Welcome to our July/Augustissue.Children are due to break up for their summer holidays and mostparents have set aside time off work to be with their family. eschools’, six weeks break is a long time outside of a normalroutine and knowing how to juggle commitments is not always easy.

However we live in Essex (part from Wanstead and SouthWoodford which have London postcodes!) but essentially – we’reall in the same vicinity and Essex is truly a wonderful place. Onlya few of us will be away for the full six weeks – mainly it’s two ora maximum of three but with a massive selection of choices, venues and activities to help us fill those other weeks, I havecarefully researched a wealth of information in order to make myrecommendations. Hopefully, just some of these ideas might helpease the pain of: “Mummmm…. Dadddddd…. I’m bored! Whatwe doing and where are we going today?” However, help is at hand!

Most of us have only ever watched the Olympics on television. A lucky few have perhaps gone to the games in some exotic city.Even luckier are those who have tickets for the Olympics here in London!

In total, 8,000 will be carrying the Olympic Flame as it travelsacross the UK. Imagine holding the torch that will be watched byfriends, family, local community, people in the UK and evenworldwide?

To enjoy at least some semblance of the fun, without too muchexpense and just to experience a one-off opportunity, would be toactually ‘see and witness’ the Olympic Torch. Particularly relevantto this readership is July 22nd. So charge your cameras, load upyour batteries, buy extra film if you haven’t gone digital and makea note in your diary: Sunday, 22nd July and just one week beforethe Games begin.

Stephen Murphy hosts ‘e Wine Factor’ in 75 Station Road,Chingford, an independent wine shop. He has wine runningthrough his veins having been in the business all his working lifeand sources wines from around the globe. e Wine Factor offersa heady range of wines and beers backed up with knowledge andexpertise – it’s not just a purchase, it’s an experience. is monthStephen has selected the following wines of distinction.

Enjoy your summer break and see you again in September.

TRUST ME I’M ANESTATE AGENT !Well surprise surprise, afteryears of holding the popularvote of being the last trustedof any trade or profession,Estate Agency has recentlymoved several places down thetable of the reviled.

Now my fellow agents andfriends, let’s not get tooexcited. We may have beenovertaken by the Bankers,Insurance Salesmen, CarSalesmen, e Media,Pharmaceutical Companiesand the old bogey men (andwomen) the Politicians andLanded Gentry, but we have along way to go to move fromthe table of reviled to the tableof revered.

Believe it or not, back inthe mid 1960’s when (as amere child) I entered thisprofession, numerous propertyowners were so distrustful ofAgents that they chose toadvertise their homes for sale“privately” in the classifiedcolumns of the local rag.Going as far as to end theirusually poorly worded andbadly displayed advertisementwith the words “NO AGENTS”!

In fact it was at the time ofthe first credit squeeze, as itwas then called, in the mid tolate 1960’s, that encouragedthese overly cautious anddistrusting sellers to capitulateand call in their friendly localagent (as I was known) andask for help. Knowing fullwell that without an agent’sassistance in arranging thenecessary finance, their salehad little chance of goingthrough.

BUT WHAT OF TODAY?Home owners advertisingprivately are as rare as “Hen’steeth”. One reason may be

because the canny seller is wellaware of the huge cost ofmarketing and the realisationthat if the property does notsell it costs them nothing, andif it does sell it really is thebuyer who pays, as in theseller’s mind they havecalculated the costs of sellingwithin the agreed price.Instructing an Agent to sellyour home thereby becoming a“no brainer” decision. inking back I can distinctlyremember several ownerssaying (before they hung upthe phone or closed the doorin my face) they believedagents deliberately undervalueproperty in order to earn aquick buck. Accusing them ofeither buying the propertythemselves through a thirdparty, or flogging it to one oftheir mates.

HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGEDToday far too many agents oflittle experience or training, are canvassing the books ofagents such as myself, byquoting ridiculously highvaluations and offering to takethe property on at acommission that would barelyequal my marketing costs foreach property.

ese are probably themost testing times for anyoneselling and buying that wehave experienced since thoseearly days of the 1960’s.

Quality homes are few andfar between, mortgages, although becoming a littleeasier, still carry stringentterms and criteria, and thosewho are ready willing and ableto buy are driving a very hardbargain quoting “Cash is King”.

It is in such times that theserious seller should thinkcarefully before selecting anagent to handle their mostvaluable possession.

Today, more than everbefore, my late mother’s sayingof “cheap is dear” could get upand bite those seeking a cheapoption.

ONE FURTHER WORDOF ADVICEHaving chosen your agent,

stick to your choice and bepatient. Marketing periods arenow generally twice as long asin the heady days of 2006/7.As long as you see that your agent is putting everyeffort in to promoting yourproperty for sale with anencouraging description on awide selection of websites withcontinuous (not just one off )media advertising, a buyer willeventually be found. I havepersonally experienced thiswhen selling my erstwhilehome in North London.

Having taken great care inchoosing my sole agent lastJanuary, and agreeing agenerous commission withthem, the property eventuallyreceived offers only last weekfrom two buyers. One ofwhich, having received areduction of 4% from theasking price set seven monthsago, duly exchanged contractsto purchase within 14 hoursfrom the time their solicitorsreceived the papers. e sevenmonths with no offers andlittle action having proved wellworth the wait.

e serious sellers Motto forthe quality home being three“P’s” - No not…. “Position,Position, Position”,…butPromotion, Perseverance and Patience.

Nestled discreetly behindBorders Lane in Loughton is aschool, catering for childrenwith special needs. e pupilsof Oak View School are agedfrom 3-19 years and havesevere and complex needs. Ahigh proportion of pupils arewithin the autistic spectrum.eir lifeline to thecommunity is the school coach- so imagine the dismay whenit broke down…

Speaking about theimportance of the facility, Ms.Dianne Ryan, headteacher atOak View School stated: “It iscrucial for our pupils to have acoach. It allows access to thecommunity, especially forpupils in wheelchairs. Withthis facility, the pupils areeasily and safely, transportedinto local areas as part of thecommunity. ey can go horseriding, enjoy life skills

and work experience atWellgate Farm. eircurriculum is broadened andthey can also enjoy leisureactivities too. is coach is soimportant and we’re all doingour best to raise the necessaryfunds.”

As the school wasdesperate, Variety, theChildren’s Charity, donated

half towards the cost of thenew bus and the schoolborrowed the outstandingamount of £16,000. Howeverthis loan has to be repaid. Alocal businessman, AshleyBermange who is also amember of the Friends of OakView School Association (hisson attends the school) had aninspired idea. By working withlocal restaurants, sponsorscould make a donation of £20and receive a voucher offeringup to 50% discount off a mealfor two, not including drinks.*

So far, a whole range ofrestaurants, keen to supportthe local community andespecially this very importantschool, are now formally

involved in the project.Speaking about OakView School Ashleystated: “It is extremelyimportant that we raisethese funds. ebenefits for the pupilsare paramount – theyneed help. We’re tryingto raise awareness of theschool’s existence and itsimportance. ere’shelp here in Loughton,if children need anoutstanding school. OakView offers a greateducation and facilitiesfor children with

As summerapproaches(allegedly!)despite theflood warnings

and absolute lack of sunshine,we plan our holidays, tripsabroad, respite from the dailygrind and important time withfamily and friends.

Having neighbours to keepan eye on our home andpossessions, is all part of thecare we share with those in ourimmediate vicinity. We watchtheir homes – they watch ours.Working together withcommunity spirit benefits usall. Ensuring that letters arepushed through letter-boxes,picking up parcels left outsidevacant homes.

For most of us, this is justpart of daily life. We do forothers and hope they will dofor us with equal generosity. But being part of a communityis more than just basicassistance – it’s how we alsohelp each other within ourprofessional sphere, with ourdifferent talents and skills thatfacilitate others to reaprewards. e people we holdclose, with whom we dobusiness and whose lives, somehow weave within our

own as important relationshipsare developed and friendshipsare enhanced through mutualrespect.

Last week, my sisterHelena, called for urgent help.My niece Minna was in agony. For anybody who hasexperienced the anguish andpain caused by a wisdom toothmeriting an extraction willsympathise. Excruciating painthat could not be controlled,Helena was desperate for helpand had already pleaded withMinna’s dentist for an urgentappointment. Offered thenext appointment, three weekslater, she was distraught. Did Iknow somebody who couldhelp? Immediately, I emailedAsh. Ash and I both work lateand I knew that if he wasonline – I would have animmediate response. I did.Without hesitation hepromised to assist andrecommended an urgent call(the following morning) to hispractice in order to make anappointment. True to hispromise, Ash made time to seeMinna, despite hisback-to-back appointments.

X-Rays were taken and hisprofessional decision was toimmediately remove the tooth.

Minnawent white with fear. Aveteran anxious-patient, shewas scared. But Ash throughhis naturally, very caringdisposition, assured her shewouldn’t feel any pain. I knowhe is particularly concernedabout anxious patients and hasmany processes in place whichensure they are comfortableand potentially, may evenenjoy their treatments. With amusic system which has everysong imaginable as part of thesoftware, he gently placed theheadphones on her head andMinna shut her eyes. Rihannawould take her elsewhere asshe listened to the music…Within minutes - toothremoved… PAIN GONE.

Where there had been tearsof pain – were replaced withtears of relief and joy. is‘wonderful man’ as he’s nowreferred to by my family, waschivalrous, kind and despitehis own schedule andcommitments, made time tocare for a desperate youngwoman who needed help. Byhelping others – we also helpourselves. It is my pleasure totell the world, he’s a greatdentist, a caring humanitarianand a wonderful family man.

Local media help us tolearn more about ourcommunity and in this respect,Patrick Smith (Fish MediaGroup) offers a literary voiceand presence to our readership.Telling somebody of a gooddeed goes so far. Publishing,

promotingand distributing high-qualitymagazines which are respectedby the local readership, is animportant role and helps us all,to keep in touch.

We all have stories wherewe have been helped. It’s thegestures that matter and arenever forgotten. Howsomebody touches us in aspecial way because they werethere when we needed themand without hesitation or anythought of personal benefit, make that extra effort whichunderpins a relationship. Agesture which elevates fromfriend to a very special person, with whom we can lookforward to a true andmeaningful friendship.

“An acquaintance merely enjoysyour company, a fair-weathercompanion flatters when all iswell, a true friend has your bestinterests at heart and the pluck totell you what you need to hear.”E. A. Bucchianeri Brushstrokes of a Gadfly

Stephen Murphyhosts ‘e WineFactor’ in 75Station Road,Chingford, anindependent wine

shop. He has wine runningthrough his veins having beenin the business all his workinglife and sources wines fromaround the globe. e WineFactor offers a heady range ofwines and beers backed up withknowledge and expertise – it’snot just a purchase, it’s anexperience. is month Stephenhas selected the following winesof distinction.

Poujol Pico, 2010- Vin DePays De L’Herault Vielles Vignes£10.00 per bottleDomaine de Poujol was boughtby the Cripps family in 1994.Robert is English, Kim isAmerican and they farm inwhat was the most unlikely ofplaces to winegrowers at thetime. As the first non-Frenchowners of a Domaine theyquickly distinguishedthemselves by their experienceand strong pioneering spirit.Robert had been in the winetrade in Oxford eventuallygoing on to make wine at someprestigious wineries inCalifornia. Kim had worked

for ten years in Napa also inCalifornia. Together they had adream of making their ownwine in France.

ere are floral notes withsome citric fruit (lemon andlime). It’s fresh and round onthe palate with some body, weight and a lengthy finish. It also comes in a scrummy rose too.

Domaine De Saumerez, Fleur De Liz 2011, Vin De Pays De L’Herault £12.00Just like the white above thisRose is from an area of Francethat you will be hearing a lotmore about. Although theyhave been growing grapes sinceRoman times it is only in thelast 15-20 years thatwinemakers have really startedgetting to grips with the “terroir”that this region has to offer.

is wine is a blend of 90%Grenache Noir and 10% Syrah. It is so fresh that is was beingbottled on the morning that Icollected it, just a few weeksago! Strawberries, Raspberriesand Grenadine on the nose, thiswine has a veritable fruit saladgoing on and with red summerfruits in abundance on thepalate, it’s perfect as an aperitifor with light salads as well asslightly spicy Asian dishes.

Both these wines will beavailable for tasting in storeover the weekends of 21st and28th of July – do pop in.

Parducci Pinot Noir, 2009,Mendocino County,California. Normally £18.99 Just £12.49to LIFE readers who bring inthis articleis red wine is a realblockbuster. Combining theBrashness of the US with thefinesse of a Burgundy this winewill surprise a lot of people.Pinot Noirs tend to be quitelight in style but this has depthand elegance, with hints ofmint, plum, dark berries with ahint of cocoa on the finish. Areal star!

Michael Torino ColeccionMalbec, 2011, CalchaquiValley, Argentina.Normally £8.99 now £7.49Another red Ripe Cherries withCassis on the palate and anovertone of juicy plum. Stillrich enough to stand up to thedemands of Argentina’snational beef dish. A perfectintroduction to the Malbecgrape variety. e Malbecgrape was originally in theBordeaux region and made itsway to Argentina in the late19th Century and has forged a

home there - more so thananywhere else in the world. A quality Malbec shows thevalue and intensity ofArgentinean wine in general.

Beers buffs take note……Finally, before I forget, althoughI would consider myself a winemerchant I also sell 100different beers and 50 Alesfrom across the globe. I havejust got a new shipment ofbeers including GermanWeihenstephan which is theworld’s oldest brewery, datingback to 1040. Yes I couldn’tbelieve it either. Obviously thecurrent stock is fresher thanthat as the monks continue tobrew their amazing lager. Onpouring you will find one of thebiggest heads to any beer. Spicybanana, clove underlay thearomas with the maltinessintegrating amazingly well.Superb!

The 2012 SummerOlympic Games are here!

Starting 27th July, and runninguntil 12th August 2012

The Olympic Games is the biggest sporting event on the planet. With 26 sports, 10,500 athletes and millions of spectators, it’s going to be a busy summer. Giant Olympic

Rings have been unveiled at Heathrow, the Host Airport of the Games, to help provide a spectacular visual welcome to athletes and visitors during London 2012.

Along with plenty of excitement and an incredible atmosphere, the Olympic Games will bring thousands of visitors to London and the UK. is means the transport system will be extremely busy – so if you’re going to a London 2012 sports event or ceremony, it’s important to plan and book your journey well in advance. ere is no spectator parking at London 2012 venues, except for a limited number of Blue badge spaces that must be booked in advance – so we recommend you go by public transport, or in many cases, walking to a London 2012 venue is much quicker and easier than you may think. As well as being a healthy, sustainable way to travel, it gives you the chance to see many sights on the way and soak up the atmosphere of being in a Host City.

The Opening Ceremonye set for the opening scene of the Ceremony, is called ‘Green and Pleasant’. On entry to the Olympic Stadium the audience will see a scene that represents a traditional and idyllic view of the British countryside. e whole of the eld of play in the Stadium will be transformed into the rolling British countryside as the London 2012 Ceremonies Team creates one of the largest sets ever built. e set will be complete with meadows, elds and rivers, and featuring families taking picnics, sport being played on the village green and farmers tilling the soil whilst real farmyard animals graze – including 12 horses, 3 cows, 2 goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese, 70 sheep, and 3 sheep dogs.

Each of the four nations will

be represented by their national ower – the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daodil of Wales and ax from Northern Ireland. Titled ‘Isles of Wonder’, the Olympic Opening Ceremony will open with the ringing of the largest harmonically-tuned bell in the world and is predicted to be viewed live by a worldwide TV audience of over a billion people.

e Opening Ceremony is a celebration showcasing the best of the Host Nation. It also features a parade of all competing nations and the highly anticipated entrance of the Olympic Flame, which ignites the Cauldron and signals the start of the Games.

e Ceremony will provide an

opportunity for the world to view the artistic expression of the Artistic Director (Danny Boyle) and his team, and the culture of our Host City and the UK. ere are certain elements that must feature in every Ceremony, as outlined in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) charter.

e artistic performance of the Ceremony then gets underway and welcomes the world to the London 2012 Games.

e Head of State of the Host Country is received at the entrance of the Olympic Stadium by the President of the IOC. For the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, Her Majesty the Queen will be greeted by Jacques Rogge.

Bad news for all those planning a slinky swimsuit regime - thelongest day of summer has officially been and gone.

So if you haven't already started thinking about your beach body, now's definitely the time to mark your bikini SOS plan on thecalendar, especially if last year's costume is feeling a little too snug!

e dreaded flesh-flaunting season means bikini angst for morethan half of women (53%) who say they feel less confident abouttheir bodies in the summer months, a survey by Nurture skincarereveals.

Yet dedicating just an extra hour or so per week to your beautyroutine can really yield results.

TONE TACTICSMore than 54% of women feel most self-conscious about theirstomachs, according to Slendertone.

Being an enthusiastic gym bunny is the first step (orskip/jog/sprint) towards a slimline figure, but achieving a flatstomach doesn't start and end with exercise.

"Cut out sugar, alcohol andcarbs and start taking aprobiotic supplementapproximately two weeks beforeyour holiday to help boost levelsof friendly bacteria in yourdigestive system, which can helpreduce bloating," advises FionaHunter, nutritionist for Simplecosmetics.

Avoid faddy diets, too, if youwant to keep your skin smoothand supple. "Yo-yo dieting isbad for your skin because youend up becoming deficient inkey nutrients, which can loosenthe skin's elasticity and make itsag," she says.

Familiarise yourself with acirculation-boosting body brushand follow with a firming creamand twice-daily massage to helpkeep your skin taught andtoned.

SKIN PERFECTINGEven the slimmest of us sufferwith imperfections that canmake stripping off at the pool adaunting affair.

Cellulite and stretch marksare linked with hormonal andgenetic factors, so some peopleare much more prone thanothers.

Stretch marks usually appearafter rapid weight gain or loss, with the most common affectedareas being breasts, bum, thighs, hips and stomach.

"For best results treat stretchmarks when they first appear pink and are early in development,"recommends Sally Penford, education manager at the InternationalDermal Institute.

"Moisturise three times a day to help the skin become morepliant, hydrated and better able to stretch. Look for skin productsthat contain vitamin E, cocoa butter, shea butter, omega-3, wheatgerm oil and hyaluronic acid."

ere are laser treatments available which promise to blast awaycellulite and stretch marks, but there are no guarantees they'll vanishcompletely.

SMOOTH OPERATORere's nothing worse than looking down from your sunlounger andseeing flashes of unsightly stubble on your legs.

Ditch the razor blade. Sunlight exposes re-growth even morethan usual, so if you haven't had time to squeeze in lengthy andexpensive laser hair removal sessions, waxing will keep body hair atbay for longer than shaving.

Alley Laundry, Parissa's waxing guru, says: "e first time youwax will likely be the most sensitive but it gets easier over time. Anydiscomfort only lasts for a couple seconds and the smooth resultslast for weeks.

"It's all about choosing the right product for you. If you're abeginner, I suggest starting with pre-waxed strips that are ready touse - just press on and zip off - no heating or fussing required."

Wax strips are also suitcase friendly so ideal for touch-ups when travelling.

GET YOUR GLOW ONIf all fails on your bikini body mission, cheat with a self-tan. Darkerskin and shading in the right areas automatically makes your limbslook leaner.

After you've applied a base layer of subtle tan, wait 10 minutesfor it to soak in before applying a second tactical coat of spray tan onthe areas you want to slim.

"To create the illusion of a slimmer waist, spray the self-tandirectly onto the hip area and around onto the side navel," suggestsFamous Dave celebrity tanning artist Amanda Harrington.

"Wipe in large sweeping motions with a tanning mitt to blendinto your base layer of tanning cream. Spray onto the upper sides ofthe navel to create the darker edges down the sides of yoursilhouette."

e same principles apply to create the illusion of longer legs.Spray tan onto the sides of the thigh from hip to knee, then use longstrokes up and down with your tanning mitt until completelyblended. Also spray the back of the calves, and upwards, to slimdown the backs of your legs.

TRIED & TESTEDGive your beach body a boost with a daily firming potion. Ourtesters try out three variants:Nivea Q10 Plus Firming Body Oil, £6.63 (nationwide)is oil is a bit of a miracle because it actually did what it promised. My skin felt firmer after applying it for about two weeks. Despitethe oily feel on application, it didn't feel greasy for long and smellsheavenly. 4/5ETAT PUR B60 Firming Reshaping Body Care, £14.70(www.etatpur.co.uk)e cream absorbed quickly into the skin and I could feel thesolution instantly tighten. After several weeks of use, my tum andbum felt a lot firmer and my thighs looked more toned. 4/5Darphin Nourishing and Firming Velvet Cream, £39 (0870 034 2566/www.darphin.co.uk)Despite looking thick and buttery in the pot, this luxurious creamabsorbed quickly into my skin so I'm able to get dressedimmediately. My skin felt firmer after use but sadly the productdidn't work any long-term miracles. 3/5

TOOTH WEARPeople are living longer thesedays. With advancements inhealthcare such as fluoridatedtoothpastes and better hygienecare, teeth are also lasting longer. However, through “wear andtear”, teeth are often worn away, and this leads to a number ofproblems. I would like to dealwith the management of wornand discoloured teeth in thisedition.

WHY DO TEETH WEAR AWAY?Teeth are covered by a verystrong, protective outer layercalled enamel. is enamel canbe damaged in one of two ways:attrition (which is when teethgrind against each other) orerosion (which is when aciddamages or erodes the enamelaway). Once the inner layercalled dentine is exposed, theteeth wear away much faster asdentine is a lot softer thanenamel. A useful analogy is tocompare enamel to granite anddentine to chalk.

WHO IS MORE AT RISKFROM WEARING TEETHDOWN?People who clench or grind theirteeth (especially at night whilstasleep) put excessive forces onthe teeth. is can lead to extrastresses being placed on theteeth as well as on the fillings.is results in cracks in the teethand also actual chipping away ofthe outer enamel layer. is has anet result of shortening theteeth, which makes them lessattractive and more sensitive.Acid can also ERODE teethaway. Acid can either come viathe diet, or from within thebody. Foods and drinks that

cause damage to the enamel arecitric fruits, fruit juices, fizzydrinks, and excessive alcohol.Conditions such as anorexia,gastro-oesophageal reflux andpregnancy vomiting can alsotake their toll on teeth!

CAN A “WRONG BITE”CAUSE TEETH TO WEAR AWAY?Yes. If someone has “biteinterferences” on one of the backteeth i.e. the teeth don’t fitproperly and slide into anabnormal biting pattern, thenthis can lead to an alteredfunctional pattern of chewing.is will cause the edges of theenamel on the front teeth towear away. Also, if there aresome back teeth missing, thenthe chewing pressure is fargreater on the front teeth andthis will also cause damage. esolution for these problems is tomake minor bite adjustments toget harmonious movements ofteeth over each other whenchewing, and to replace missingteeth at the back with implantsor bridges to improve the function.

WHAT IS THE BESTTREATMENT FOR WORN TEETH?Teeth that have been damagedby grinding and acid, requirecomprehensive dentistry toachieve the bite to bereconstructed to how it was.Crowns and porcelain veneersare often used to improve theappearance, health and functionof the teeth. e earliertreatment is carried out, thebetter the long term results. For people that grind their teeth,it is important to provide aprotective mouth guard madefrom plastic. is is worn at

night-time and prevents teethgrinding against the opposingteeth. In this way, no furtherdamage can occur. For peoplewith acid erosion, it is vital toidentify the causes and alter thediet accordingly, or getprofessional help and advicefrom the medical practitionerfor a medical cause of acidproduction e.g. from the stomach.

HOW CAN MODERNEQUIPMENT HELP? Smile Design By Ash is one ofthe few practices in the UK thathas advanced computerized biteevaluation equipment called TScan. is is one of the best bitechecking technologies in theworld of dentistry. We canaccurately measure the biteforces between the teethelectronically. is valuableinformation then helps us to sortout bite problems definitively.Once the bite is balanced, thenthe damaged teeth can berepaired or treated to achieve ahealthy situation again.

WHAT IS THE BESTPLACE TO START?Without a doubt – having adetailed dental assessment, which includes photographs,X-rays, impressions for makingduplicate models of your teeth, etc. I offer one of the mostcomprehensive assessments inthe UK. e advantage of this isthat you will have the best adviceand treatment options availablein modern dentistry. My goal isto deliver a healthy, long lastingand attractive smile to suit yourface, age and personality. I onlywork with very skilled andexperienced master ceramisttechnicians that create trulyartistic crowns and veneers.

Chigwell born and bred Robert Shanks is theco-founding Clinical Director of Spine Plus, agroup of clinics based in London and Essex(including Chigwell Osteopathy & PhysiotherapyPractice) offering innovative multi-disciplinary

treatment approaches for back pain, neck pain and othermusculoskeletal complaints. As well as being an Osteopath,Robert is a qualified Pilates instructor and medical acupuncturist. In February Robert was the opening speaker at the 2012 “BACKSHOW” where he spoke on modern treatment options forintervertebral disc problems. More recently Robert and his SpinePlus colleague, Darren Chandler have joined forces withpioneering endoscopic spinal surgeon Martin Knight and toppain consultant Chris Jenner to form e Harley StreetIntegrated Spine Clinic due to open in September 2012.

Q Why are back problems so common? Many people have weak core muscles and if you injure your backthese muscles tend to switch off and can remain switched off evenif the pain improves. In addition, most people do not know howto sit or lift. ey may have heard of “bend your knees and notyour back” but it’s not quite as simple as that.

Q What causes back pain?ere can be many potential sources of back pain, muscles canbecome strained, tight or knotted; the small facet joints along thespine can become locked out of place or subject to wear and tear;and / or the discs separating the bones in the spine can becometorn or bulge which can put pressure on the nerve roots formingpart of the sciatic nerve running down the back of the leg, this isthe most common cause of “sciatica”.

Q So what is the best way to diagnose back problems? My colleagues and I all try and stick to the good old fashionedprinciples of a thorough examination, testing reflexes, whole bodyposture (even the feet), testing the individual movements at eachlevel of the spine and looking for adverse tension and “trigger

points” with the spinal muscles. MRIscans are also very useful for looking inside the spine, and can givevaluable information on the health of the discs and joints of thespine. Sadly in this day and age of budget cuts and time pressureswithin the NHS this thorough approach is often neglected.

Q My friend has been told they need a spinal fusion operation, whatdoes that involve?ere are actually several types of "fusion" operation. Access tothe spine can either be from the front (ALIF), from the back(PLIF) or side (TLIF and XLIF) depending on the surgeonspreference and training. ey all involve removing a damaged discand replacing it with bone graft then fusing the two vertebralbones either side of the disc space together with the aid ofsurgical screws. ese types of operation are usually reserved forpatients with severely worn discs, or for patients with discogenicpain who have not responded to other treatments. In the case ofthe latter however most surgeons would advise exhausting alltreatment options before considering a fusion as there is a riskthat by fusing and preventing any movement between twosegments of the spine this can cause adjacent segments to sufferpremature wear and tear (adjacent level disease). Last year weinstalled an IDD computerised spinal distraction machine at ourChigwell clinic, we are one of seven clinics clinics in the UK tohave one of these machines, it is proving to be a real alternativefor many of our patients with degenerative discs, some of whomhave been able to cancel their planned surgery.

ESSEX IS CERTAINLY THE BESTPLACE FOR FASHION, STYLE AND CELEBRITIES.

“ere is only one thing in the world worsethan being talked about, and that is not being talked about.”Oscar WildeObserved, emulated, admired andcontroversial, everybody seems to be talkingabout Essex. Birds of a Feather started thetelevision interest in Chigwell and thenFootballers’ Wives filmed in Repton Park.More recently, e Only Way is Essex, award winning TV reality show whereEssex is personified as glamorous, excitingand the trend setter; especially with respectto tans and teeth. Allegedly, KateMiddleton watches TOWIE too. Perhapsthe inspiration behind her gleaming whitesmile is also TOWIE and Ash Parmar…

A great smile equals great teeth. Asmost of us know, only a minority are bornwith the perfect and brilliant smile, naturesometimes needs a helping hand, so when itcomes to aesthetic perfection and top

quality oral health, we have Ash Parmar atSmile Design by Ash.

Ash Parmar’s clients from TOWIEinclude: Georgina Dorsett, James ‘Arg’Argent and Nanny Pat.

GEORGINA DORSETT described herexperience as “Brilliant”. As for the practice:“Everyone is so nice. ey make you feel likeyou’re at home and they’re just very easy tospeak to. e atmosphere was comfortable andrelaxing. I was put at ease before anytreatment took place.”Being a celebrity means being selectiveabout the professionals behind any cosmeticor medical treatment. As an experiencedcosmetic dentist with an internationallyrespected reputation – Ash Parmar – is eDentist behind the smiles…“I am really happy with Ash as a dentist andwould recommend to everyone. I went to thepractice for general dentistry - they really knowexactly what they’re talking about. etreatment will help me to continue feeling goodabout myself with a healthy smile and teeth.

I’m also really excited about my work withLittlewoods.”

JAMES ‘ARG’ ARGENT So where didthe professional relationship start with Ashand TOWIE? From an initial conversationwith James ‘Arg’ Argent. He wanted toimprove his smile with a look that was “halfway from Brentwood to Hollywood”. AshParmar transformed his front four crookedand yellowish teeth to straight and white -veneer perfection. His looks have certainlyimproved and he is now more like James‘Arg’ Bond!

“I don’t stop smiling. I love them and am feeling more confident! is wasthe right and perfect time to have veneers because I’ve lost weight too. Ithink Ash is great and it was because I was so happy, that I recommendedthat Nanny Pat should go to Smile Design by Ash.”

NANNY PAT Having seen the results for Georgina and ‘Arg’, shewas encouraged to address her own dental problems. Her teethwere quite old and one tooth was missing. She needed to haveimpressions, an X-Ray and additional appointments to construct thenew cosmetic dentures. e procedure was filmed and recentlytelevised.

Speaking about this new patient, Ash commented: “We treat allpatients as if they’re a family member. We take care of them, listento their concerns and help them to relax and even enjoy thetreatments. Nanny Pat is a wonderful lady – she became ‘our’ Nanny Pat too.”“Although I was nervous, there was no pain. It all happened so quicklyand I’m absolutely over the moon. Ash was fantastic and the practice isamazing. ey made me feel very welcome… it’s more like a hotel than adental practice and now I feel like a million dollars.”Talking about her concerns, Nanny Pat added: “I was nervous as to how long it would take to get used to the dentures butI needn’t have worried. It was immediate. I’m so happy. My new book‘Penny Sweets and Cobbled Streets’ is published in August. My new smileis just in time for the book launch. ank you Ash.”

Speaking about his practice and patients, Ash Parmar commented:“All our patients are very special people. I established this practicewith the view to helping people. Dog walking Regular dog walkers are available forwhile you’re at work to break up your best friend’sday, or just an occasional walk when you haven’t gotthe time. ere is also the option of individual orsmall group walks where your dog can socialise, make friends and play.

Doggie Day Care is available if your pooch hasseparation anxiety or you have a day out planned.

Host family boarding with accredited host familiesis a great alternative to kennels. Your best friendstays in a loving family home with experienced dogowners, where they get lots of interaction and TLCas well as daily walks in the local nature reserve andEpping Forest.

Pet sitting & Cat care Animals at Home look afterall pets in their own home while their owners areaway. Not only cats and dogs but rabbits andhamsters to birds and fish.

Nicole and a small friendly team of fully insured, police checked carers provide a great alternative to acattery, caring for your cat in its own home, where itfeels safe, comfortable and can stick with its ownroutine.

Vet Dr. Tim Watson, BVM&S MRCVSrecommends Animals at Home cat-sitting servicesaying: “Cats are independent creatures and oftenchoose to spend time alone even when they don’thave to, so reduced social interactions are notnormally a problem for most cats, but they would beterribly distressing for dogs. In my opinion mostcats would remain more relaxed at home whenvisited twice daily to be played with and leftmentally challenging toys that rewarded them withsome food, instead of being shut into a smaller

environment with many other cats within sight andearshot which, owing to the very solitary nature ofthe species would be stressful”.

Pet Transportation Animals at Home cantransport your pet locally for a quick trip to the vetor anywhere throughout the UK, in speciallyadapted & equipped DEFRA-approved animalambulances.

Animals at Home are the preferred partnersupplying Pet taxi & Holiday care for CompanionCare, a nationwide chain of vets in Pets at Homestores. We are also the only Pet Care Companyrecommended by First Choice and omsonholidays.

A once in a lifetime opportunity……We have had the pleasure of marketing this wonderful character home on no less than three occasions over the past forty years or so. Therehas been fierce competition to acquire it on each occasion and each successive owners has enjoyed every moment of its fine accommodationand facilities and all have been responsible for maintaining its quality and character while adding their own mark in one way or another. Itwould be very brave of anyone to say that this is the perfect house. However in our view if not entirely perfect it comes desperately close tobeing so. What is certainly indisputable is that the position and location is certainly second to none and the spacious landscaped gardens area true delight. We personally know of several instances where families have kicked themselves for missing out on the opportunity ofpurchasing this excellent property. Once sold the opportunity of owning it again will not return for many, many years. Our advice is take theplunge now, as tomorrow will be too late and you will in time to come join the regretful many.
