Importance of Structure

• When designing structured activities it is

important to answer these four questions:

–What am I supposed to do?

–How much do I have to do?

–How will I know when I’m finished?

–What comes next?

Structured Turn-Taking

• Variety of activities

• Requirement of some classrooms to participate in

a STT activity—then they can have free play

• Often eliminates disagreement in activities; students tend to argue with people not schedules

• Prevents getting in a “battle of words”

• Supports those who are slower processors of information

Teach Non-verbal Skills NONVEBALLY

• If you don’t need to talk to do the activity, you shouldn’t need to talk to teach it.

• OK for typically developing students

• Can create prompt dependence

• Use visuals whenever possible!

Vocabulary Selection

• Depends on which branch of the theme you’re using (just sea animals; sea and beach; sea, beach, and summer etc.)

• Repetition, repetition, repetition

• Make it meaningful (region-relevant vocabulary- palm trees on a Minnesota beach?)

• Embed in different activities throughout the day/week/month

Teaching your Vocabulary

• Model, model, model

• Use visuals (and pair word with visual)

• Scaffold: use language at the student’s level + one step above

• Embed in different activities throughout the day/week/month

• Activities: errorless or complex (right/wrong answers)

Teaching your Vocabulary

• For those with more significant communication needs…

– Use CORE vocabulary

– Please use visuals!!!

– Accept every communication attempt as a correct response

– Use their augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) device

– Create communication opportunities, it’s OK to sabotage every once in a while!

Accessing the Vocabulary

• Eye Gaze- hold two choices and see at which one the student looks

• Direct Selection- physical contact with a choice

• Scanning- various types (partner assisted, step scanning, auto scanning, etc.) and patterns (linear, group, row/column, etc.)

• “Tell me what you want”

• Natural prompt + gesture to board or device

• Point to icon being requested and ask him/her to select that icon

Pearls of Wisdom

Switch vs. voice output communication aid/device (VOCA)• Switch: a piece of equipment that activates

something else; or makes an individual able to access not previously accessible. Does not have a voice component.

• Voice Output Communication Aid (VOCA): The original term used to describe communication devices with speech output. These are also called Speech Generating Devices (SGD).

• Use pictures/graphics to identify each switch/VOCA

NO NAKED SWITCHES/VOCAs

Velcro “rule”- Velcro has a soft side (female) and scratchy side (male)

• “Soft stays”-meaning that the soft Velcro stays on the ‘home’ surface, anything removable would have male Velcro

• Any pull-off pictures/icons should be able to stick to your shirt

• “The female stays home, while the male runs around.” (quote shared in grad school)

– Cariboo

– Very rare! If you see it at garage sales or in thrift stores, GET IT!!

– Great to add your own vocabulary to the top and do it as a matching game or put answers to a WH question on the top and then they open a box when they answer the question
