“when you thought i wasn’t...
TRANSCRIPT
As we come up to
Mother’s Day this year,
I’d like to share a
wonderful poem with
you by Mary Rita
Schilke Korzan. It’s
called “When You
Thought I Wasn’t
Looking”, and speaks
of the powerful
example of a mother.
When you thought I wasn’t
looking, I saw you feed a stray
cat, and I thought it was good to
be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn’t
looking, I saw you make my
favorite cake just for me, and I
knew that little things are special
things.
When you thought I wasn’t
looking, I heard you say a prayer,
and I believed there is a God I
could always talk to.
When you thought I wasn’t
looking, I felt you kiss me good-
night, and I felt loved.
When you thought I wasn’t
looking, I saw tears come from
your eyes, and I learned that
sometimes things hurt, but it’s
all right to cry.
When you thought I wasn’t
looking, I saw that you cared, and
I wanted to be everything that I
could be.
When you thought I wasn’t
looking, I looked…and wanted to
say thanks for all the things I saw
when you thought I wasn’t
looking.
Have a great Mother’s
Day! See you in
worship!
Grace and Peace,
Dr. Lynne Settlemyre Pastor

SCHEDULE
Taking the Word on the Road
In April, our youth had three chances to hear and speak the Word of God outside
of our church and youth center. We had a Sunday morning high school lesson
given by Cody Orr at Donut Haven. The youth got to hear me speak about God’s
power and size and omnipotence (way to go, Caleb Edinger, for knowing this
word) at the Stephen F Austin statue. Then Bryson spoke to our youth at
MacLean Park on Sunday night, April 29th.
At MacLean Park, a gentlemen actually came up to me and asked me what our
group was all about. That was my chance to tell him about our youth and our
church and our mission and our Christ.
How blessed is our church to have college students like Cody Orr and high
school students like Bryson Wintjen and others that aren’t afraid to take the Word
into the world both through their speech and their actions.

Mother's Day, celebrated this
year on Sunday, May 13, is a
time to recognize all mothers
and the important role they play
in our lives. The founding of the
American tradition of Mother's
Day in 1908 is credited to Anna
Jarvis, a woman wanting to
honor her mother through a
memorial service. This year,
consider honoring your mother

her bill on time. In fact, the manager
had given our name to the lady as a
possible source of help and had also
waived late fees. We were able to
pledge to help with part of the rent and
so was another Christian agency. Even
so, the lady had to borrow money from
a friend, to be paid back when she got a
new job. We pray that she is able to
find one soon!
Another client’s husband walked out on
her and took the rent money with him.
She works part time as a cashier at a
convenience store and was asking for
more hours. The apartment manager
extended the due date for her rent. The
client was able to pay her rent with her
paycheck and our assistance.
The Salvation Army also contacted us
last week asking for help with anti-
biotics for a young man who could not
work due to an infection. We paid $93
toward the medication and the
Salvation Army was able to pay the rest
so that he could return to work.
The Society of St. Stephen is a group of people
from the First United Methodist Church,
Chapelwood United Methodist Church, and
Christ Lutheran Church who are committed to
providing emergency or temporary assistance to
local people in need.
The Society of St.
Stephen continues to do
our best to serve those
who need help in our
community. We have not
received as many calls
this month, however, the calls we did
receive were heartbreaking. Many
needed help with rent, which is
exceptionally high in our community,
and any “uh-oh” places our clients in
dire straits financially.
One lady called because she had been
laid off of her job in one of our area
plants. Her rent of $950 was due and
she had no income. Her apartment
manager confirmed that she was an
excellent tenant and had always paid

Here are a few Fun Facts about our
church library:
Over 300 books were removed
from the shelves during the
renovation process.
There are 8 different types of
Bibles in our library.
Displayed on a wall in our library:
The library will be open on Sundays
during and after church. To check out
a book, locate card in book, fill out
name and date and place card in
basket at check out area in library.
Books will be due back one month
from the date checked out.
Our Grand Re-Opening on April
8th was a huge success!
Children came and adults lined
the hallway for the cutting of the
ribbon, which was done by Mr.
Munson.
I saw people actually using the
library. If you need a certain book
and can’t find it, let me know. I’ll
point you in the right direction.
Thanks!
