W elcome to the May/June edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.

In or out? Stay or leave? It’s the question on the lips of everyone, from our world leaders to the person on the Clapham omnibus. There are arguments on both sides. Nobody can say for sure what are the ramifications for us on either side, and the press is full of the most alarming conjecture. The Eurovision Song Contest has us divided. Here at Inside Magazine, we always seek the truth. So here are the facts. If we’d never been in the Eurovision Song Contest, Brotherhood of Man might not have topped the charts in 1976. If we stay in Eurovision, they might even come back. If we leave, we may not ever have to listen to the entry from Azerbaijan. The choice before us is historic. We hope that we have helped with our succinct analysis. Before you decide, maybe just hum “Save Your Kisses for Me”. It helped me get things in perspective. PS A reminder that this years Chingford Village Festival will be held on June 11th, for more details see pages 10 & 11.

T his is another story of the quite-goods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran

away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade. Now for some reason an encyclopaedic knowledge of football isn’t recognised amongst the chattering classes in the way that is, say, an appreciation of French fin de siècle literature. At posh dinner parties, when snobby friends compare Rimbaud and Baudelaire, they look at me askance when I interrupt, shouting “Yeah, but who won the cup in 1932, eh?” When I say ‘askance’, it’s more like a sort of sneer, tempered with disgust, although this may have more to do with my table manners. But recently someone else shouted, whilst my friends were discussing Renaissance sculpture, “Yeah, but what’s the name of AC Milan’s stadium?”

I looked up with shock, a little askance, but not sneeringly. “Why,” I replied, “The answer of course is San Siro.” At this he made that noise that they make on quiz shows but which I can’t spell, a bit like nuh-urrrr. “Actually,” he said – and he was very askance and sneering – “Actually, it’s Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.” “Anyhow,” Melissa ploughed on. “I do feel that Donatello in many ways was the first to master bas-relief.”

I wasn’t listening - I never really had been - but was frantically googling Meazza. And guess what. He is a forgotten flame that flared and then faded.

Born in Milan in 1910, his father gave him a rifle when he was young, but Giuseppe cried. He’d wanted a football. Obsessed with the game, he played with a rolled up rag, with cloth around his feet until they bled. His Mum hid his shoes to try to end the kickabouts. His Dad died in the First World War.

In 1922, with his mother still averse to his dreams, Giuseppe Meazza went on hunger strike for three days. Mum gave in. Giuseppe joined a local side. Scouts for AC Milan failed to

spot him, but their rivals, Internazionale, saw potential. They fed up the scrawny lad.

In the 1927 season, Inter had to play two games in a day. Meazza, not expecting to play, ate a large breakfast. He was still considered underweight. Inter lost the first game of the day and opted for changes, including the somewhat full-up Meazza. He scored twice. The press were quick to spot a star in the making. Two years later,

Inter, then known as Ambrosiana, won the title and Meazza was the leading scorer, including a hat-trick inside the first four minutes.

He was renowned for his dribbling abilities. (If you don’t follow football, ask a friend what this means – it’s not as gross as it sounds.) He was picked for Italy in 1930. In 1931 he scored his greatest goal of all against the mighty Austria, dribbling from the halfway line and rounding the keeper with a flick.

His special trick was the foglia morta, or dead leaf, where his shot would drop at the last moment under the bar past the keeper. He was the greatest footballer of his era, an idol, a star. He wore designer suits and drank champagne. He was a womaniser. He smoked – which the rest of the team were not allowed to do. His bad

boy image clashed with Mussolini’s dreams of a clean and wholesome nation, but the dictator was happy enough for Meazza to represent Italy as their poster boy at the 1934 World Cup.

He retired from playing in 1946. In his honour, the San Siro stadium was renamed Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in 1980. It’s the home of AC Milan and Inter, for both of whom he’d played. After a long

career in management, he died in 1979.

He’s still revered in Italy. A solo goal is still called a Meazza. But I didn’t know that that particular stadium was named after him. And nor, incidentally, did Melissa, though I somehow doubt whether she cares.

And, for the real football anoraks amongst you, the 1932 FA Cup was won by Newcastle. That’s somewhere up North, Melissa darling.

THE PRICE OF BEING A HOMEMAKER T he average stay-at-home wife or

husband can spend on average 56 hours a week performing essential household tasks such as cooking, cleaning and laundry. If childcare is taken into account, this could add another 6 hours to each day. How would the breadwinner cope if the homemaker wasn’t able to do these tasks? Would they be able to rely on the services of family and friends or would they have to pay for help such as cleaning and childcare? Based on the current minimum wage of £6.70 per hour the cost to pay for these services could amount to over £19,000 – even more if you add in childcare. If you’re the main homemaker it makes good sense to ensure that you are protected against

life’s unexpected and unwelcome events to ensure that money would be available if you weren’t in a position to provide the services that your family rely on. If you’re the main breadwinner you should also think about increasing your life cover to include risks such as life-threatening illness, accident or unemployment. Regular Reviews Make Sense - The right insurance can protect your finances, home and family in the event of incapacity, serious illness, accident or death. The earlier you take out a plan the lower the cost is likely to be. If you have insurance in place, it’s a good idea to review it from time to time to be sure that as your life changes your cover changes to match your circumstances.

A nna Kennedy was awarded a well-deserved OBE in 2012 and was also winner of Tesco Mum of the Year

2013 for her amazing work supporting children and young people with autism. Originally from Middlesbrough, Anna and Sean Kennedy are parents of two boys, Patrick and Angelo, who are both affected by autism. In 1999, having been turned away by no fewer than 26 special needs schools when searching for appropriate educational facilities for their sons, Anna set up Hillingdon Manor School – the largest school in Europe for children and young people with autism, and supports over 50,000 parents of children with autism through her charity website. Anna also has set up a school in Bromley that caters for children with ASD (autism spectrum disorder). In 2008 Anna co-authored her best-selling biography “Not Stupid” which poignantly portrayed her struggle to find appropriate provision for her boys. In 2013 Anna received an Honorary Doctorate in Professional Achievement from Teesside University. Anna got her big break last March when she was selected to dance in Comic Relief’s People’s

Strictly where she performed the Charleston with Robin Windsor live to the nation and scored a fantastic 40! Anna Kennedy Online was formed in 2009 and is dedicated to promoting

the inclusion and equality of children and adults with an autism spectrum condition throughout society. The charity consists of Anna and her husband Sean who represents the charity with legal matters, Lisa Robins, Austin Hughes (senior practitioner), Tally Nothey (marketing) and 4 Charity Champions. Anna Kennedy Online hosts Autisms Got Talent which has received high media attention. It provides a platform and great opportunity to replace the negative aspects with hope, fun, laughter and positivity and celebrates autism and is unique to any other show across the world. The performers consist of singers, actors, musicians and dance troupes, who fly the flag for autism and show what people with autism and asperger syndrome are capable of. I work voluntary for the charity as a Charity Champion covering Essex. Once a year I organise a fundraising event for the Charity in Essex. Last August, Spurs Legends played against our AKO Celebrity side in which Jeff Brazier captained our side and a team of celebrities including Dappy, George Gilbey and Mark E Wright were a few names to complete our team. This year The Essex Totes Amaze Ball is being held on 9 July at Woolston Manor. Our VIP Guests for this event include Francine Lewis, Ian Royce, Linda Robson, The Gilbey family from Goggle Box and the Alberti Twins from the reality show Love Island.

ANNA KENNEDY OBE WITH THE PERFORMERS FOR AUTISMS GOT TALENT, LONDON IN MAY 2015

My path crossed with Anna’s last March when I saw her on The People’s Strictly. After meeting with Anna and her fantastic team, I was delighted when Anna gave me the opportunity to join AKO. The charity have supported me immensely with my son Harrison who has autism and it is a pleasure to be part of such of a great team. Having had experience of going through the diagnosis and recently schooling, it enabled me to help and

support other families in Essex who are having these difficulties through the charity.

Advertising locally works…

“We have been committed to The Inside Magazine for only 2 months now and can see a long standing business relationship developing. The Inside Magazine understood the requirements of our business and its needs and historically we knew they could deliver. Thanks to The Inside Magazines' efforts we have generated a larger database and our clientele has grown dramatically. Being new advertisers within this magazine we understood it normally takes at least 6 months to get recognised/noticed but this month’s advert we have had over 10 leads/enquiries all of which have turned into business/sales. The decision was made not just on price but also because of the response and feedback we heard back from other advertisers. The Inside Magazine team have been professional and courteous at all times and the scheme has been a great benefit to Abbey Antiques & Furnishings/The Abbey Group. We have no hesitation in recommending The Inside Magazine to future companies/businesses but should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank You and Kind Regards” -Lisa Cannings - Director, Abbey Antiques, Furniture Repairs
