One day Extension activity
on Awareness Programme on “Integrated Organic Farming for
Rural Development”
“Successful agriculture involves deploying a tested method to reduce input cost while
increasing yield. This is most important for small and marginal farmers. Reduction of pesticides
can benefit over the long run because a major portions of farmers money is spend on buying
these chemicals. The programme focused on educating farmers on the value of waste matter
being generated in both their fields and the availability of technologies to convert waste into
wealth.”
On 18-02-2020 at 10:00 am The PG & Research Department of Zoology and The Women
Empowerment cell of Kongunadu Arts and Science College, Coimbatore jointly organized a one
day extension activity on “Integrated Organic Farming for Rural Development” sponsored by
Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Coimbatore Chapter at Krishnamurthy Organic
farm, Pannimadai, Coimbatore with the Aim of Promoting the Concepts and outcomes of
Organic cultivation by integrated farming approach, with an overview about the food production
rate, it‟s aftermath and instability and conceptions levels in the countries. Student volunteers
from Department of Zoology and Women empowerment cell participated in this activity.
Dr. P. Kathireswari addressed the gathering and gave an awareness talk on the harmful
effects of chemical pesticides and importance of integrated organic farming in the Current
Scenario and focused on the Vermicomposting for sustainable agricultural practices.
Dr. P. Sumathi, Assitant Professor in English focused on the role of women in farming practices
and Dr.V.Meiyalagan and Dr. R.Venkatachalam, discussed the importance of biodiversity
conservation for sustainable farming practices. Mr. M. Krishnamurthy from Pannimadai village
of Perianaickenpalayam block is a successful farmer practicing integrated farming and he shares
his experiences with all and explained the different ways for money generation from integrated
farming. In his 4 acres of land he is practicing integrated farming of vermicomposting, fish,
beekeeping, crop and livestock. He established a mini-farm pond in his farm which helps to
support the breeding of fish. The water is nourished by dropping of poultry birds and vermiwash,
36
these nutrient enriched water has been (good source of biofertilizer and biopesticide effects) used
for his crops and azolla cultivation practises. Soil and water conservation activities undertaken in
his farm have helped the utilization of all water resources including rain water and soil fertility
management. His farm includes 56 species of tree varieties and live stocks such as vermin,
poultry, dairy, gotery, rabbitary and fisheries. The feed for the livestock is generated in the farm
itself and the excretory material of livestock is used for the production of biogas and the
produced slurry is used as biomanure for the crops. Also the dung is utilized for producing
organic manure, vermicompost by three different earthworm species Eudrilus eugeniae,
Perionyx excavatus, Eisenia fetida. He gets an income by selling the earthworms, vermicompost,
egg, coconut, coconut seedlings, crop products, and banana, honey and palm tree materials.
