The Introduction to Pressure-sensitive Adhesive Workshop is designed to introduce participants to the basics of PSA products, including their design, manufacture and end-use. The target audience are professionals involved with marketing, research, technical support, quality control and production, they may be new to the PSA industry, or those professionals needing a primer on the technical aspects of PSA products.

To support understanding of the market and the technical background for self-adhesives, a broad range of topics from market trends to “why pressure-sensitives work” will be covered. This introductory workshop explains many topics to a basic level of understanding, making it ideal for participants new to the pressure-sensitive adhesive world.

The program includes the topics to be covered along with a description of the content of each one. Furthermore, a “glossary of terms” will be reviewed during the course to help participants understand the language of this industry.

This workshop provides the essential knowledge and information in design, manufacture, testing and end-use performance of the pressure-sensitives used in the tape and label industry.

WHAT MAKES SELF ADHESIVES WORK?Covers the chemical and mechanical properties of self- adhesives (also known as pressure-sensitive adhesives) and why these are important in gaining and maintaining their unique properties that allow adhesion to surfaces. The basics of adhesion, polymer properties and how they allow pressure-sensitive adhesive materials to work is discussed.

TYPES OF SELF-ADHESIVE PRODUCTSThis section goes over the various types of pressure-sensitive adhesive products, components used to make them, their end-uses and markets they serve.

TYPES OF ADHESIVESCovers the different adhesive classifications (permanent, removable, etc.), their polymer base (rubber, acrylic, etc.), applications where they are used and how they are provided to the manufacturer (solvent based, 100% solids, etc.)

SOLVENT ADHESIVE COMPOUNDING This section reviews the basic formulation and compounding of solvent based adhesives including natural rubber, synthetic rubber, acrylics and silicones.

HOT MELT ADHESIVE COMPOUNDING Basics on hot melt adhesives, components used, formulation and compounding. Focus is primarily on styrenic block copolymer (SBC) formulations.

WATER BASED ADHESIVE COMPOUNDING Basic formulation and compounding of water based systems, including synthetic rubber, acrylics and natural rubber.

FACESTOCKS AND CARRIER WEBSTOCKS Reviews the materials used for facestocks (printed surface) in pressure-sensitive adhesive labels and the materials used as carriers (middle layer used for support or strengthening) in double coated tape products.

RELEASE SYSTEMS AND RELEASE LINERS This section covers release coatings and liners used in pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes and labels to protect the adhesive and transport the product through processing and storage. Focus is on silicone release coatings, covering basics of why they work, chemistry, formulation and end-uses.

ANALYTICAL TESTING METHODS This section reviews analytical methods used to characterize the chemical make-up and physical properties of pressure-sensitive adhesive materials. Case studies are presented to show how these methods can be used to diagnose the cause of problems encountered in manufacture, converting and end-use.

COFFEE & NETWORKING BREAK

PHYSICAL TESTING OF SELF-ADHESIVE MATERIALS Covers methods, equipment and standards for evaluating properties such as peel adhesion, tack, cohesive strength and release from liner for pressure-sensitive adhesive tape and label products. Also presented are sample preparation methods and equipment, release coating test methods, standard organizations (ISO, ASTM, etc.). There will also be a demonstration of selected test equipment.

LUNCH

GENERAL COATING METHODS Reviews the various methods of applying pressure-sensitive adhesives onto moving webs of liners and carriers. Included are equipment descriptions, basics of operation, where each is used, strengths and weaknesses. Methods covered include gravure, smooth roll, wire wound rod, slot die, etc.

DRYING (CONVECTION, IR AND RF) This section covers the basics of drying solvent and emulsion coatings in web processes. The presentation covers basics of drying, types of drying equipment, strengths and weaknesses and applications for each method. In addition to convection (heated air) drying, RF and IR methods are discussed.

CONVERTING OF PSA PRODUCTSAfter large master rolls of PSA product are produced, they generally go through slitting or sheeting, and downstream printing or application process. We’ll cover some of the more common converting and application methods and the important factors to consider for PSA’s. PSA PRODUCT SELECTION Many of the people attending this workshop are involved with selecting the right PSA for an application. In this section, we’ll cover important variables to consider and questions to ask to help in PSA product selection

ABOUT AWADAVE MCCANN, TECHNICAL/ QUALITY DIRECTORDave is Technical/Quality Director at Chemsultants in Mentor, Ohio, USA and has been at Chemsultants since 2008. In this position he manages technical business development and quality/regulatory affairs for Chemsultants’ laboratory, including consulting, contract research and development, problem solving, physical testing and analytical testing. The range of projects includes adhesives, sealants and coatings, with much of the work involving pressure-sensitive adhesive products.

He has over 30 years of industry experience in a variety of functional disciplines including process engineering, quality assurance, adhesive coating processes, technical service, new application development, product development and product commercialization. The majority of his career has been in the pressure-sensitive adhesive industry, including pressure sensitive adhesive labels and tapes and durable outdoor/digitally printed graphics.

Dave holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Dayton.

MIKE HILSTON, RESEARCH CHEMIST Mike is a Research Chemist at Chemsultants in Mentor, Ohio, USA and has been at Chemsultants since 2010. In this position he is responsible for a variety of contract adhesive and coated product development projects. Mike is also involved with problem solving, physical testing, test method development, and analytical testing projects.

He has over 25 years of PSA industry experience working with baby diaper tapes, labels, industrial tapes, packaging tapes, finger ban-dages and many coating and processing technologies. Mike has also worked in other areas where polymer technology is important such as battery separators, ion exchange membranes, hydrogel films and elastic film extrusion.

Mike holds a B.S. in Chemistry degree from Cleveland State Uni-versity.
