Why IRIS ?

Operators have requested improvements to the qualityof the supply chain for rolling stock. IRIS is an

answer to

these

requests

Railway Equipment Manufacturers have requested rationalizationof the quantity of different requirements and audits from Rolling Stock manufacturers.

Quality deficiencies and delays have their root cause across the whole Supply Chain.

Cost or time pressure could lead to quality deficits.

ISO 9001 requirements are too general; there is no link to railway specific requirements in particular.

The capturing and maintenance of reliable equipment manufacturers information causes a huge effort.

Why IRIS ?

The goal of IRIS is to improve the quality of the railwayindustry supply chain.

IRIS aims at global recognition and acceptance of audit results by all Railways stakeholders, which leads to theavoidance of multiple auditing, and therefore increases cost efficiency.

Audit records and audit results are collected and stored in acentral database.

IRIS enables high quality in audits.

Requirements to auditors (experiences/examination)

Auditors shall comply with ISO 19011

Auditing Experience: Auditors shall have participated in at least 4 certification audits or for a minimum of 20 audit days covering all the requirements of ISO 9001 within the last 4 years.

Work Experience: A minimum of 4 years railway industry experience in the last 10 years.

Railway Certification / Auditors shall have passed the IRIS training and examination.

Communications skills: Basic English & local language.

Audit results are scored, its not a fail/pass system

Questionnaire has 249 questions :

Release of IRIS Revision 01 in Nov 07 :

IRIS next steps 2008


Challenges / Risks – UIC initiative

UIC decided to stop the development of its own quality assurance certification scheme in Europe,

To intensify the discussion about IRIS, a document was elaborated taking into account the gaps existing in IRIS to havethe standard applicable to the operators.

According latest news, UIC has postponed its involvement.

IRIS SteCo is continuing to convince individually the operators to join.


Challenges / Risks – ERA

Due to the fact that IRIS is not an international recognized standard, e.g ISO, ERA will not be able officially to refer to it, e.g. in TSIs.

Preparation of IRIS rev02 for launching during UNIFE General Assembly 2009 by involvement of industry and operators

IRIS Management Centre will continue to support clientsand to monitor certification bodies performance.

And the IRIS Group will continue to encourage railway companies to recognize IRIS Certification.
