2015-2016 School Year

Welcome Parents and Students!

I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Sheri Shoemake and I will be your student’s broadcasting teacher this year. I’m excited to get to know your student and educate them to the best of my ability. We will be exploring many facets of broadcasting such as pantomime, improvisation, characterization, duet acting, broadcasting history, and design. Many people are not aware that broadcasting is a discipline that teaches punctuality, respect, patience, responsibility, preparedness, and many other virtues through creativity and imagination that may not be explored in other classroom settings.

Goals and ExpectationsAs a fine arts teacher, my goal is to enlighten my students about the art form of theatre and broadcasting, but also for them to gain a respect for other art forms and their peers. Audience etiquette will be learned and reinforced in the classroom daily. Although broadcasting is a very fun subject, there will be times when order is required and if a student is unable to comply with class rules he or she will be reprimanded accordingly.

Broadcasting requires a lot of self-discipline, and since my classes can be very large I will not be able to keep my eye on every student at all times. It is important for the entire class that students do their best to stay on task and follow classroom procedures.

Broadcasting is all about group collaboration, so the students will be working in groups or pairs most of the year. I will do my best to group the students so they will be most productive, as most of the major grades in my class will be collected from group projects or performances. Your student should have little to no homework besides memorizing lines, finishing projects done in class, or gathering props to use in class.

I’m excited this school year has arrived! With your support we will have a successful and enjoyable time in broadcasting. I am available for conference daily during 5th period and Mr. Brown is available during 3rd period, but ask for a 24-hour notice to gather the appropriate materials and paperwork. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or send me an email.

Sincerely,

Sheri Shoemake BroadcastingDirector [email protected]

Welcome to Broadcasting!Broadcasting is an entertaining and creative business. In order to be successful, we have to be able to work well with others and take leadership roles when necessary. We all want to have an incredible school year, so let’s look at the rules and procedures that will allow us to do so.

Class Rules

1. Follow directions the first time they are given.2. Stay on task!3. Respect fellow actors and your teacher by showing appropriate audience behavior.4. Restore order to the acting area.5. Bring all necessary materials to class, including yourself, on time!6. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.7. No food, drinks, gum, or candy.

** Students will also follow all school expectations, along with district policies, expectations, and laws. This includes cell phone policy. **

Consequences for disruptions/inappropriate behavior:

1st offense – Verbal Reminder/Sign Discipline Log 2nd offense – Teacher/Student conference after class 3rd offense – Detention (30 minutes)/Coach or Sponsor Contact 4th offense – After School Detention/Parent Contact/ Written Action Plan 5th offense – Office Referral

*** Severe misconduct will result in an immediate office referral. Additional consequences may include permanent change in seating, removal from a production and/or denial of privileges and rewards. ***

Class Work

Individual work - requires headings on all papers – need to have student’s first and last name and class period. During individual work (excluding warm-ups) talking is at level 1 or 2, unless specified. If a group project, the paper/project needs to have ALL group member names on it!

Group work – students may work in a group of their own choosing, unless they prove to be non-productive, and then will be split up or given an alternative assignment.

While working in a group, students will stay in their assigned group area, only talking (level 2-3) about the topic or working on the assignment. When the teacher gives the instruction, they will clean up after their own group. The group will all write a self- report and the “grade” they would give themselves and the others in the group. Teacher will evaluate group’s work and give individual grades if need be.

Students will raise their hand to speak in class. Students will also raise hand to get help or to ask a question.

Educational videos – students will behave with the same expectations as if the teacher was speaking.

Taking tests/quizzes – Talking level ZERO. Not timed but student must finish before end of school day. If open notes, student must use own notes on quizzes/tests.

Work for other classes is not to be worked on in class.

Student Performances/Presentations (Audience Etiquette)

1. Be in your seat if you are not onstage performing.2. Be silent once teacher calls attention for performance to start.3. Be Respectful. No verbal comments, noises, or walking around the room.4. Applaud when the performance is over, no matter if you liked it or not.5. Critiquing others is okay, as long as your critique is not mean-spirited. Constructive

criticism helps us grow as artists and as people!

Classroom ProceduresEntering/Exiting

Class begins when you enter the room. Headphones/ear buds will be put away and all electronic devices will be turned off.

When entering the classroom, students will get composition book from the bookshelf and be in assigned seat when the bell rings. Students will then begin the warm-up on the projector.

If tardy, the student will enter without causing a disruption to the class. Student must have a pass and hand it to the teacher.

When exiting the classroom, students will be dismissed by table/group, provided that they have put supplies away and cleaned up their area. Students will not pack up their things or line up at the door, unless the teacher has given them permission to do so.

The bell does not dismiss the student, the teacher does.

Leaving the classroom

Using the rest room/water fountain – students will go one at a time to the restroom/water fountain. There are no restroom/water breaks in the first and last 10 minutes of class.

Students will not leave the classroom without valid pass or reason, and will not leave without asking teacher permission.

Returning to the room –students will not re-enter the room if a group is performing or presenting – need to wait for the end of the presentation.

Going as a class to the library or computer lab – Students will walk in a line without talking. Other classes are in session and we will be respectful of that.

Movement in the Classroom

We sometimes do activities in broadcasting that require movement from one area of the room to another or physical movement in general. To keep everyone safe, there is NO RUNNING. Physical contact between students should always be appropriate and safe.

During active instruction, you may not move around the room without permission. Throw all trash away at the end of class after you have been dismissed. Do not get up from

your seat to dispose of trash

Respect

Respect for Self – I will always do my best. I will positively participate in all classroom activities

Respect for Others – I will stay on task without disturbing or distracting others. I will not use ‘put downs’ or harass others. I will respect other people’s differences and opinions

Respect for School – I will raise my hand to speak. I will enter and exit the room quietly. I will complete all assignments on time. I will actively listen when the teacher is speaking.

Class Supplies

Students will need to provide their own supplies. The deadline to have supplies is August 31st. If you are having issues getting any of these supplies, please come speak to be privately.

EVERY DAY you need to bring the following supplies to class: 1 journal (designated for this class only- you may leave it in the classroom) 1 Mustang Planner 1divider for broadcasting in you Mustang Boinder Loose leaf notebook paper 1 pencil bag 1 package of pencils 1 red pen & 1black pen 1 box of map pencils 1 highlighter

Classroom supplies – all supplies and materials should be returned after use to their designated spot. I will usually give a 5 minute warning before the end of class to allow time for material clean up.

Absent/Late Work

If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to get the notes from the teacher or other classmates. Notes are the only thing students need to keep up with.

Late work is accepted, with a penalty of -10 points taken off each day late. If a student is refusing to perform, it is considered “late.” In other words, if you are not prepared to perform when the assignment is due, points will be taken off your grade!

It is YOUR responsibility to ask for your makeup work.

Signaling for your Attention

When we need your attention, we will say, “Marco” & raise our hand and you will say, “Polo”. Please be quiet immediately. In cases of zero talking, we will just hold up our hand.

Announcements/Assembly

Listening to P.A. announcements – students must be silent during the whole announcement, regardless if it applies to them or not.

Attending an assembly – students will behave as young adults and be attentive to the speaker. Being disruptive is not permitted. Remember your Audience Etiquette.

When going to a pep rally/assembly - we will stay together as a class and sit together, no exceptions!

Guests in the Classroom

If we have guest speakers – students are to treat guests with the same respect they do the teacher.

If there are visitors/observers in the classroom – students should be on their BEST behavior but not be inhibited to participate.
