1 Newsletter No. 27 - Term 3Week 8 Thursday 3 September2015 From the Acting Principal……… India Trip Students and staff staying at our sister school in Bangalore, India are having a fabulous time. They are staying on site at Jain International Residential School, and experiencing school life, as well as having some fantastic day trips to see local events and attractions. School life begins early, with students rising at 5:30am and morning sport commencing at 6am each day. This can include hockey, basketball, swimming, soccer, tennis, golf, horse riding, cricket or even billiards. As you can see from the photos, classrooms are quite different, with individual desks all facing the front of the room, and each student standing to answer questions put to them by the teacher. Each school day has organised classes and sport activities right through until around 8pm at night, so our travellers are kept very busy! Our students have fit right into school life at JIRS, and are loving the experience with all their new classmates. As well as school life, during this week they have experienced some fantastic day trips. They attended a local celebration of Raksha Bandhan, a Hindu and Jain festival that celebrates the relationship of brothers and sisters, a water park and shopping centre in Bangalore, and travelled to the neighbouring city of Mysore where they toured through the King’s Palace. They are looking forward to experiencing another big festival at the school on Saturday before they begin their journey home.

Father’s Day Stall A big thank you to our Parents and Friends group, as well as all the extra volunteer parents that came along to help run our Father’s Day stall yesterday. These special opportunities for our children can’t happen without parents giving up their time to organise the event and help out on the day. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in the community, especially all the Dads, Granddads and Great Granddads, a very special Father’s Day for Sunday. RICHARD LAMBERT ACTING PRINCIPAL

CBL in 1/2N

Grade 1/2N have decided for our CBL challenge we are going to help meet the need of friendship in our school as well as meeting a need in an overseas school.

We are planning to make a friendship bus stop at Kalinda. We are hoping this will meet the need of children that can sometimes feel a bit bored or can’t find anyone to play with during lunchtimes or recess.

If you are lonely or bored you can go to the friendship bus stop, located outside grade 1/2N’s classroom, there will be a box of toys that we have made. Or if you want someone to play with, you can sit on the chair and someone passing by will know that you are waiting to be asked to join in a game.

We are going to paint the bus stop in beautiful bright colours and we are making a terrific sign for it also.

For our second action we are meeting a need in a Cambodian school. We learnt from Mr Allen, who is the director of Teachers Across Borders, that in Cambodia not many children got to go to school because they were very poor and had to stay home and work with their parents. We also learnt that children are not allowed to go outside to play when they are at school and there was not enough toilets and no drinking taps. The only water supply they have is from a well. We were surprised to learn that the children had no textas, pens or paper and they were not given any books to read until they were 11 years old.

So we want to help make a small difference to them. We have decided to make some coloured books to send over to Cambodia. These books had information about colours, senses, numbers, seasons, changes, shapes and environments. Mr Allen is going to take these books directly to some schools in Cambodia.

We hope you are all as excited about the projects as we are!

Written by Aaron, Yifei and Tayla on behalf of the children in 1/2N

GRADE 3-4 SCIENCE PROGRAM Continuing with our wonderful Science program in Grades 3 and 4, and also linking our learning to ‘needs and wants’ in CBL, students looked at the huge impact of deforestation, and the long-term effects for both mankind and our fellow animal species, in particular, the orangutan. Do our students have a voice? Can they make a positive change? Yes they can! By researching companies that use uncertified, unsustainable palm oil, they wrote postcards, urging them to source RSPO palm oil instead. They discovered that many companies have pledged to change by a certain year. What a proactive way to remind them! Go Grades 3 and 4!! http://mothernatured.com/2013/06/27/act-for-orangtuans-action-postcards-for-kids/

LEADERSHIP PROGRAM PROJECT

Dear Parents and Students,

As part of the Grade 6 Leadership Program, on Friday the 4th of September we are raising money for brain cancer. The money raised will go to the Carrie Bickmore Foundation, whose husband died from brain cancer. In order to raise money, we ask that all students wear a beanie on the day and bring a gold coin donation and wear their beanie for the whole day. If you don't have a beanie, you can wear a hat to show your support.

Thank you for your support of this important research. Yours sincerely Douglas, Jackson, Josh, Xavier, Luke

CANTEEN NEWS Footy Pie Day orders are now CLOSED. Thank you to all our volunteers who have offered to help out on the 16th September, I will follow up with an sms shortly. We would appreciate it when children come to the canteen to collect lunch order baskets or to purchase Icy Poles that they give us respect and use their MANNERS. We have noticed a decline in common courtesy and as our helpers are parents who give up their time to serve your children, a please and thank you would not go astray. Our supplier was unable to give us Chocolate Big M’s, so our stock is running low. We will replace it with strawberry if required. Soup Club – Our last Soup Club day will be next Thursday, 10

th September.

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 3 - Week 8 – 3rd September 2015

Program

Hello everyone and welcome to week 8 of OSHClub! Whoa! Time has absolutely flown by this term! I cannot believe that it’s already Spring! On a serious note, I regret to inform you all that Jeanette has had to leave our service for family reasons. It was a bit of a shock, however, we have all been working together to provide stability and continuity throughout the service. If any children or parents would like to send a farewell greeting to Jeanette I can make sure that they are passed on to her. Looking forward towards the end of Term 3 I need to remind children and parents that hats will once again be required for OSHClub in Term 4 AT ALL TIMES. Children will strictly not be allowed outside (apart from the shaded area directly in front of the doors) without a hat and sunscreen. If your child requires a specialised type of sunscreen please provide this in the child’s school bag or alternatively you may keep some here at the program (it will be labelled with the child’s name and used only for your child). We do provide generic Coles-brand “everyday sunscreen” to all children during Terms 1 and 4. I am also excited to announce that Good Shepherd Lutheran Primary School, which is located on Plymouth Road next door to Luther College, will be running their first OSHClub Holiday Program these coming school holidays. I will be one of the Coordinators working at this service and would sincerely love to see some of our regular children coming to attend this service with me! It is very easy to book into the holiday program through the online booking system. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me (via details below) or Good Shepherd Lutheran OSHClub on 0423 777 355. Kind Regards, Kalli Boag, Samantha Lawrence, Wendy Reid and Tayla Alderson.

KALINDA COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD

Teaching your child health eating habits - Part 2 “Eat your vegetables or you won’t get any dessert” This is another example that sets up healthy foods as something to be endured. It’s quite natural for kids to prefer sweet tasting foods but that doesn’t mean they can’t get to like, or at least tolerate, less sweet foods like vegetables. Only one in twenty Australians are eating enough vegetables so it does matter how you get your kids to eat them. By “bribing” your child to eat healthier foods with the promise of getting a less healthy food you are saying “It is awful, but something you have to do” AND you are also using less healthy food as a reward- both of which are unhelpful. Your child may not naturally love vegetables but you need to keep putting small amounts on their plate all the time and encourage them to try them and praising them when they do. Of course, it’s also really important the adults at the table are eating vegetables too- healthy role modelling matters! Lisa Renn, Accredited Practising Dietitian www.dietproofyourkids.com.au
