Isaac communities and road users will reap the benefits of $2.75 million in federal funding from Round Two of the Australian Government’s Bridges Renewal Programme (BRP), announced Monday January 18. Moranbah’s Cherwell Creek Bridge Renewal project secured the maximum funding allocation of 50 per cent of the total project cost and received the highest funding allocation in Queensland during Round Two.

The upgrade will deliver a wider, safer, more resilient bridgewith significantly increased flood immunity and load capacity. The $5.5 million project will greatly improve road freight efficiency including an increased speed limit back to 100km/h, and deliver long term benefits for local road users including safer driving conditions. The Australian Government has identified local bridge upgrades and repairs as a national priority and have committed $300 million in funding over five years from 2014–15.

In light of the recent weather events across the Isaac region it’s important to remember, if it’s flooded, forget it!

This is a timely reminder that we are still in storm season across the region so please be prepared. Visit www.getready.qld.gov.au for more information, and for the latest travel and traffic information visit www.131940.qld.gov.au

It will also create further operational efficiencies and extend the lifespan of the facility.Construction phase of the project is set to create local jobs with Council hoping to contract locals if they have business capability. Isaac Regional Council is urging residents to remember the three P’s this year to help ease the strain on the region’s sewerage system.Wet wipes and other ‘flushable’ toiletry products wreak havoc on sewerage systems with blockages a common, and increasing problem. Council is asking homeowners to stick to sending the three P’s – pee, poo and paper – down the toilet, and dispose of all other products in the bin.

Wet wipes are very stretchy and do not disintegrate the way toilet paper does. This leads to blockages in both the pipe network and in the equipment at the region’s sewer treatment plants. The issue is a state-wide concern with approximately 120 tonnes of wet wipes pulled from the sewerage network annually, which if stretched end to end would span the distance between Australia and New Zealand.Council asks residents to keep the three P’s in mind during 2016 and help play a part in cleaning up sewerage networks throughout Isaac and the state.

Racing Minister Grace Grace was trackside for the special Australia Day Races at Treasure Park, Moranbah on Saturday (January 30).Despite the unfortunate weather (thunder storms saw the last two races scrapped at the five race card) it was a great day of country racing and competitive fun with fashions of the field.Race days are much-loved social occasions across our region, and add to the spirit of our regional communities and Council would like to thank Minister Grace for sharing the day with the Moranbah racing community.

There is no better day than Australia Day to welcome people from all over the world to Isaac and it is always an honour to see people to make the pledge to become citizens of ourgreat nation. Congratulations to all of our region’s newest Australian citizens.

Isaac Regional Council would like to thank all residents who took the time to submit recent Community Budget Bids to help inform Council’s 2016-17 Budget. Council received 30 Community Budget Bid applications to help improve community programs, resources and infrastructure across the region. Each Budget Bid will be reviewed as part of the budgeting process and applicants will receive feedback on their application in July (applications closed February 1, 2016). We are proud to be a region that promotes community input during the budgeting process, this valuable feedback helps Council continue to make the Isaac region a better place to live, work and play.In addition to Community Budget Bids, Council offers a Community Grants program to assist not-for-profit groups and individuals by providing grants and donations. Community groups or organisations seeking funding assistance are encouraged to visit Council’s website for application forms and more information on the Community Grants programwww.isaac.qld.gov.au.

Flooded: Near Bee Creek on the Peak Downs Highway.

Flood water and debris:The Isaac River rises above the Peak Downs Highway.

Broken away: Just east of Coppabella on the Peak Downs Highway.

Nearly all of the state controlled main roads were cut off in Isaac during the wet weather event in early February.Council will be strongly advocating to the state to improve the flood immunity and condition of main roads in our region. More than half of the Peak Downs Highway was rated as ‘third-world’ in 2013 by RACQ. Work is now focussed on damage assessments and road repairs. It will take some time for our Council to complete works on the significant damage across the road network. Council is lodging an application for Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
