Overview:

NEBOSH has collaborated on the development ofthis specialist qualification with the British Health andSafety Executive (HSE). HSE inspectors have notedthat incident investigations were generally very poor.The collaboration, therefore, combines the advancedtechnical expertise of the HSE with NEBOSH’sability to deliver strong vocational qualifications.

The qualification is aimed at managers, supervisors,SHE Champions, union representatives and aspiringhealth and safety practitioners. On completionof the qualification, candidates will be able to:

• carry out a solo accident investigation for non-complex accidents and incidents including thegathering and analysis of evidence

• produce an action plan; and• contribute to team incident investigations for

large-scale incidents

The Programme:

On this programme you will cover elements leading to the following two Learning Outcomes:

Understand why incident investigations are carried out and how human and organisational factors contribute to incidents.

Understand how to investigate incidents and confidently carry out an investigation.

Content Areas:

Moral, legal and financial arguments for investigations. Human and organisational factors.Investigating accidents and incidents.Positive strategies and the barriers to successful interviews.Advanced incident investigation techniques.

This qualification will be delivered over the equivalent of one day (depending on the mode of study). Students will be required to undertake three hours of pre-course reading before the course commences. Some suggestions for this pre-course reading include:

• reading and understanding the requirements of theirorganisation’s incident investigation policy;• reviewing a sample of their organisation’s previous incidentinvestigation reports to find what lessons have been learned; and• reviewing some of the incident investigation case studies from theHSE’s website that may be relevant to their organisation

Training notes:

All attendees will get a comprehensive reference manual covering, in depth, all of the subjects included in the training programme.

Assessment:

We won’t leave you stranded when it comes to the final test. Throughout the programme our trainers will help you to prepare for the examination by developing your question reading and answering technique.
