Every ride is a journey

Main Stay’s mission is to encourage, enrich and empower individuals through the therapeutic benefits of horses, animals and nature in an uplifting and nurturing

setting. Main Stay is a place where bodies are challenged, minds embrace possibilities, and spirits are renewed.

ANNUAL REPORT

2014

~Inspiring Unbridled Joy~

Dear Friends,

Main Stay embarked on a new journey two years ago when we announced that we would begin offering Animal-Assisted and Horticultural therapeutic activities formerly offered at the Light Center in Union, IL. This passage into unchartered waters further unfolded this year when we unveiled a new name, logo and tagline, all of which we feel truly embody and represent the Main Stay of today.

A cupola and a directional—what could be more perfect? A cupola sits high above and refreshes, while the weather vane provides direction and a destination. Main Stay energizes the soul and is a place where individuals can reach their full potential and find joy.

At Main Stay, children and adults with disabilities are able to move beyond their boundaries through the healing power of horses, animals and nature and a community of caring professionals and volunteers. You’ll read about those that ride to increase their physical strength or perhaps to find inner peace. Others will take the journey without ever riding and will find themselves through their partnership with a donkey, goat or mini horse.

Last year Main Stay provided 2,400 therapeutic riding sessions, 354 animal-assisted sessions, and 512 equine-facilitated learning sessions to over 200 individuals! Fees charged for these sessions covered less than 20% of our actual expenses. We are committed to keeping our services accessible to those in need. It is only through your generous support of fundraising events like Black Tie & Blue Jeans and the Main Stay’s Riders Challenge along with the funding we receive from private foundations and the sub-stantial gifts of time from our dedicated volunteers that we are able to do so.

We are ever grateful for what you have helped Main Stay achieve this past year. We hope that you take pride in knowing you played a significant role in helping our clients achieve their goals, and in creating these special moments.

“It was a tidal wave of amazingness that came over me!”

Many of our riders have experienced significant challenges in their lives

prior to their arrival at Main Stay. Amanda is no exception and her story

is one of tragedy, hope and progress. Amanda was the victim of a drunk

driving accident in 2010 that left her in a coma for a month and in the

hospital for 4 months. Her life had changed in an instant and she was

barely able to walk up stairs when she returned home. She also suffered

severe depression due to the traumatic brain injury she sustained in the

accident.

Amanda was initially fearful of horses but now in her third season of rid-

ing, she rides independently and loves it! Riding offers an opportunity to

improve skills in all the areas she needs, working her muscles, and im-

proving her balance and stamina. Amanda is now able to follow direc-

tions, problem solve and remember tasks while in charge of a 1000 pound

horse. One of the best aspects of riding is that it’s fun! Amanda always

brings her zest for life and positive attitude to the farm.

Page 2

Courage does not always roar, sometimes courage is the quiet voice

at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow”.

Therapeutic Riding serves individuals with developmental, intellectual and/or physical disabilities. Individualized

goals are set by the entire riding team (instructor, rider/family) and new challenges are added as progress occurs.

her many contributions to Main Stay in Novem-

ber at the Path Intl. Annual Conference in Orlan-

do.

More than 125 volunteers share their time

and talent with Main Stay every week in or-

der to keep the program running! Each year

donated hours increase as we offer more pro-

gramming and go out into the community

for special events. Our volunteers’ contribu-

tions of time are invaluable!

Congratulations to Diane Massier,

the 2014 recipient of the Founders

Giving Award. Diane was speechless

when her name was announced and

we shared with the larger Main Stay

community the many gifts she brings

to the program. Diane is a leader and

side walker in the arena in addition to

grooming and exercising the horses,

and assisting in fundraisers!

2014 Volunteer Highlights:

49 new volunteers with 15 new volunteer trainings offered. Increased programming required therapeutic riding volunteers for an additional 10 hours a week.

Fair/Fall Diddley volunteer hours increased by 51 in 2014 and Special Olympic volunteer hours increased by 70+

Strength and Sustainability

Main Stay was proud to collaborate with a

wide variety of schools and agencies in 2014

including:

SASS/Mentor Group (Pioneer Center)

MCC/SEDOM Prep

Autism Speaks

One Hope United

Family Alliance

Huntley District 158

Woodland Middle School

Child Advocacy Center of McHenry County

McHenry High School District 156

Youth Service Bureau, Day Reporting Center (Pioneer Center)

Lake County Mental Health Department

Big Brothers Big Sisters

One Hope United offers services to vulnera-

ble children, including a therapeutic day school and residential treatment for young people who are in need of specialized care, education and counseling.

Main Stay and One Hope United have been collabo-

rating for nearly 10 years. The combination of our

animals, their young men, an instructor and skilled

volunteers creates a positive environment for learn-

ing about themselves and working with others. Each

session focuses on an important life skill such as

trust, communication or teamwork. Many of the

clients have no previous experience in a farm setting.

Their horses provide immediate feedback, which

provides “in the moment” learning opportunities

that would be hard to duplicate in any other setting.

Our “little herd” illustrates the powerful na-

ture of working with animals.

Huntley School District 158 sends a middle

school’s special education class to attend sessions

throughout the school year. Students may have

disabilities such as ADHD, autism, or an emotional

or behavioral disorder.

Navigating the social mysteries of middle school is

challenging enough, and can be made even more diffi-

cult for an individual with a social or emotional disabil-

ity. Learning to successfully interact with peers in a fun

and low stress environment like the farm allows for

growth and development that can otherwise

be hard to find.

“I love to come here, this place is like a home to me!”

but people will never forget how you made them feel― Maya Angelou

Equine and Animal Assisted Activities utilize educational and therapeutic experiences in an individual or group setting focusing

on the social, emotional and behavioral needs for a wide variety of clients. Individuals with a developmental or behavioral disability,

as well as at-risk youth, meet measurable outcomes which the team of a credentialed staff member, Animal Specialist, client and/or

referring staff member establishes. These sessions also are aligned with Illinois social and emotional learning standards.

~Inspiring Unbridled Joy~

“The boys learn to trust their horse in such a short period of time. The connection and bond with the horses increases their self-esteem. It’s an experience the boys don’t forget.”

McHenry County Community College/SEDOM Pathways Program

A Transition Educational Program for Students with Disabilities

Course offerings at Main Stay include animal assisted activities,

educational components and an opportunity to give back

through a service learning project. A recent Pathways course at

the farm, Equine & Small Animal Exploration, focused on recog-

nizing elements that make up a community, caring/nurturing

behaviors, identifying individual characteristics of different ani-

mals in the surrounding environment, and exploring farm relat-

ed careers. Clients built and installed bluebird houses as their

service learning project through collaboration with the McHenry

County Conservation District.

Therapeutic riding students

now get to enjoy looking for

environmentally beneficial blue-

birds along part of the trails

bordering our hay fields.

SEDOM Career Cluster Program, Vocational Training

Students working on job skills

come to the farm as part of an

alternative school curriculum

which offers vocational training

at many different work environments throughout the county. A

farm setting offers a unique work experience for students as

there are a wide variety of tasks both in the office and around

the farm. Students transitioning into the work force gather new

skills that will assist them in securing a variety of paid positions

in the community.

Page 6

Community Enrichment & Skills Development

Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into

water, the actions of individuals can have far -reaching effects.

Dalai Lama

It takes a specially trained team to offer therapeutic rid-

ing and animal assisted programming with our most vital

members being suitable animals. It would be impossible

to run our programs without them! Animals must be

very special to pass the interview process at Main Stay.

For the therapeutic riding program, the horses must meet

several criteria including having the correct tempera-

ment, size, gait and overall good health. It’s a unique job

for a horse who may have a rider and a leader as well as

two people walking next to them throughout the class.

Finding these extraordinary riding horses is no easy task.

Over 90% of the horses we receive calls on or go visit

don’t pass the initial evaluation. Once a prospective horse

passes a phone interview our Equine Manager travels

with her “trial horse equipment basket”—filled with pool

noodles, noise makers, and foam balls—to see the horse

in person. A full evaluation is done prior to coming to

the farm for a trial. If possible, volunteers assist at the

initial evaluation by functioning as the leader or side

walker to simulate a lesson. If all goes well, the horse is

brought to the farm for a 30-day trial and gradually intro-

duced to the many activi-

ties that may take place

during a lesson. Only then

will a decision be made to

determine if the horse is

suitable for the daily de-

mands of a therapeutic

riding horse. As you can

see, it’s not a quick or easy

process finding the right

equines for our riders, but

it is one that we take seri-

ously due to the im-

portance it has for our

riders. Main Stay’s Equine

Manager and skilled vol-

unteers devote many,

many hours each year

searching for, and working

with, each exceptional

horse for the program.

Page 7

A tolerant attitude, as well as being sensitive to the rider, is of utmost importance for our horses.

“All of the horses have given me happiness and hope”

Go into the world and do well.

Two very special veterinarians deserve recognition

for their in-kind donations this year.

THANK YOU We couldn’t do it without you!

A frequent visitor to the farm, Dr. McGowan shares her

veterinarian expertise in many facets of animal care including

conducting pre-purchase exams on potential horses,

administering routine medical care or tending to an injured

horse. Her knowledge base and genuine love of animals makes

her a valuable part of the Main Stay team. And to top it off, she

donates a significant amount of her services to the program.

Dr. McGowan’s spirit of giving demonstrates her compassion

not only to our animals, but to our clients as well. Thanks to

Dr. McGowan’s generosity, Main Stay has been able to provide

its horses with cutting edge treatments that otherwise would

have been cost prohibitive. The care of the “animal staff” is of

vital importance to the success of the program and we are so

grateful to Dr. McGowan for her continued generosity, caring

and compassion.

ANDREA MCGOWAN, DVM

Another special veterinarian, Dr. Henry, specializes in equine

dental care and provides his services to Main Stay at

significantly reduced rates. Horses, like people, need regular

dental care in order to keep their teeth healthy throughout

their life span. We are very grateful to Dr. Henry for helping

to keep our horses mouths healthy.

Main Stay’s mission is to encourage, enrich and empower individuals through the therapeutic benefits of horses, animals and nature in an uplift-ing and nurturing setting. Main Stay is a place where bodies are challenged,

minds embrace possibilities, and spirits are renewed.

Inspiring Unbridled Joy

Our long-awaited dream of a new facility is here!

Anyone who has visited Main Stay in the past 5 years can confirm that while the 40-acre property is spacious, the physical facility has become woefully inadequate for current programs. On any given day we may have therapeutic riding, animal assisted and equine assisted programs operating at the same time. In addition – clients may be job training and others may be working in the garden areas.

In 2013, Main Stay hired Gillespie Design Group, to design and bring an environmentally friendly facility to life. Together we’ve

designed a temperature controlled building which includes a heated arena, additional stalls with specialized grooming space, offices, clubroom space, non-mounted teaching spaces, and a dedicated space for our incredible volunteers. Equally important, the existing barn will be repurposed to accommodate the ever-growing animal-assisted pro-grams.

With more than 80% of the funds raised, we celebrated the ground-breaking in June 2015 and work has begun.

Stay tuned!

How beautiful a day can be when kindness touches it!
