Smart City Week 2012 The Key Elements to Smart City Success

As outlined in the New Smart City Declaration of October 2011, we believe that there are five key elements essential for the success of Smart City projects.

1. A fascinating concept The residents and companies who form the core of the Smart City ideal must be able to expect an improvement in the quality of life, as presented in a concept that is easy to understand, and makes them want to gather and reside there.

2. Resident-oriented infrastructure The infrastructure must be in place to provide services essential for improved quality of life, such as for health, welfare, environment, energy, disaster prevention and response, safety and freedom of movement.

3. Creation of new services The creation of new services addressing a wide range of corporate and market needs, not only traditional demand from residents, public use, or specific industries or occupations.

4. Sustainable operation Continuing awareness of the need for economic, rationalized operation, to support sustainable urban operation.

5. Dissemination of the Japan experience to Asia and the world Valuable experience gained from resolving pollution issues, building safer communities, dealing with natural disasters and addressing the problems of an aging population must be shared with Asia and the world.

The Smart City Business Takes Off: Announcing “Smart City Week 2012”

Over 400 projects in action worldwide, and a market potential estimated to hit 4,000 trillion yen by 2030... Organizations around the world are getting involved in smart cities, which bear such incredible promise, and in the last year smart city projects have reached a major milestone: the transition from demonstration trials to full-scale projects. In 2013 the first results from actual projects are expected to appear.

People in the industry need to share the latest smart city information, including successful results worldwide and the latest developments. Smart City Week gathers information from around the globe, and disseminates information on activities in Japan, bringing together all the people, information and business in the smart city sector.

The first international conference last year brought 5000 people together to engage in discussion and develop the New Smart City Declaration. Today, that declaration defines directions for corporate growth. Industry leaders from many nations will attend the second conference, this year. Take a look at the depth and breadth of the program. City development managers from many East Asian nations will participate in the newly established Asia Smart City Council, created in recognition of the importance of closer international collaboration, while the Local Government Summit is designed to facilitate communication and cooperation between Japanese local governments and corporations. Tie-ups with foreign media in America, Europe, China and Southeast Asia ensure that all the knowledge and experience of Smart City Week is made available to other lands.

What makes a city truly smart? And what business models can ensure the long-term survival of the smart city? Smart City Week is the place to be to consider these questions and find new solutions, to tell the world what you have to offer, and to discover new business opportunity.

First Step Toward Concrete Achievement of Smart City Concept The events held and implemented in Smart City Week 2012 will be studied, discussed, and decided by an “Advisory Board” and “Steering Committee” consisting of experts from local government entities and corporations. Program positioning and selection, etc., of key persons invited to international conferences, etc., is expected to elicit perspectives and solutions for sketching out new Smart Cities. At Smart City Week 2011 last year, valuable information on the state of Smart City projects was provided by various lecturers from Japan, from Western countries, and also from emerging countries, and this information was used to present a “New Smart City Proclamation” to the world. At Smart City Week 2012, specific examples of Smart City business that have already advanced to the actual business stage, and where they are headed, and business models in the Smart City market, are to be presented by key persons involved in Smart Cities around the world, and national and local government officials, together with thorough discussions. At the same time, the conference will be used to present to the world the shape of Japan’s urban recovery projects. The Advisory Board and Steering Committee members are as shown in next page (in kana syllabify order, honorifics omitted).
