Monthly ReportJuly 2020
15 new Members joined IMnI since 2019

Most of these new IMnI Members are producers of Manganese (Ordinary or Chemical category),
and the others are traders or industry service providers.
IMnI now represent 87 major Mn companies,
including 23 Chinese, ensuring a better coverage of this major market for the Mn industry
More details on these
companies are available
here (for IMnI Members)
1 – Crude steel production
3
Global crude steel output declined in June to about 148 million mt, down by 0.3% from May on
decreasing output in EU and Americas, and it was 9% lower than in June last year. YTD production fell
by 7% compared to the first 6 months of 2019, as the Covid-19 pandemic continued to weaken market
conditions.
• China: June 2020 production was 1% lower than in the previous month according to Worldsteel, but 5%
higher than in June last year. Production in the first 6 months of this year remained stable from the same
period of last year according to CRU data (2% higher according to Worldsteel).
• Rest of the world: output in June remained consistent from the previous month as the production increase
in Middle East, other Europe and Africa was offset by production cuts in EU and Americas. YTD output was
down by 14% and the rest of the world now represents 44% of global production.
Monthly steel production figures by country are available here (for IMnI Members)
2 – Silico-manganese (SiMn) production
4
Global SiMn production increased by 1% in June from the previous month to around 1.4 million mt, on
rising production in Asia & Oceania and Europe. SiMn year-to-date production fell by 6% compared to
the first 6 months of 2019 due to global production cuts.
• Asia & Oceania: production rose by 2% from the previous month. The increasing output in China, India and
Malaysia compensated decreasing production in South Korea. YTD production in the region dropped by 4%
from the previous year on declining supply in most countries except Indonesia and South Korea.
• CIS: output dropped by 5% MoM in the region, on decreasing supply from all countries. In the first 6 months
of the year, output contracted by 13%, due to production cuts in Kazakhstan and Ukraine, which offset the
production increase in Russia.
More details on SiMn statistics are available here (for IMnI Members)
5
Global HC FeMn production slightly contracted by 0.6% in June to 291,000 mt, as a result of production
cuts in Asia & Oceania and Europe. And the YTD output was 12% lower than the same period of the last
year due to production cuts in all the regions.
• Asia & Oceania: production contracted by 1% in June as production cuts in South Korea and Malaysia
offset increasing output in China, India and Vietnam. YTD production was 10% lower YoY as all countries
recorded production cuts except Vietnam.
• CIS: supply rose by 1% as increasing output in Ukraine compensated production cuts in Russia. But the
YTD output decreased by 10% YoY on account of lower production in Russia and Ukraine.
• Africa & Middle East: output increased by 15% on rising output from South Africa and Iran. But YTD output
decreased by 13% YoY due to production cuts in all countries except Iran.
3 – High-carbon ferro-Mn (HC FeMn) production
More details on HC FeMn statistics are available here (for IMnI Members)
4 – Refined ferro-Mn (Ref FeMn) production
6
More details on Ref FeMn statistics are available here (for IMnI Members)
Global refined ferro-manganese production contracted by 3% in June from the previous month, to
around 92,000 mt on production cuts in Europe & CIS. And YTD production was 17% lower than the
same period of the previous year due to global production cuts.
• Asia & Oceania: supply rose by 2% MoM in June on increasing production in China, India and Vietnam.
YTD output dropped by 9% from the first 6 months of last year as lower output from China, India, Japan, and
Vietnam offset the production increase in South Korea.
• Americas & Africa: production in June was 33% higher than in the previous month on rising supply from
Brazil and South Africa. And the YTD production was 27% lower YoY due to production cuts in all countries.
• Europe & CIS: output dropped by 50% in June from the previous month because of production cuts in
Norway, and the YTD production was 33% lower than Jan-Jun 2019 as production cuts in Spain and Norway
offset the rising supply from Ukraine.
5 – Manganese ore production
7More details on Mn ore statistics are available here (for IMnI Members)
Global Mn ore supply rose by 15% in June from the previous month, to 1.7 million mt Mn units. Over the
first 6 months of this year, the output fell by 13% from the same period last year on lower production in
all regions.
• Africa & Middle East: supply increased by 18% MoM in June on recovering production in Gabon, Morocco
Namibia, South Africa and Iran. But Africa’s Mn ore production in the first 6 months of this year was 13%
lower than in the same period of 2019 as the increasing output in Gabon, Ivory Coast and Iran was offset by
production cuts in all the other countries.
• Asia & Oceania: output rose by 7% MoM in June on rising production in India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand
and Vietnam. The output in the first 6 months of 2020 was 19% lower than in the same period of the previous
year due to production cuts in all countries except Thailand and Vietnam.
6 – Manganese metal production
8More details on EMM statistics are available here (for IMnI Members)
Global manganese metal production expanded by 4% in June to 129,000 mt, but it was 7% lower than in
the same period of last year. Global output decreased by 13% in the first 6 months of this year.
• China: EMM supply increased by 4% in June to 124,000 mt, but it was still 6% lower than in June 2019.
Domestic EMM price was near or below production cost at the end of the month, some plants said they
would cut production if price remained under pressure. The YTD production was 12% lower than the first 6
months of last year.
• ROW: production rose by 7% in June from the previous month to 5,000 mt, but it was 26% lower than in the
same period of last year. In the first 6 months of this year, the supply from the rest of the world was 26%
lower than in Jan-Jun of 2019.
