Pretest: Year 5

Welcome to this pretest for students in Year 5.

This test is designed to assess how well students have understood the contents of the mathematics

curriculum for Year 4.

Use the Teacher Overview as you instruct students to complete the test. Read questions aloud if

students are likely to have difficulties reading the text. This is not a test of reading ability!

Allow students to have a break if they are tired or restless. It is recommended that the test is given in

several parts.

Teacher instructions are provided for the number fact section (Q1-Q10) at the beginning of the

pretest.

Digital markbook

Use the accompanying markbook spreadsheet to record each student’s level of proficiency.

Enter a code of “Y” (proficient), “M” (developing) or “N” (not yet proficient) in each cell corresponding

to a student’s response to a question. The spreadsheet will automatically fill each cell with a colour.

This will provide a colour-coded visual summary of the entire class, showing each child’s

achievement and also the relative difficulty that students had with each question. You may like to

make a blank copy before first using the markbook so that it can be used more than once to track

students’ progress.
