• Software piracy worldwide

– Increased with the Internet– Difficult to trace (no need of a physical

support to transfer a software product)



• A functional definition of DRM:– The identification and description of

intellectual property, rights pertaining to works and to parties involved in their creation or administration (digital rights management);

– The (technical) enforcement of usage restriction (digital management of rights).



• Requirements– Identification (unique identifier of the work)– Clear description (Metadata)– Usage rules



• Right management vs. Content management– Content management: includes creating,

manipulating, fixing, storing, transferring, performing, rendering and disposing of the content.

– Rights management: all activity conducted in relation to the rights governing the content management activity.



• DRM tools– Identify the work, the right holder– Describe the content– Allow use according to the rules



• Examples– Encryption – Persistent association (watermarks, digital

signature)– Metadata– Payment technologies



• Examples (Software)– Game consoles (Nintendo, Sony Playstation,

…)– Microsoft software (Genuine certificate

verification)– Trial use of a software for a limited period of

time– Online registration to activate the software



• Forbidden by the law:– Act of circumvention– Tools for circumvention

of Access Control and Copyright Control TMs



• Issues:– Low level of standardisation– Often no management of exceptions to the

author’s rights (copies for private use, cryptographic research, reverse engineering, etc.)



• Conclusion– DRM solutions are more and more used for

software products– No standard solutions yet, resulting in poor or

no interoperability
