A1: Becoming familiar with students’ background knowledge and experiences.

Ex. At Elmdale Elementary School, a large portion of the students did not speak fluent English. Knowing this helped me to plan effective lessons (a lot of demonstrations).

A2: Articulating clear learning goals that are appropriate for the students.

Ex. When teaching a lesson on over hand throwing, I had the 5th grade students throw to a partner at a short distance, and explained to them that our goal for the day was to practice the correct throwing form.

Page 8: Internship Power Point Presentation

A3: Demonstrating an understanding of the connections between the content that was learned previously, the current content, and the content that remains to be learned in the future.

Ex. At Hellstern, I have taught a lesson on dribbling a basketball, another on shooting a basketball, and plan to teach a lesson focusing on lay ups to tie all of skills together.

A4: Creating or selecting teaching methods, learning activities, and instructional materials or other resources that are appropriate for the students and that are aligned with the goals of the lesson.

Ex. At Elmdale, during the over hand throwing with a football lesson, I had the smaller students throw with smaller footballs. I also had them throw at appropriate distances depending on their individual arm strength.

Page 9: Internship Power Point Presentation

A5: Creating or selecting evaluation strategies that are appropriate for the students and that are aligned with the goals of the lesson.

Ex. At Elmdale, during my lesson on over hand throwing, I evaluated the students on their form, not how far they could throw the ball, because the focus of the lesson was their throwing form.

Page 10: Internship Power Point Presentation

B1: Creating an environment that promotes fairness. Ex. At Hellstern, I gave all of my students their own

basketball during a dribbling lesson, and allowed each of them equal time to participate in the activities.

B2: Establishing and maintaining rapport with the students. Ex. At Hellstern, I have “social time” duty during lunch

time. This allows me to talk with the students and get to know them better.

B3: Communicating challenging learning expectations to each student.

Ex. At Elmdale, I during the over hand throwing lesson, I asked the students to take a step back each time they completed a pass to their partner, and continue challenging themselves.

Page 11: Internship Power Point Presentation

B4: Establishing consistent standards of classroom behavior.

Ex. At Hellstern, I have made it clear to the students that If they talk while I am giving instructions, they will have to sign the behavior book, regardless of who they might be.

B5: Making the physical environment as safe and conducive to learning as possible.

Ex. Each day during off-season football at Hellstern, I make sure that each of the students has a spotter when lifting weights.

Page 12: Internship Power Point Presentation

C1: Making learning goals and instructional procedures clear to students.

Ex. When one of my classes at Elmdale played “scooter football” I explained to them that the day’s lesson focus was on teamwork, and demonstrated how they were to work together and score during the game, without breaking the rules.

C2: Making content comprehensible to students. Ex. To avoid the language barrier with some of the

Hispanic students at Elmdale, I demonstrated each of the activities.

Page 13: Internship Power Point Presentation

C3: Encouraging students to extend their thinking. Ex. I always try to allow a few minutes at the end of

each lesson to ask open ended questions about the lesson. After a weight lifting lesson this week, I asked the students which muscles each exercise worked the most.

C4: Monitoring students’ understanding of content through a variety of means, providing feedback to students to assist learning, and adjusting learning activities as the situation demands.

Ex. During a galloping lesson at Elmdale, I had the students perform the skill at different speeds, in different directions, and with different “lead legs.” This helped me to see if they really understood the correct form if the skill.

Page 14: Internship Power Point Presentation

C5: Using instructional time efficiently. Ex. With the elementary school children, I knew

that more instructional time was needed for each lesson, but by giving demonstrations I was able to minimize this time. The less instructional time is needed for the middle school students, so I don’t waste class time by talking too much about the activities.

Page 15: Internship Power Point Presentation

D1: Reflecting on the extent to which the learning goals were met.

This occurs after a lesson has been taught. If the goals were not met, come up with different teaching strategies.

Ex. After I taught an ineffective lesson on hiking a football to a 1st grade class, I came up with more effective cues for the next time that I taught the lesson.

D2: Demonstrating a sense of efficacy. Ex. I have tried to carry out my duties during this

internship to the best of my ability on a daily basis, and I strive to help the students in any way possible.

Page 16: Internship Power Point Presentation

D3: Building professional relationships with colleagues to share teaching insights and to coordinate learning activities for students.

Ex. At both placements during my internship, my mentor teachers have provided me with helpful knowledge and strategies for teaching the lessons.

D4: Communicating with parents or guardians about a students learning.

I have not had much experience with this, but I have seen my mentor teachers speak with parents/guardians, and solve the issue at hand quickly and respectfully.

Page 17: Internship Power Point Presentation

I have learned many new teaching techniques regarding class management.

I have learned new strategies which will help my lessons to be more effective.

I have learned about managing instructional time with students of different ages.

I have learned that young students will not be enthusiastic unless you are enthusiastic yourself.

I have learned that I still have a lot to learn.
