ABSTRACT
This article especially focused on the changing experiences of Librarianships and it explains
the challenges posed by the emerging trends and technologies and to examine their
implications to academic librarianship. The need for e-information services to the users are
also growing and becoming very essential. The impact of web based e-learning and teaching
environment has influenced every facet of library and information services in academic
libraries and providing new opportunities and challenges to the library professional for
involvement in the knowledge based society including electronic and multimedia publishing,
Internet based-information services, global networking, web based digital resources etc.
In order to cope up with the new changing environment, Library and Information Centers
have made vibrant changes in its knowledge management procedures. The users have
experienced the changing trends from print resources to electronic resources for which the
libraries are facing the new challenges
Keywords: Information Technology, Academic Library Professional, Web Technology,
Technology Challenges, E-resources, E-learning environment
1. INTRODUCTION
An electronic resource is defined as a resource which requires computer access or any
electronic product that delivers a collection of data, be it full text data bases, electronic
journals, image collections or other multimedia products commercially made available with
an aim to being marketed.
Over the past few years, a number of techniques and related standards have been
developed which allow documents to be created and distributed in digital form. Hence to
cope with the present situation, libraries are shifting towards new media, namely electronic
resources for their collection developments that the demands of users are better fulfilled. The
e-resources on magnetic and optical media have a vast impact on the collections of university
libraries.
The functions of Libraries are essential in the integral component of higher education
system. Academic libraries in India are facing a lot of problems due to static budget and
exponential price hike of library collections. The library environment is currently undergoing
a rapid and dynamic revolution leading to new generation of libraries with the emphasis on e-
resources.
A lot of efforts have been made in past few years to overcome this problem of
financial crunch by resource sharing through consortia of university libraries.
UGC-INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) and AICTE INDEST (Indian National
Digital Library in Engineering Science and Technology) Consortium are two major initiatives
for university library users. These revolutionary steps are providing scholarly resources
including peer reviewed journals, databases, abstracts proceedings etc. These efforts must be
a boon to college library users which will definitely boost the level of higher education
system in our country.
2. OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this study are given below:
1. The main objective of this study is to analyze dependency of the teachers and research
scholars on e-resources, the perceived impact of the e-resources on their academic
efficiency and problems faced by them while using the e-resources.
2. To define and explain the concept of e-literacy and digital learning environment in academic
institutions which changes the role of library professional to the real situation.
3. To discuss about the various skills needed for the library professional to meet the present
online and digital needs of the user.
3.E-RESOURCES CHALLENGES
The management of digital resources has never been an easy process. The rapid
expansion of digital resources compounded with changing formats and sales models in the
short life of Web-based delivery systems has particularly made the management process more
complex. Further, from the very beginning, details relating to purchasing, licenses, access,
and usage have been kept in ad hoc systems built by in-house teams or by the individual
librarian needing to organize her workflow. It is hard to recall the days when digital resources
played only a minor role in library management discussions.
It is from these very humble beginnings that a fairly robust community of vendors and
librarians developed an entirely new type of library system the E-Resource Management
System (ERMS). There are now several vendors providing more or less integrated ERMS
services. However, nearly every library is dealing in its own way with the acquisition,
license, title, integration, and usage data information that accompany digital content.
4. CHANGING ROLES OF FUTURE ACADEMIC LIBRARY PROFESSIONAL
The changing role of library professional implies a set of updated skills needed for
facing the challenges created by the latest web technologies in the e-learning environment.
The emphasis will shift from technical skills in the library to communication, facilitation,
training and management skills. Although technology presents the librarian with ethical
challenges, the librarian is to be ready for the role of information professional in the
connected networked world and they have to acquire skills that can be contributed to success
in their new roles.
5. ROLE OF INFORMATION SCIENTISTS IN DIGITAL LIBRARIES AND
E-LITERACY
Librarians create powerful web sites such as the National Library of Medicine’s
PubMed database. They gather electronic information and create electronic pathfinders and
front-end search tools to help users for accessing the required information. Academic Library
professionals create online tutorials and instructional web pages to help patrons for
performing the best searches. Librarians have to change their role in the e-learning
environment by participating in e-learning experiments and becoming involved in
universities’ e-learning centers. They should invest in procuring e-learning tools and software
and should develop their e-learning and ICT skills.
6. PREVIOUS STUDIES
A number of relevant studies have been carried out on the use of e-resources by
teachers, students and research scholars of universities and research organizations. Seventy-
eight percent of the respondents feel that the use of the UGC-Infonet e-journals has created
high dependency value on their research work and they needed current article alert services
and electronic document supply services
Most of the survey indicates that the use of e-resources in academic institution is not
satisfactory and needs constant guidance/orientation to enhance their usage. E-journals are
becoming a basic need for the academic research scholars every day. In this study we find
that speedy publication and availability on the desktop are the key advantages that attract
research scholars. But Lack of training is a major de-motivating factor in the usage of
e-journals, so that needs to be improved
7. CONCLUSION
Librarians of this digital era, are in the position to change their role as arbitrary
information scientists/gatekeepers and to meet the challenges of the Internet, World Wide
Web, online access in the knowledge society. So they must enrich their knowledge with
special skills of the latest IT developments, to browse, access and retrieve a particular
information across the global networks and to organize and manage the information by
building digital libraries and by which they can provide quality e-information service to the
knowledge society. At the end we conclude that librarianship is turning towards IT for its
support and growth and library staff must develop is the ability to educate faculty members,
helping them to understand the power and applicability of e-resources.

ABSTRACT
Information and Communication Technology tools have made the great impact in
delivery of higher education that enabled the teachers and students in enhancing their
capabilities in teaching, learning and research practices. Hence, it is immense for the
universities and Higher Education Institutions to improve the ICT infrastructure and Higher
Education Institutions web tools to encourage and exploit the e-resources and communication
facilities among the stakeholders. Provision of smart classrooms is one such facilities that
enhance the qualities of teaching, learning as innovative and enjoyable. The Bharathidasan
University has excellent ICT infrastructure facilities with sophisticated systems and servers in
a structured network environment using the OFC and WI-FI facilities with 100 MBPS
