GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Ltd. is having three
factories, which are at Nabha, Rajahmundry and Sonepat. The factory
at Nabha is the mother unit and products manufactured by this
company fall under three categories of consumer healthcare:
HORLICKS
Way back in 1883, James Horlicks, a London chemist experimented
with powdered malt mixed with milk and launched this product in
Chicago, USA, AS ‘Malted Milk’. In 1906, he returned to England
and set up a factory at Slough. Renamed as ‘Horlicks’ in 1931, it
became a part of the giant Beecham group in 1969.

Nutritional Health Drinks Horlicks and its
variants
JUNIOR HORLICKS
Children between the age of 1 and 3 need special nutrition for healthy
growth. New Junior Horlicks along with other vital nutrients is
enriched with a unique scientific combination of nutrients, which have
been scientifically researched and proven to give the child a solid
foundation to be mentally sharp and physically active.
New Junior Horlicks is easy to digest and has a taste that children
love. Junior Horlicks was first commercially manufactured in Nabha
in August’91.
ELACHI HORLICKS
Elaichi Horlicks was launched in October 1973. Horlicks position as
the market leader in the milk food drinks (mfd.) category was further
Strengthened with launch of chocolate Horlicks in November 1990.
Elaichi Horlicks is Horlicks with a fresh cardamom
taste and aroma along with natural goodness of wheat, milk and
malted barley making an appetizing and easily digestible drink.
MOTHER’S HORLICKS
Mother’s Horlicks (launched in November’96),is a special
nourisher scientifically designed to help meet the nutritional needs of
pregnant and lactating women, as part of a healthy diet. It is made
with the natural goodness of Horlicks by a unique spray dried process,
which helps make it easy to digest. It is enriched with natural honey ,
and a combination of vitamins and minerals that not only gives
excellent flavor but also help in keeping good health during
pregnancy and optimal birth weight of the baby It is also essential for
physical and mental development of the growing foetus. When taken
during the breast feeding period the nourishment of Mother’s Horlicks
helps to improve the quality and quantity of breast milk.
BOOST
Boost is a brown powder nourisher with a rich choco malt taste
that provides the child with body building proteins, carbohydrates and
fat. It is now formulated to include power-packed ‘Energy Boosters’,
essential for releasing energy from food and reduce tiredness and
fatigue. Boost was first launched in November’75 after which many
relaunches have taken place.
Very popular in the south, Boost has shown an average growth rate of
9% annum. Sportsmen like Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar back it,
making it the secret of OUR ENERGY!!
BY PRODUCT
The main by product of the company is Gopika Ghee. The
production process is essentially the same as the same machinery is
used to make different products. Gopika Ghee is packed in the factory
itself, rest of the product are bulk packed in big containers of specified
weights.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS
The manufacturing process for Horlicks is as follow:
1. The first step in the production process involves the mixing of
Wheat Flour with Malted Barley.
2. In the second step water is added to the above mixture and the
material is mashed thoroughly as a result of which the outer
cover of Malted Barley is removed and remains after it is called
Husk.
3. After mashing the material it becomes a thick slurry in which
the solis content is above 50%
4. The fourth step involves the adding up to the above mixture.
5. The next stage is the stage of Evaporation in which the material
is evaporated and the result is a thick slurry of the material in
which the solid content is around 80%
6. After Evaporation comes the step of spreading out the material
in plates and keeping them upon the oven for above half an
hour. Once the material is completely dried, the plated are taken
out from the oven and the food item is scrapped out, which
comes out in the form of thin layers. Then the vitamins and
other essential nutrients are added to the food items which id
then grinded and the result is our final product “HORLICKS”.
SUPPLY CHAIN PROCESS
The Supply Chain process at GSK, Nabha is as following:
Horlicks manufactured at the Nabha Plant, after it is put in drums
with a capacity of 184kg. is either bottled or packed in pouches and
then sent to the sale deposit suited across the country,. Its chain is as

Human Resources and Administration
Department
Following are the function of HRA department:
Training
Training is viewed not merely as an event but also as a process of
facilitating the continued up gradation of Knowledge, skills and
attitudes. Training activities include:
Structured introduction training for all new recruits.
Intra and Inter department team development exercises.
Training in the technical/ functional aspects.
Employee Relations
The HR department monitors the discipline of all workmen. Rules for
all workers are displayed in the restroom in the form of standing
orders.
Attendance Records and DevelopmentThis time office maintains attendance records of all workers with the
aid of duty passes. It is supported by a software package that can be
accessed to any point of time by the HR department to check the
status.
Employee Communication
The HR department is responsible for various communication
activities like Speak up, Open House sessions, float file, pamphlets
and posters.
Welfare Activities
The HR department is involved in various welfare activities for the
employees which are: Cultural programs, farewell parties’ etc.
Safety
The department is responsible for ensuring that the statutory
requirements of all equipment/ processes are strictly followed. Safety
audits are conducted once in two years to check the effectiveness of
the safety procedures, equipment’s and systems.
Security
Security staff takes rounds in add around the factory, they are
involved in routine activities like carrying out searches at the gate and
maintaining logbooks.
Recruitment
Recruitment of the workmen, both permanent and temporary, staff
and executives is carried out at the plant level.
Wages and salaries Administration
The minimum wage for temporary workers is deducted by the State
Company. The permanent workers get another benefit like Dearness
allowance House Rent Allowance, Leave Travel Allowance etc.

Milk Procurement department
This department is responsible for procuring milk of desired quality
for the manufacturing of our products. Its role begins at the village
level and ends when the milk reaches the diary dock. The company
has 8 milk cum chilling centers (MCCs) located in Punjab.
Quality AssuranceThe quality assurance Department is responsible for ensuring the
safety and quality of products, adoption of environment protection
measures and compliance of food and health laws through reliable
and constantly improved process.

Engineering Department
This section provides support to factory. Its main function is
maintenance of all equipment, technical up gradation, energy
conservation and implementation of projects.
Finance Department
Main Functions of Finance Department Are As Follows:-
Vendor payment: - When an article arrives at the gate, an
entry permit is made and they are sent to the GOODS
INWARD DISPATCH section (GID).A goods inward from
(gif) is filled up and sent to the finance department for
payment .the vendor submit the bill to purchase department .the
finance department also receives a hard copy of the
corresponding purchase order (PO). There is online passing and
payment system .this contains a database of all purchase order
issued .these are checked against the bills for the GIF, PO
references after which the bill is posted for production of the
payment slips.
Disbursement of salaries:- the HR Department sends a
compile list of all employees on the payroll together with their
monthly working records .The salaries are paid mainly through
the bank, except for a few temporary workers.
Payment to government bodies:-Excise is paid to all suppliers
for goods purchased .The company obtains reimbursement for
the excise from the govt. According to the CENVAT. Excise is
however paid for the finished goods. Octroi is paid to civic
authorities for goods arriving from outside Nabha .Property tax,
insurance and sales tax are also paid in case of accidents,
breakdowns are called for assessment, when a claim is filed.
VAT is paid to Excise and Taxation Department of Punjab.
Milk accounting:- every milk supplier has a code , the first
two digit indicating whether the milk is from cow, buffalo and
the next three digits indicating the supplier .payments are made
within 10 days by cheque/MT/DD.
Cash/banking:- There are separate accounts for raw material
excluding milk ,stores, services , capital and packing
material .every department submits its monthly cash
requirement and sends it to finance where it is consolidated.
Payment of services: - the finance department pays for various
services like rent, truck hire etc.
Capital budgeting: - every department submits an annual
budget , which is allocated quarter wise . The concern
department also sends a capital investment proposal, which has
to be approved in different forums depending on the investment
required.
