THE GREAT THANKSGIVING
Have you ever noticed that in the communion ritual, after the invitation and
confession, the largest portion of the liturgy is called “The Great Thanksgiving”?
It reminds us of how, on the night in which he gave himself up for us Jesus took
bread and wine, GAVE THANKS, and then gave it to the disciples saying, “do
this in remembrance of me.”
You know what struck me today? That in the deepest, darkest moments of Jesus’
life, he gave thanks! He knew:
Judas was about to betray him
The disciples would all flee
He would be arrested and tortured
In 24 hours he would be dead
Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m not really sure that at that point I’d have
given thanks! But Jesus did. How in the world did he do that??
He did it, of course, because he knew the rest of the story. He knew that even
though it might not look like it at the time, God was in control and would always
be victorious. Jesus was so confident about the big picture that he was able to give
thanks for the little things…bread, wine, his disciples, even the sacrifice he was
about to make.
I don’t know what’s going on in your life this Thanksgiving season…I hope
things are wonderful and you can hardly count all your blessings. But if you find
yourself in difficult times, take a page out of Jesus’ life. Give thanks anyway…
because you, too, know the rest of the story.
Grace and Peace,
Lynne

Dear Families, In November our Sunday school focus will be Honor.
When Jesus came here, He showed us how to love and honor those around us. He taught us to love our enemies, care for the “least of these,” and become the servants of all who puts others’ needs before our own.
In Sunday school we’ll be focusing on learning more about honor - letting someone you know see how valuable they are. Our Memory Verse for November is Romans 12:10 “Love one another deeply. Honor others more than yourself.”
I’m excited to watch our children explore the meaning of Honor through the life of David. Week 1- Samuel 1 16:1-13 Honor others by giving them a chance. Week 2- 1 Samuel 18, 19, 20 Honor others by putting them first. Week 3- 2 Samuel 9:13 Honor others by keeping your promises. Week 4- 2 Samuel 16:12 Honor God by giving him credit.
One way to help your children relate Biblical lesson of honor to today, is to honor a Veteran. Help your child write a letter or draw a picture for a Veteran to show them how important they are to us.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help your children grow in Christ’s
love. Giving Him all the glory,
Lindsay Pulido Children’s Ministry Director

What’s New in First Youth
Having a great youth ministry assistant like Vannysa has allowed me to do some extra
things for our youth. Vannysa and I meet regularly to plan upcoming events and talk
about new ideas for the group. Here are two things that we have implemented already:
Wednesday Night High School Prayer Checkin
Monthly Separate Events for Sr. High & 7th/8th Graders
I’ll be attending the NYWC conference in November so look for even more exciting
changes in our group in 2017. In His Service, Kim [email protected]
Our youth group
recently went to
Woodlake Nursing
Home to worship
and fellowship
with some of the
home's residents.
Although we didn't
play Bingo (the
youth know how
upset I was about
this), it was an
amazing experi-
ence. So often,
youth are criticized
for being selfish or
unaware of the
world around
them. I didn't see
that this day. The
youth took initia-
tive and served
with open hearts,
and without need-
ing to be pushed.
They genuinely
cared about the
residents, and had
good conversation
with them. It was a
great day!

Thanks for Giving
Thanksgiving is a time for expressing our thankfulness, gratitude and appreciation to God, family and friends for our blessings. It is also the season when the church looks to our faithful supporters for
end-of-year gifts to continue our work. Contributing to the church is a very concrete way to give thanks for our church home and the many ways to work together to help people.
Need help in finding the most effective ways to give? Heartspring Methodist Foundation can help: 713-533-3780, 800-521-9617 or [email protected]. Thanks for giving!

A note from Kimberly…... Thank you First Church for allowing me to serve God and our church! I appreciate all the kind words, cards, and hugs. I love my apron!! Every time I wear it I will remember the memories. I will miss the many faces and activi-ties but I will try to come and hang out every once in a while. May God continue to bless our children's ministries and your families! Praising God Always, Kimberly Bowers

In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!
