The Presidents Report Scott Dargan
The cold weather has certainly arrived and this signals that we don’t have long to go until
the end of the season. For those of you who don’t hibernate in coffee shops and the like,
you still have time to get out on the rivers and take advantage of the extra fishing space by
the more fair weather fisher folk. Our fishing activity focus over winter will turn more
towards the lakes, which continue to provide opportunity.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Erhan and Ebony Cinar on the arrival of
their beautiful baby daughter Estelle Grace. We wish you all well and I am pleased to see
that Erhan already has Estelle watching sport and fishing shows on TV!
In relation to club activity over the last month we had the Warburton trip cancelled due to
heavy rainfall, which was a safety issue. The Moorabool Reservoir trip was also cancelled
due to the inability to find a replacement trip leader, which was disappointing. Colin
McMillan and I dropped in to Moorabool on our way back from Ballarat the other day, and
the size of the trout that we saw scared us back into the car. Please remember that you
don’t have to be on the Committee to run a trip, and if you are interested in assisting with
trip planning and coordination then please contact Tony Hyett.
The preparation continues for our 50th Anniversary Dinner and I encourage all members to
buy their tickets for this wonderful event. One of the behind the scenes activities that has
been occurring is the filming of interviews with some of our life members. There are
certainly some stars amongst the group and I accompanied Colin McMillan on the journey to
Ballarat to film the interview with our founding President, Mick Hall. We had a wonderful
day out and Mick provided some great information on the founding years of Southern,
which we will screen at the members night and dinner in June.
In terms of committee activity, we have been heavily focused on the 50th Anniversary
celebrations and also succession planning. If you are interested in joining the committee for
the 2017 / 2018 period then please consider nominating when the notification comes out. I
hope that everyone has also had a chance to admire the new carpet in the clubrooms, which
looks great, and thanks to Ray Boast, Les Pratt, Colin McMillan, Jill McMillan and Judy
Cameron for organising both the government grant and installation.
With the colder months closing in it is also a great opportunity to borrow books or DVD’s
from the library. I know that Colin has been doing a great job keeping all our material up to
date and the Library is such a great resource for all members. If Colin should appear at your
door for a cup of tea, it is more than likely that you may have an overdue library item. He
recently visited a rather well known Life Members home, and during coffee spotted an
outstanding item on said Life Members coffee table. An active conversation ensued and the
item was retrieved without fuss, however we think that this particular Life Members friends
set him up. So the morale of the story – If you see Colin at your door it is probably a raid!
There is quite a bit of club activity in May with a Goulburn River trip and a beginner’s skill
development trip on the Steavenson River. The casting season has also kicked off, and casual
fly tying continues. This weeks member’s night will be a pie and movie night.

“Charles Bradley” Flies for Sale
You may have noticed the new fly boxes on top of the fridge in the clubrooms? Fly boxes is a
bit of an understatement, you will understand if you have seen them recently. These new
display cabinets contain a vast array of flies that the club managed to secure at a
preferential rate.
The usual donated flies will also be located in these display cabinets, so will still be able to
get yourself a genuine Max Kepert fly.
The flies are for sale at a price of $1.50 each. Please see Steven Clements or Paul Harris for
payment on the night.
Regular Fly Tying Group
The regular fly tying group meets on the third Thursday of the month.
The intent is for those who are interested in meeting regularly to tie flies, learn from others,
demonstrate a new pattern or simply talk fly tying. Note that the club will not be supplying
any materials; it is the responsibility of people attending to bring along all they need,
although the clubs vices will be available for use.
For further information please contact Paul Harris on 0412 774 123.

Barra in the Pondage Dave Egan
It’s more than ten years since I suggested to fisheries at
a meeting in Traralgon that they put Barra into
Hazelwood Pondage. I remember I got laughed at and
told it was a stupid idea. It was with some satisfaction
that on the second night it was opened I caught my first
Barra on a fly.
Since then I have caught 7 on the fly and one in a
howling gale on a popper and am hoping for a few
more before they die. I wont lie it hasn't been easy and
the learning curve started way down low.
10 things I have learnt since the Barra went in:
1/ Think outside the box. Fish aren’t always where you
think they should be and often they can be caught in
most unlikely places.
2/ What you think is logical isn't always so and visa
versa.
3/ Sharing knowledge is the best way to learn.
4/ There is no substitute for hard work.
5/ Work out the best times to fish and go then, you can waste a lot of time fishing to fish
that aren’t there. First and last light followed by night times is always best.
6/ Listen and watch the local gun
fishermen they usually are the first to
break the code.
7/ Most people give up quickly if
something is difficult.
8/ Many cant be bothered trying
something new, even when its dished
up on their doorstep.
9/ Even non fly fishers can be worth
listening to at times.
10/ Bait seek cover in structure and
the big fish follow the bait.

There have been some very hard nights and some fantastic highlights in the short history of
Barra in the pond. Targeting and catching a new species is always fun. Watching my mate
Steve play a 77cm monster for half an hour on 2kg line and netting it for him was a big
highlight. Watching him catch another the next morning nearly as big right next to me
wasn't so good. This morning I watched Steve at 6 am hook a Barra and pass the rod to his
5-year-old son. They lost the fish but 5 minutes later he hooked another and they landed it,
that has to be a highlight. A triple hook-up and land of 3 fish with two strangers from
Melbourne on night was excellent fun. With 2 weeks to go I’m hoping to get one over 80 cm
but with these hard fighting acrobatic fish any fish is a good fish.
