Google Drive vs. MS Office

Small businesses and individuals who wanted a Spreadsheet, Presentation, and Word-processing package once had one option: Microsoft Office. But now, Google Docs is also gaining in popularity.

One key, underlying difference between Microsoft Office and Google Drive is that Microsoft office is produced by a for-profit company that uses some of its revenue for research and development. While Google Apps is classified as freeware. It’s a web-based office suite and part of Google Drive. Users can make and alter documents online, and the interface has collaborative properties, too. Tonic Systems developed a presentation program for Google Docs, incorporating Writely and Spreadsheets.

The business version of Drive, its word processing, spreadsheet and storage service, was first introduced under a different name in 2007. It now has revenue of over $1 billion a year, but current and former executives have complained that it is a low priority inside the company because Google makes so much more money from consumer advertising.

At Microsoft, on the other hand, Office is an extremely high priority because of how important it is to the company's financial health. The Motley Fool reports that Office accounted for 29% of all of Microsoft's revenue in the 2013 fiscal year. Because of that, it's vital for Microsoft to continue to own the Office market. And it does. Gartner says that by the end of the year 630 million business users will be using Office, with 50 million of them using a cloud-based version. And by 2022, it says, 1.2 billion business users will use Office, with 696 million of them using a cloud-based version.

Google Forms is a useful tool to help you plan events, send a survey, give students a quiz, or collect other information in an easy, streamlined way. A Google form can be connected to a Google spreadsheet. If a spreadsheet is linked to the form, responses will automatically be sent to the spreadsheet. Otherwise, users can view them on the “Summary of Responses” page accessible from the Responses menu.

You can create a form from your Drive or from any existing spreadsheet. Also you can Control your form’s page-to-page navigation. If you've divided your form into different pages by adding page breaks, you can specify which users see which pages depending on their answers to questions in your form — sort of like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” story.

When you've completed your form, you can send it to respondents via email or by sharing the form via social media. Just click the blue Send form button at the bottom of your form or at the top-right corner of your browser window. You can choose to share a link to your form, or you can add names, email addresses, and groups to the Add people field. Click the Done button, and the people you’ve added will receive an email directing them to your form.

After you’ve sent out your form, Google Forms will begin collecting the responses you receive. You'll be asked to choose how you’d like to store these responses. (Note: You can make this choice at any time while editing your form by clicking the choose response destination button in the toolbar.)

You can choose either to send responses to a spreadsheet, or you can store them only in Forms. If you choose to store them in a spreadsheet, you’ll be able to see individual responses as they come in. If you choose to store them in Forms, you’ll be able to see a summary of all the responses you’ve received, and you’ll also be able to download the responses as a CSV file.

You can also allow respondents to edit their responses by checking the box labeled “Allow responders” to edit responses after submitting, which you can find at the bottom of your form.

If you'd like to send respondents a form with some fields already filled in, Google Forms makes it easy.

While macros are currently not supported in Google Drive, you can extend the capabilities of Google Docs, Sheets, and Forms by adding custom menus, dialogs, and sidebars with Google Apps Script, a simple yet powerful scripting language based on JavaScript. In Google Sheets, Apps Script also lets you write custom spreadsheet functions. If you're familiar with Visual Basic for Applications in Excel, then you'll likely catch on to Apps Script quickly.

them inline.
