PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Kia ora whānau and friends Welcome to the December newsletter, and suddenly the year is all but done. Term four has flown by with school athletics sports, the APPA choir festival, our second noho marae at Te Puea, busy classes with integrated inquiry based on careers education, end of year testing and report writing, and the recommencement of whole school Rec sport. I would like to congratulate students who have achieved recognitions - our honours badge awardees, the class award winners who were recognised at our end of term assembly last Friday, and the Buchanan Award winners who will be announced in our final assembly on Thursday. Being awarded an Honours badge requires a high level of achievement and dedication over a long period of time. This year 29 students were awarded Honours badges, and their names will be printed on the board in our school hall to inspire future students. It is also appropriate that we acknowledge and congratulate the students who have been selected as school prefects for 2020. These students were voted for by their peers and staff, and the Head Girl and Boy, and their Deputies will be announced at the Buchanan Awards. I would like to thank our departing staff members, who are leaving us to take up roles outside of Auckland, for their contribution to our kura. In addition to their work in the classroom, Whaea Maggie Van Rensburg, Jordan Bartlett and Geoff Hamp have supported a wide range of activities - peer mediation, choir and band, table tennis and touch rugby - and all will be missed. Room 8 teacher Rene Loggie is changing roles, and will no longer be in the classroom. We are excited to announce that Rene will be our inaugural Learning Support Coordinator, a role set up by the government to support students with special education needs. Finally, it is with sadness and pride that we farewell our departing Year 8 students. You are an amazing group of young people who have achieved much, and we wish you every success in your journey to secondary school and beyond. Don’t forget us! Nga Mihi Tony Coughlan Principal

Have a Safe and

Happy Holiday

Royal Oak Intermediate School Board of Trustees Newsletter

Term 4, 2019

Hello and welcome to the ROI Board Newsletter. We are nearing the end of another busy year and it is hard to believe that it is only two weeks to Christmas. It has been a very busy and exciting year. Mr Coughlan and the teachers have provided an array of opportunities for our kids such as, AIMS, a Year 7 camp, choir, bands, an external art exhibition, robotics, chess club, to name but a few. It is fantastic that Mr Coughlan and the Leadership Team have built a great team of such dedicated and committed teachers. We have taken a few steps on the journey to being sustainable by signing up to be an Enviro School from next year. This is an exciting development that will provide significant learning opportunities for our children and will also make the world a better place. A steering group has been responsible for putting together a Maori Achievement Plan and a Pasifika Achievement Plan. We look forward to putting these into practice over the next year. We have recently had two resignations from the Board. I’d like to thank Tui Matelau for her two years’ of service to the school and Clive Sharpe for his four years’ of service for their enormous contribution to the school over that time. As a result, we have a vacancy for one or maybe two people on the Board. We will be selecting the new trustee(s) in the New Year. Please send an email to Mr Coughlan if you would like to be considered for this role. We welcome all applicants. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Coughlan, his leadership team and all of his staff for all of the hard work they have put in this year to make ROI a great place for our kids to learn. I’d also like to thank parents and whanau for their support of the school. I hope you all have a fantastic end to the year and a great summer holiday. George Woodward Board Chair.

Term 4 Sports round up

Kia ora staff, students and whanau. This term has proved to be another very successful term for Royal Oak

Intermediate.

Earlier on in the term, our school touch teams went to the Central Zone tournament. The boys were in a

tough league, placing 4th from 14 teams, the girls placed 2nd from 10 teams and the mixed team continued

their domination, placing 1st from 10 teams. The teams would like to thank Frankie, Malo and Mr Hamp for

their coaching.

From there, we held our annual school Athletics Day at Mt Smart Stadium. For the first time, we took a

group of distance runners to race the 1500m in the morning. Some standout runs by Austin Baxter and

Kizyra Thompson set the tone for the quality of performances to come during the day. Standout events of the

day were the year 8 boys 100m final, with Luke Parr taking out the title in a closely fought race. As well as

that, we had our house relay, which Grainger won. Mr Adams took out the teacher race and was heard

saying, ‘to win first place in the Royal Oak teacher race, is to win first place in the lottery of life.’ Mr Tibble

also wants me to mention that he beat Mr Coughlan and is the Alpha Britain.

We then took our team to the Central Zone day where Austin continued his fantastic efforts finishing an

impressive 5th in the 1500m final, and Daiana, Tina, Davina, Deepesh and Opiesi all made it to the Inter

Zone competition where they represented our school with pride.

Mr Puru also trained and took our Badminton team. Practices were held at lunchtimes and Tuesdays and

Thursdays after school. A lot of fun was had by all competitors on our competition day. A special mention to

our Yr 8 boys and girls doubles teams who placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Mr Puru is very proud of our

students’ skills gained over such a short period of time, with little or no experience in this dynamic sport. He

is looking forward to coaching them again next year!

Also, this term the girls' touch team of next-year-rugby-hopefuls were lucky to get a spot in the College

Rifles' touch rugby, 8 week tournament. Every Friday afternoon, the empowered female athletes travelled to

Remuera to take on one team in a half-hour show down under the strategic leadership of a Schaumkel

coaching staff.

Over the two months the girls experienced a wide spectrum of emotion: there were games that were arms

wrestles, games that were landslide wins and games that were humbling defeats. A massive thank you is

owed to Mr Coughlan and Montell for their time and efforts with this team.

We have also had a netball team entered in the Auckland Netball Summer League competition. The team of

year 7s were entered in a year 8 grade, winning every game but one. This Tuesday, the girls played in the

finals, and won a close game, being crowned champions. A very impressive effort for such a young team.

Finally, we had our lunchtime sport tournament, with the sport being Long Ball. So far, the tournament has

been close between the top 6 classes, with semi-finals being held today between rooms 3, 5, 10 and 11.

Buchanan classes have dominated the competition, with the highest number of wins.

Once again, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the parents and whanau for your efforts in

umpiring, coaching and transporting our students. Thanks to our staff who have coached and managed our

teams all year. Our students wouldn’t have these opportunities without your support. To our students,

congratulations on another successful year. We hope that you continue to involve yourselves in different

sport teams and competitions in the year to come, whether it be in year 8, or at high school. Thank you and

Merry Christmas.

Enviro Group

This term Royal Oak Intermediate Enviro leaders, school staff members and our school board chairman, George Woodward, met with Enviroschools Regional and Local Representatives, Marisa Pene and Hazel Meadows, to sign up officially as an Enviroschool. “Enviroschools is a nationwide programme in which early childhood centres and schools commit to a long-term sustainability journey, where tamariki/students connect with and explore the environment, then plan, design and take action in their local places in collaboration with their communities.”

Another exciting development is that we are also now a Garden to Table school. Look up these two organisations online if you have not heard of them before to learn about all the awesome work they do. We are hoping to start our veggie garden in the very near future using our generous grant from Ecomatters. If you would like to help us (adults or students) build or work in these gardens we would love to hear from you. Please contact either Mrs Campbell or Mrs Loggie. We have another project on the go recycling bottle caps to make a school mural. Please collect bottle caps and send these to Room 3. There will be a container in Room 3 to place these in. Mrs Loggie

Noho Marae In Week 4 of Term 4, a group of 35 ROI students and 10 adults spent 3 days and nights at Te Puea Marae in Mangere for our school’s second Noho Marae of the year. The Kaupapa of our Noho was about ‘Whanaungatanga’ and ‘Manaakitanga’. There were also eleven Year 6 Maori students from various Primary Schools that were invited to attend. This was so they could get to know some of their seniors for next year and familiarize themselves with some of our Kapa Haka songs. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and enjoyed by all those that attended. A big thank you to Te Hoia and Mr Webber who organised it, the parents/whanau who assisted at the Marae and our Tumuaki – Mr Coughlan for making it possible and allowing us the opportunity of a Noho Marae experience.

Such a sight I saw

A small hihi surging into thin air

Its brown smooth plumage shining in the bright sun

It made me refreshed as if I was standing under a waterfall

Such a sound I heard

A heap of leaves swaying from side to side

Its green colours shining as if there were stars in the night

It lifted my jaw as if I was looking at a colourful rainbow

Such a smell I smelt

A mash of ocean water and cool breeze soothing my skin

It took me to a relaxing place where the water was clear and blue

It relaxed my mind as if I was in a deep sleep

Such a smell I smelt

Such soft sand I felt

A pile of cream coloured sand, rough in my hand

It was gritty and soothing as I dug my hand into it

As cool as if I was standing at the edge of a cliff

Such soft sand I felt

Such a world comes in

Far world of the clear blue sky

Near world of the vibrant coloured trees

Through your eyes and your ears and your mouth and your brilliant brain

Such a world comes in

International Chef’s Day at

Royal Oak Intermediate

On Tuesday the 12th of November Royal Oak Intermediate had the privilege to be selected to celebrate the grand event- “International Chef’s Day” and to add to this grand day this Rm 10 was lucky to be part of the “International chef’s day”. The main chef for the day was- Chef John Keller. Chef Keller is a senior lecturer in Hospitality and food Department in AUT. He has been a chef for last more than 20 years. We had two students from the Culinary department to assist us. We also had someone from Nestle to help us create the amazing recipes for the day. Every student in Rm 10 wore chefs hats with their names on it. The whole class was grouped with about 3-4 people in 6 groups. The chefs helped the groups cook and measure and do all the technical work. We are very thankful to Mrs Kumar for always giving us opportunities to work under professional chefs. It is a great way of being involved as future chefs if there is someone who wished to choose this as one of their careers or jobs when they grow up. We were told that at the end of the session Chef John will judge the best platter presented for the day. We all worked very hard to show off our cooking skills to the chef but also our RERE values. Chef John helped each team by explaining the meals, the ingredients, the nutrition values in each ingredient so that we could understand and know what we’re doing. We made 4 different recipes- Banana Powered French Toast, Baked Rainbow Salad, Vegetable Show Stopper and Fantastic Broccoli Cup. All the four recipes had all different ingredients in them and they were packed with the essential nutrients needed for our body. There were fruits/vegetables/meat/dairy and nuts which means we were eating a healthy Eatwell plate and also 5+@day that everyone of us should be taking in us be healthy strong and fit. Finally, came the most important part of the day, the presenting of our dish. Room 10 was very creative and each group had a beautiful menu card on their table. The dish was presented by each group with an amazing finishing technique. Chef John went to each group and tasted the dish giving us feedback and feedforward so that the final judgement would be fair and just. The winner for the day was – “Fantastic Broccoli Cup”. Room 10 had great fun in celebrating the “International Chef’s Day and learning different techniques and skills from professional chefs.

Pah Homestead Trip On two consecutive Mondays, students from Royal Oak Intermediate went to the TSB Bank Wallace Art Centre Pah Homestead. At the homestead, we got to do a variety of activities including contemporary dancing, acting, circus activities, paper crafts and we even watched documentaries. My favourite activity was the circus-related one where we got to learn how to juggle, hula hoop and we even got to play with ribbons. The instructor even showed us a few of his acrobatic tricks like backflips, front rolls, side flips etc. Something else that I liked about the trip was the fact that we got cards from some of the instructors about how we can join different types of programmes in the holiday/weekends. Not only was it just a trip where we learned how to do certain things but it was also a place where we got to meet new people from other schools and we also got to hang out with our friends. Jaanvi Lingam Rm 16

Jellicoe

The Jellicoe Lights was extremely fun. Our school did face painting on people for free. As I walked around at the beginning of the evening, I glanced at the bottom of the hill and I saw some Royal Oak Intermediate kids sitting on chairs painting on other people’s faces. My friends and I wandered around the park looking at our massive community and all the stores at the bottom of the hill while also greeting people we recognized. When I had finally convinced my friend to get his face painted we made our way to the Royal Oak tables where we were painting the faces. Once we arrived I looked at the group and it was filled with familiar faces. My friend sat on a chair and one of my other friends painted his face as a bunny. Sometime later I decided I should get my face painted and I got my face painted as a bunny mixed with a … I don’t actually know what it was mixed with but it was epic, I had a moustache, a beard and some really weird eyebrows. Our other friend finally gave in to temptation and got his face painted. At around 8pm it was the Samoan group’s turn to perform, the whole audience watched them in awe as they did their

show, when they finished everyone applauded and the next group went on to the stage. At the end of the night the lights went up on the huge tree and fireworks exploded in the background, marking the start of the Christmas season and the beginning of summer. Wishing you and yours a safe and joyful holiday season.
