifully as place card holders, or filling up vases, or simply scattered at the base of candles.

Interesting shaped branches laid along the table or in vases, branches with berries or interesting seed pods will work well here too; moss, real or artificial: potted ferns or even baby pine trees in pots can make stunning centrepieces combined with the right elements. Use timber - a cake board or table numbers cut from a tree branch brings the outdoors in beautifully.

Other elements that will inspire a winter feel; cast iron pots filled with greenery, metal coffee urns, vintage tea cups or terracotta pots filled with candles. Fragranced candles can evoke the sense of a season or theme just by their scent and create a sense of warmth and intimacy like nothing else can.

Warm up your guests with a scrummy hot drinks station. Have a selection of teas, hot chocolate (don’t forget the marshmallows) and coffee. Chocolate coated coffee beans add a nice touch and will have the guests sniffing appreciatively the moment they walk into the reception. Turn your favours into little bundles of wintry goodness. Make your own tea mix and pop them into personalised bags.

Your own flowers can also be wintry in their look. Cooler tones, such as whites, the silvery greys and dark greens will add a touch of winter class. For the budget conscious, create a unique bouquet with interesting foliage and use less flowers.

One important thing to remember is quality control. Don’t forget to test the hot chocolate!

Cane wreath – this one was purchased at Earthborn. Foliage and flowers – your local florist would also be able to provide all this and more, we foraged foliage and purchased flowers at Coles and Spotlight.

Place flowers and foliage through the cane, pushing in firmly. Work your way around the wreath (we did this with it hanging, so we could check even distribution of flowers), adding more and more until you have the fullness you desire. By using mainly foliage and adding in artificial flowers, this was an extremely cost effective project and as you can see by the result, a pretty successful one as well!
