Preface
More than 70 years ago, Minoru Shirota, a researcher at the Faculty of Medicine at Kyoto University, began investigating lactic acid bacteria. Having studied the work of Nobel Prize winner Eli Metchnikoff, Dr Shirota became convinced that a positive balance of good bacteria in the gut was the basis of a long and healthy life ? so convinced, that he devoted his whole life’s work to it.
Dr Shirota breakthrough came in 1930, when he succeeded in isolating a particular lactic acid bacterium, which had the ability to survive the harsh conditions of the stomach. This enabled it to reach the intestines alive and make a positive contribution to the balance of the gut flora. This bacterium was named Lactobacillus casei Shirota in his honor. Dr Shirota then developed a fermented milk drink, as a convenient way to introduce Lactobacillus casei Shirota to the gut. He named it 'Yakult'. To begin with, Dr Shirota made Yakult in his clinic and distributed it from there. But by 1955 demand had grown to such a point that he established the Yakult Honsha Co. Ltd in Tokyo.
And the rest is history. Dr Shirota lived to the ripe old age of 83. And Yakult has grown to become a world leader in probiotics. Around 25 million people drink Yakult every day. And we now operate in 31 countries, across five continents.

Introduction:-
Yakult (ヤクルト Yakuruto?) is a Japanese probiotic milk -like product made by fermenting a
mixture of skimmed milk with a special strain of the bacterium Lactobacillus casei “Shirota”.
It was created by Minoru Shirota who graduated from the Medical School of Kyoto University in
1930. In 1935, he started manufacturing and selling Yakult.
Official claims state that the name is derived from jahurto, an older form of jogurto,
the Esperanto word for "yogurt". Since then, Yakult has also introduced a line of beverages for
the Japanese market that contain Bifidobacterium breve bacteria, and has also used its lactobacilli
research to develop cosmetics.
More recently, the Yakult Honsha played a major role in developing the chemotherapy drug
irinotecan (Camptosar, CPT-11).

Philosophy and vision
Philosophy: "We contribute to the health and happiness of people around the world through
pursuit of excellence in life science in general and our research and experience in
microorganisms in particular"
Vision: "We believe in what we do. In our little bottle. In probiotics. We want to raise the
quality of life for people throughout the world."
Growth stage of Yakult
After its introduction in Japan and Taiwan, Yakult was first sold in Brazil in 1966, due to the
large number of Japanese immigrants in the country, before it was marketed elsewhere. Today,
(5)
Yakult is sold in 31 countries, although its bacteria cultures are provided from a mother strain
from Japan regardless of production location.
JOINT VENTURE IN INDIA
Yakult DANONE India (P) Ltd is a 50:50 JV between Yakult Honsha,
Japan and Groupe DANONE of France, both of which are global probiotic leaders. The JV was
formed in 2005 to manufacture and sell probiotic products in the Indian market. Yakult, a

Yakult Haryana plant
The company has been allotted eight acres of land in the Food Park of Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation. The unit has been set up with an investment of Rs 136 crore.
Yakult Honsha, which has 28 plants across the world, is focusing on overseas markets with an
aim to bring safe, probiotic products to the consumers. Recent markets for the company include
China, Malaysia, New Zealand and Austria
Facts of Yakult
Yakult is recommended for all age groups including children (1 year and above) and pregnant women. Yakult is a health drink which should be consumed everyday as a part of your daily diet.
Yakult contains sugar, so if you are diabetic, it is best to consult your doctor and find out if it is safe for you.
(7)
According to our studies, 65 ml of Yakult contains sufficient beneficial bacteria (6.5 billion LcS) to favorably impact the balance of the gut flora. However if you wish to consume more than a bottle, it is absolutely safe to do so.
You need to replenish the beneficial bacteria in your gut everyday to keep yourself healthy and free from harmful bacteria. Since most probiotic bacteria are flushed out in the stool, you need to consume them everyday
Yakult and yoghurt are both cultured dairy products made from milk fermented with live bacteria. Yakult is unique because it is made using Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain, not the strains of bacteria used in yoghurt. Yakult is not a substitute for milk /dahi and vice versa. The bacteria in Yakult (Lactobacillus casei strain shirota) are not found in any other food and hence it is recommended to include Yakult in your daily diet along with dahi and other dairy products
