Psalm 96:2-3

“Come, ye thankful people come, Raise the song of harvest home.

All is safely gathered in e’er the winter storms begin. God our maker does provide for our wants to be supplied.

Come to God’s own temple, come, Raise the song of harvest home.”

This beautiful Thanksgiving hymn brings me back to harvests I have experienced in rural Iowa. I am so thankful that I grew up in a rural culture so I know the season of planting and the season of harvest. And in between the seed planting and the harvest, I walked the corn fields to de-tassel the corn. I don’t remember why but it was important to the farmers.

Tonight at choir practice at the end of rehearsal we started talking about the Thanksgiving dinner traditions we have known. We shared recipes which were always prepared but rarely eaten or at least not by everybody. Or there was a dish (usually a vegetable) that was either on everyone’s most hated list or most favorite list!

Two years ago I ate Thanksgiving dinner in Ethiopia. There wasn’t turkey but there was certainly an abundance of food! I was reminded that the first Thanksgiving was a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic experience.

May we all be truly thankful for ALL that the Lord has done and continues to do in our lives!

Well here we are in the final month of our Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Mission for 2016. Remember it is not too late to pack a shoe box. Sunday November 6th is the First Sunday to start returning all the shoe boxes that you have packed with the 13th being the last Sunday before Collection week starts. We encourage you to try and return as many of the shoe boxes as possible on the 6th as we need to exchange the free shipping vouchers you received with pre packed boxes for prepaid labels. We need to attach them to those boxes along with preparing all of them for the Prayer and Dedication during our service on the 13th.

Collection week begins November 14th and runs through the 21st this year. Once again we are going to be a Relay Collection Center for south Scottsdale and surrounding area and Mary and I are the new Coordinators this year. If you have not been contacted or already volunteered we can sure use help so please contact us to do so. Attached is a copy of the days and hours of operation that need to be manned. We want to extend an early Thank You to all who have helped and everyone who has packed a shoe box this year.

Jaki Steward told us that before she received her shoe box when she was five years old and in an orphanage that she felt like she had no worth. Then she realized that she must be worth something because someone cared enough to pack a shoe box for her. Because of that shoe box and the Greatest Journey program she came to know God and his son Jesus Christ and her whole life changed. She was adopted the next year by an American family and is now 22 years old and spreading Gods word. Isn’t it amazing to know that just because you cared to pack a shoe box what a change can occur for the child that receives it. Please join us in prayer that this year’s collection will be more than ever before so that there are millions of new stories like Jaki’s to be told.

Thanks Again and God BlessRichard and Mary Garner

The Dry River Yacht ClubSunday November 20th at 3 pm to 4:30 pm at Scottsdale Presbyterian Church

In the fall of 2007, a group of friends created Dry River Yacht Club. They mixed together an assortment of musical references and high-energy execution to create a sound that’s eclectic and entirely our own.Songwriting in DRYC is a collaborative effort – every member contributes his or her personal style, and together they build and refine each song until it’s ready to share with the world. They’ve self-released two EPs and a two full-length albums, including their most recent album “El Tigre,” produced by Craig Schumacher (KT Tunstall, Neko Case, Calexico, DeVotchka) of Wavelab Studios in Tucson, AZ. They’ve also been touring the west coast, midwest, and southwest since 2008, including an official showcase at SXSW 2014.Along the way DRYC has been fortunate enough to share the stage with such notable acts as Wiz Khalifa, Capital Cities, The Flaming Lips, Devotchka, Calexico, Balkan Beat Box, Lindsey Sterling, Of Montreal, Devendra Banheart, Edward Sharpe and MZ, The Shins, Paper Bird, March Fourth Marching Band, Grupo Fantasma, Del the Funky Homosapien, He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister and too many other great bands to list.Band Members:• Garnet Lashley – Vocals• Corey Gloden – Guitar• Henri Benard – Drums• Andrew Bates – Bass• Ben Allred – Violin• Kristilyn Woods – Bassoon• Zachary Lewis – Trombone
