A lmost five years ago, Leslie, a hairdresser, became friends with Kyle’s sister Kara while doing Kara’s hair for her wedding.

Through spending time with Kara, Leslie and Kyle met and became friends, then fell in love.

After dating for a few years, Kyle and Leslie had been discussing getting married. In July 2013, Kyle went to Leslie’s house for a typi-cal night — or so Leslie thought. They had dinner and watched Jeopardy as they had on most nights, and then went on a walk. Back at the house, sitting on a kitchen barstool, Leslie looked up and Kyle was holding a ring. It took her a moment to realize what he was holding. He said, “I love you. Will you marry me?” She replied, “Of course!” And the wedding plan-ning began.

Two months later, Kyle and Leslie stood in front of an intimate group of friends and family at Maplehurst Farm and said their vows. Leslie said their friends and family really came together to help them carry out the day they dreamed of. Leslie’s friend Mollie made their wedding cake; Leslie’s mom’s friend Christine made the bouquets, boutonnieres and flower arrange-ments; Kyle’s mom Sandy coordinated the food

preparation. On the wedding day, everyone in the kitchen was a close friend.

The venue, Maplehurst Farm, is a six-acre Skagit Valley farm located beside the Skagit River. It features a dramatic maple tree-lined driveway and views of Mount Baker. “The venue had the feel we wanted: cozy, rustic and a little shabby,” Leslie said.

The rustic feel Leslie described was embel-lished with details like candles set in mason jars and a large chandelier and white lights hanging from the center of the barn.

Leslie ordered her wedding dress from Etsy because she liked the lace detail, simplicity and elegance of the dress. She took it to Isla at the Perfect Fit a few times for alterations and soon it fit like a glove. The photo grapher recommended she have something warm to wear since their photos would be outside, so she ordered a faux fur shrug from Etsy, once again, and fastened it with a brooch Kyle’s grandma lent her. She said this satisfied her “something old and something borrowed.”

The venue had the feel we wanted: cozy, rustic and a little shabby.

Mendelssohn’s Wedding March in C Major begins, and the guests stand and turn, craning to see you. You take

those first few steps down the aisle, and it sur-rounds you, moves with you. You feel it on the top of your slippers and around your shoulders — the dress you shopped for, tried on, fell in love with, maybe abandoned for a while and finally put on for this most special of days. Maybe you always knew what you wanted, and maybe you made yourself crazy worrying about how it would flat-ter or camouflage. Maybe you chuckled at photos of the crochet-and-eyelet mini-dress your Aunt Joan wore, and suddenly felt panicky that you’d be wearing a modern-day version of her 70s nightmare. Whether you’re having a dress specially made or you’re buying from a boutique, renting or making your own, the dress you think you want and the dress you end up loving may not be the same thing.

Most bridal boutiques offer consultants in addi-tion to salespeople, or train salespeople in bridal consulting. If you’re buying from an outlet or less personal venue, you might be on your own. Take an objective, supportive friend along to help you. The first step is to educate yourself on all the dif-ferent styles of dresses and try on an example from each style. Narrowing down your choice from Anything White to just a-lines will make your final decision a little easier.

The styles

The Sheath, and Empire waistBoth fall straight through from the waist. The sheath is columnar, classic, with a narrow profile. The empire is fitted around the bust and then falls straight with a nice flow (the costumes in Jane Austen-inspired movies are often empire-waist dresses). All three work well on a rectan-gular body, in which the hips, bust and waist all fall in a line. You don’t have to be a stick figure to pull off these narrow profiles — cut away from the body in layers, all three can be very flattering on a variety of body times. If you’re tall, a clean, straight sheath will keep you from looking too cutesy or overdone. If you’re short, an empire waist and straight sheath will give you length.

Mermaid or TrumpetThe descriptors “mermaid” and “trumpet” are used in bridal circles interchangeably. This is the perfect dress for curvy body types, as it is tight through the waist, hips and thighs, and then flares at the calf or ankle. Often the mermaid is accented with ruched layers, tulle, and other layers at the flare. A celebratory silhouette, the mermaid fits nicely, and moves with you.

Ball gownThe classic for brides want-ing a full-on princess experi-ence. The choice of profile for Disney and Princess Diana, the ball gown makes a big entrance and adds drama to photos. Cut with a close

waist and with layers cascading down, it’s a flat-tering style for many body types, particularly those who want to emphasize a slim waist and want to minimize hips and thighs. Ball gowns are an excellent choice for women who have small bustlines, as they can add a little line and shape where it’s needed. Plus-sized women look great in them as well, especially if the dress material is substantial, like shantung or heavy satin.

The A-LinePerfect for so many body types, the A-line gives definition on larger bodies and makes less curvy bodies seem more defined. It’s a great classic style, perfect for brides wanting a more vintage feel. A wrapped bodice with an A-line skirt can be par-ticularly flattering on voluptuous women. Adding ruching or pleating to the skirt can really add to the dress’s flattering effect.

If you’re going with a seamstress, communication is really important. Just because your dressmaker makes dresses doesn’t mean she or he knows what you want by instinct. You have to learn the lingo of the dress business, and give plenty of clear direction. Choose someone who comes highly rec-ommended specifically for bridal gowns, and listen to their input about fabrics and styles: heavier fabrics, like velvet, can add unwanted bulk, or possibly camouflage flaws. It all depends on how your seamstress cuts the dress.

The Look

AccentsBe careful with accents. That line of beaded roses can suddenly call attention to exactly the part of your body you’re trying to de-emphasize. A big bow can make your petite figure look over-whelmed. Knowing how to accent your dress, and what accents will look on you, will take some trial-and-error. Try on dresses and ask questions.

NecklinesSweetheart, boat neck, halter, halter strap, high neck, illusion, scoop, asymmetrical, v-neck … the list of necklines is long and complicated. The com-plicated world of necklines is another reason to try on a lot of different styles. Generally, halter, halter strap and high necklines look good on women with great Michele Obama shoulders. Sweetheart and v-necks can flatter a large chest (just make sure you can move with maximum coverage) and small bustlines that need added definition. Boat and scoop necklines can be perfect if you have a narrow face or high neckline. Thinking strapless? Try it on. A well-fitting strapless gown can flatter any body type.

LengthIn general, a late-afternoon or evening wedding requires a long gown, but it’s your wedding. Gowns do run long, so make sure you allow for plenty of time between the purchase and the wed-ding for alterations.

TimelineHaving your dress made? Give your seamstress more time than you think she needs. Add two weeks to her estimate of how long it will take. And check in regularly to keep your project on the front burner. I had to send my brother to my seamstress’s house miles and miles from where he lived so he could grab my dress from her hands.

Just remember, regardless of what you decide to wear, when you turn to face your guests at your wedding, you’ll always be beautiful to them — you are, after all, the only bride in the whole room. [1

Kenny proposed to Tessa while boating in the San Juans with their two dogs. After getting down on one knee, Kenny

directed the boat to sail to Roche Harbor where their friends and family awaited with a buffet, champagne and a sign saying, “She said yes.”

“He carried out the best engagement that I could have ever imagined, and I wouldn’t change anything,” Tessa said.

Before they knew it, they were at Roche Harbor once again. This time, they were getting married. The pair chose this location because it has always been one of Kenny’s favorite Pacific Northwest destinations, and he shared it with Tessa early in their relationship. Tessa said no other location even came close on her list to the Seaside Resort in Roche Harbor, and once they set their wedding budget, this venue was a “no brainer.”

In addition to their fond memories of Roche Harbor’s Seaside Resort, they also love the natural beauty of the surroundings. Tessa described it as “intimate and secluded with a spectacular, quaint marina. The morning of the wedding day began with rain, but by 2 p.m. there wasn’t a cloud in sight.”

Their wedding, on May 25 2013, was perfect. “It was perfect weather, and wonderful friends

and family surrounded us,” Tessa said. The colors were fresh — a theme of yellow, coral and light grey. The colors carried through the bridesmaids’ yellow chiffon strapless dresses from Moms, Maids and More in Bellevue. Kenny and his groomsmen wore Baroni Prive suits with match-ing golden yellow ties by The Tuxedo Club in Kirkland. Tessa wore a pure white, exaggerated A-line dress covered in soft ruffles. Their friend, Casey Rukeyser, officiated the ceremony.

The venue catered the buffet dinner, offering two entrees: Columbia River steelhead salmon and Alaskan weathervane scallops, or oven-roasted bacon-wrapped chicken breasts with wildflower honey. The couple focused on hav-ing locally-sourced beer and wine. They fea-tured a Washington beer flight and other beer selections from Redhook, Elysian and Widmer brewing companies.

After dinner, the couple danced for the first time as husband and wife to “Better than Love” by Griffin House, and finished the night dancing to contemporary alternative songs.

Kenny and Tessa live in West Seattle with their two Shiba Inu dogs and are currently saving for a house on the Eastside of Seattle. [

Three years later we got married on the same day as my grandparents’ anniversary.


Dan and Cory met while Cory was work-ing. Dan was at the bar, waiting to meet up with some friends when he struck

up a conversation with Cory. They discovered that Dan was planning on going out with some mutual friends of Cory’s. Though they went their separate ways that night, Dan asked Cory out a couple of weeks later. On their first date, they shared a bottle of wine and a cheese plate at Temple Bar and, their love story began.

The big moment came when they were on a camping trip with Cory’s parents, Dan’s brother, Nick and Nick’s girlfriend, Kelly. Dan suggested to Cory that they take a walk to catch the sunset. Along the way, the rest of the group made excuses for needing to go back to camp, leaving Cory and Dan alone on the beach to watch the sun set over Bellingham Bay. With a romantic speech, Dan proposed to Cory. When the couple returned to their campsite, their families popped a bottle of champagne they had been hiding.

“Three years later, we got married on the same day as my grandparents’ anniversary,” said Cory. The couple chose Lairmont Manor for the venue for its great history and also because it’s where Cory works. They walked down the aisle to “Look

and Where We Are” by Hot Chip — Dan sporting a tan suit and Cory in a gray suit, both with teal ties. Their close friend Chelsea Jameson officiated the ceremony wearing a floor-length gold sequin dress. Chelsea wasn’t the only loved one to partici-pate in the ceremony. Dan’s brother, Nick, read a poem, and Cory’s friend Lesley played guitar and sang “You Belong to Me” by Sue Thompson.

Following the ceremony, friends and family chatted at bistro tables, enjoying the small bites like fruit with aged cheese and crab salad. They served the champagne that they popped after their proposal and a bar of cedar planks made by Cory’s dad.

The tables themselves were covered in burlap with teal napkins and white flowers. Cory and Dan grew their own dahlias and bought gladiolas from A New Leaf Flower Shoppe.

Along with great food and drinks, guests could use the Oh Snap Photo Booth to take fun photo strips and put them in the guest book where they wrote notes to the newlyweds.

For the reception, DJ Idlhnds played music for dancing. Both Cory and Dan shared a dance with their mothers before dancing together. Cory and Dan live in Bellingham. [


The well-considered tableFull confession: I didn’t have a seating

chart at my wedding reception. I only had 35 guests, and I let the affinities of the

rehearsal cocktail party (in lieu of a dinner) linger. I let people choose with whom they wanted to sit. Was that a bad idea? I have no idea, it’s not as if anyone complains to the bride. There was a lot of mingling away from the table, a lot of movement around the room, so I didn’t worry. From where I sat, everyone had a wonderful time, and the photos of my sister’s husband with the napkin on his head indicated there was enough alcohol. But what if you have 200 people?

We aren’t going to name names, but there are wedding receptions in the past in which you, the infantophobe, were seated next to a couple with tiny triplets. Or the reception in which you, the Rachel Maddow addict were seated next to a Rush Limbaugh freak. So when you dream up your own wedding, the nightmares about the reception rank up there with nightmares about tripping and fall-ing, drunken slights from the in-laws, brawling, the terrible toasts, overflowing clogged toilets or

spoiled food. Luckily, there are ways to contain the chaos and set things straight, and it all begins with a good seating chart.

Deep breath. Step one is to take your guest list and group it. Who gets along with whom? What are the obvious conflicts? Does your cousin have a favorite aunt who lives far away? Do you have a sister who might prefer to sit with a group of younger people? Is there a divorced couple who should have separate corners? These are some good places to start. Even if you have general seating, you can control the seating chart a little by being creative — some creative ideas are seating people by eye color, astrological symbol or letters of last names. A general tip is that singles don’t necessar-ily want to be treated as a special group. There’s no need to treat your reception as speed-dating. Singles can be particularly tetchy around weddings, so you can always ask, “Hey, do you want to sit with Grandma Lizzy, the 6-month-old triplets or my hot college roommate?”

The first people on the chart are you and your future spouse. You’re the stars of the show, and

everyone wants to watch you eat and drink. Either elevate you and your husband on a dais, or place yourselves at the center and try to cluster the tables around you, so that no one is shoved into a corner far away. The idea of a “bad table” comes from restaurant headwaiters — everyone at a wed-ding is special to the bride and groom. But let’s face it, it’s hard to enjoy the cake-cutting from the cheap seats. So make sure everyone has a good view of you.

Unless you’re going for a multi-course plated meal, it’s perfectly acceptable to seat according to table and let the guests arrange themselves. You can use escort cards to assign the guests their table as they come in and arrange the place cards loosely as part of the centerpiece. Hand-lettered cards and pretty holders can be a lovely way to add a personal touch to the tables. If that feels too fiddly, you can create a big seating chart at the entryway. Just make sure it’s more letterpress elegant than sticky notes and magic marker. A lot of wedding hosts use chalkboards, which are perfect for a cozy homey wedding or a country wedding.

Arranging the tableHow you dress the table sets the tone and carries the theme of the whole wedding, so you’ll want to be thoughtful about the tablescapes.

FlowersLow arrangements can set a very intimate tone. We think it’s obvious you won’t want giant, tower-ing centerpieces that cut guests off from each other, but there it is in print in case you need it. A way to create height without blocking guests from each other is to use delicate blossom branches in clear vases or place small, bunched arrangements in stemware, above the guests’ eye-line.

Cards Freeing yourself from a strict seating chart also frees you from the stricture of having place cards at each setting, giving your creativity a real boost. Hand-lettered cards in your wedding’s color scheme can make for a lovely addition to the tablescape. Delicate silver stands, wine corks, small bouquets and small picture frames can be great ways to display your grouping of cards. Other

imaginative ideas are a twine clothesline with little clothes pins holding each card, antique luggage tags on a piece of antique ironwork, seashells with the cards leaning against them in a small, table-top sandbox and small cards tied to the lowest branches of a nearby blooming tree.

LightingElectric candles are less smoky, require less maintenance and are safer than the wax alterna-tive. There are lovely options that create the same ambiance without the need for flame retardant and fire extinguishers. Unlike regular candles, they can be safely nestled deep within bouquets and low centerpieces for a little extra glow at the table. Suspended paper lanterns at each table give off a flattering, soft glow without creating harsh shadows. Their unsightly cables can be another area for decoration, with vines or ribbons to create verticality in your decoration theme.

FavorsA little collection of nicely packaged favors can draw your table together, in addition to giving

your guests a nice souvenir of your special day. Homemade preserves in little jars, personalized key chains, shot glasses, handmade soap, votive candles and any number of other trinkets can make excellent favors. Favors can be placed at each setting or grouped in the center of the table as part of your centerpiece. If you have time to individu-alize them, they can add a nice personal touch.

Like something out of a movie, Brandis walked right into Grant’s life, turning up on his doorstep. She had just moved from

Minneapolis to Seattle when a friend of hers encouraged her to visit Bellingham. She visited her friend, who was renting a room in a house Grant owned. “I knocked on the door, Grant answered and the rest, as they say, is history!”

During their courtship, they decided to take a trip to Belize where they sought SCUBA certification. On their last dive, they were at a 15-foot safety stop when Grant motioned for the diving instructor’s sketch pad. Brandis thought Grant was going to ask about the shark they had just swum with and Grant had held. “I didn’t know why he couldn’t wait 3 minutes until we got to the top to ask.” While Brandis was panicking about the shark that was circling nearby, Grant was busy writing. Just before Brandis took off for the surface, she saw that Grant had written “Will you marry me?” on the sketchpad. “I was so excited, that I started to nod my head yes, resulting in water gushing into my regulator and goggles.” After situating her equipment, Brandis replied “Yes” on the sketchpad.

“Our wedding was a Bay-to-Baker wed-ding,” Brandis said. Grant is a professional ski photographer on Mount Baker, so Baker is a second home to him in the winter. It had also become a special place for both of them, and they wanted to share it with their friends and family. The wedding was held on Mount Baker. The weather didn’t coop-erate for them to hold it outside, so they held it in the upper lodge. “We felt it was the perfect place to share with our friends and family and begin our life together as husband and wife.” Brandis’ friend Doug Little, whom she had met climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, officiated. They celebrated with 50 family and friends. Water is also important to them, which is what drew them to Belize, so they held the reception and party at the Bellingham Ferry Cruise Terminal in Historic Fairhaven.

Brandis wore a chiffon sheath with a beau-tiful open back design and ruffled shoulder straps. The guests dined on lasagna, salad and appetizers from Milano’s in Glacier. They danced to “The Shape of Us.” They cur-rently make their home in Bellingham. [
