Missouri Compromise• A debate occurred regarding the

statehood of Missouri• Slavery was at stake• Missouri was not covered by the

Northwest Ordinance• An extra slave state would mean

more power for the South• Missouri Compromise• Missouri would be admitted as a

slave state• Maine would be cut from old

Massachusetts, thus keeping balance

• All new western lands north of 36o N would be free (north of Missouri’s southern border)

life• Baptists experience rapid growth
