Stress gets bad press, but sometimes it's useful. Your body's stress response can help you focus in job interviews, or prepare you for action if you're in danger. It can even help you line up a perfect putt on the golf course. It's not "stress" that's bad, it's "too much stress" that's the problem because that stress response should only be activated sparingly. With your body relaxed, let your mind wander for

a few moments ― you may even begin to see solutions to some of the problems that

Unit 13 Day 2 Leading Off Hiroshi worked for a microchip manufacturer for 42 years. Upon his retirement, all the staff turned out for his send-off. It was a grand affair. He was showered with handshakes and good wishes. People thanked him for being a mentor to them. At the end of the night, the CEO gave him a card, signed by everyone, with "Best Wishes for Your Golden Years!" splashed across the front. ヒロシはマイクロチップ・メーカーに 42年間勤務した。退職の際には、彼を見送るために全従業員が集まった。それは大きな行事だった。彼は大勢の人と握手を交わし、たくさんの祝詞を浴びた。立派な指導者でいてくれたことに対し、人々は彼に感謝の言葉を述べた。そしてその夜の終わりには、CEO（最高経営責任者）から彼にカードが贈られた。そのカードには皆の署名があり、表紙全体には「よい黄金時代（老後）をお迎えください！」と大きく書かれていた。

For a while Hiroshi enjoyed the change of pace. He didn't have to get up early to drive to work every day; he had more time to spend with his wife; and he found himself appreciating the little things in everyday life. しばらくの間、ヒロシは気分転換を楽しんでいた。車で通勤するために毎日早起きする必要もなかった。妻と過ごせる時間も増えた。そして、彼は日々の生活の中の些細な物事に感謝している自分に気付いた。

But those feelings didn't last long. Hiroshi soon felt a growing sense of boredom and anxiety. He'd wanted his wife to accompany him on his daily outings, but she had her own social life and preferred to do some things without him. He'd wanted to travel the world, but he worried if his pension would allow that, and so he had to settle for domestic travel. After a while, Hiroshi just gave up and started spending most of his time sitting around the house. Still, he soon became tired of daytime TV and the view from his living room. Unit 14 Day 2 Leading Off City Council to Discuss Solutions to Juvenile Crime 市議会、少年犯罪の解決策について審議予定

A week after two 16-year-olds seriously injured a man in a home robbery, San Marcos city councilors are set to discuss new ways to deal with juvenile crime. "Juvenile crime, particularly violent crime, has been on the increase for years," said councilor Cheryl Peters. "Something has to be done."

16 歳の少年２名が民家強盗を犯し、男性に大けがを負わせてから１週間が経つが、サンマルコス市議らは少年犯罪に取り組むための新たな方策を審議する方針だ。「少年犯罪、特に凶悪犯罪は、長い間増加傾向にあります」とシェリル・ピーターズ議員は述べた。「何か対策を取らなければなりません。」

Authorities disagree about how to best deal with the problem. Some, like Peters, want the justice system to crack down on young offenders.
