Is water and carbon dioxide organic or inorganic? All organic compounds contain carbon and hydrogen together and thus, carbohydrates are organic compounds. Compounds that do not contain carbon and hydrogen together are called inorganic. Water contains hydrogen and oxygen, Is water organic or inorganic? Why or why not? Best Answer: Organic compounds are actually compounds containing carbon covalently bonded with a hydrogen. You can say carbon is the main thing here. Compounds of carbon [except oxides, carbonates, bicarbonates] are termed as organic.
Water does not contain a carbon atom. So it is inorganic.
Carbon dioxide is considered by chemists as inorganic, along with carbon monoxide, carbonates and bicarbonates. Nature has not distinguished compunds into inorganic and organic compounds that clearly. These compounds of carbon are just assumed to be inorganic. Also there is that one thing about carbon being covalently bonded with hydrogen in organic compounds. Due to that criteria carbon dioxide is considered inorganic. But actually there is no clear reason.Avi · 8 years ago1Thumbs up 0Thumbs downCommentAsker's rating Report Abuse
water's molecular formula is H20. There are no carbons in there so it is inorganic. Carbon dioxide contains carbon and seems like it would be organic but it is not.Rivkah K · 8 years ago0Thumbs up

water and CO2 are considered inorganic. Also all carbonates and bicarbonates (examples are Na2CO3 and NaHCO3) are considered inorganic. Carbon monoxide also.ChemTeam · 8 years ago0Thumbs up 1Thumbs downCommentReport Abuse
You said it yourself..."All organic compounds contain carbon and hydrogen together and thus, carbohydrates are organic compounds."...water is H2O...no carbon...inorganic. carbon dioxide is CO2...no hydrogen...inorganic..

carbon is organic, because it contains carbon, and water is not organic because it does not contain carbon. -Organic Chemistry-The study of chemicals that contain
carbon -Inorganic Chemistry-The study of chemicals that do NOT contain carbon.
