What is augmented reality?

• An AR (Augmented Reality) system suplemented the real world with virtual (computer-generated) objects that appear to coexist in the same space as the real world.

• AR system to have the following properties:

• Combines real and virtual objects in a real environment;• Runs interactively, and real time; and • Registers (align) real and virtual objects with each other.

(Azume, BaillotBehringer, Feiner, Julier, MacIntyre 2001)

What is augmented reality?• Augmented reality is related to the concept of virtual

reality (VR). • AR is to bring an interactive experience, but aims to

supplement the real world, rather than creating an entirely artificial environment.

• Azume (1997), Azume et al. (2001) and Höller, Feiner (2004) define an AR system as one that combines real and computer-generated information in a real environment, interactively and in real time, and aligns virtual objects with physical ones.

Augmented Reality Definition• Augmented Reality (AR) is a concept that includes the perception of

and interaction with reality and virtual reality (Träskbäck 2004, p.13). All augmented realities share a common philosophy: Husserl and Gibson (1931) discussed how the artificial world interacts with the physical world of everyday human activities in order to enrich the experiences of perception and engagement.

• The power of AR is its ability to seamlessly combine, via virtual reality, the fantastical worlds of the imagination and the compelling aspects of reality, bringing players into physical proximity and helping them regain natural interactions (Bowlby 1983).

Historical Overview of Augmented Reality

• While the term augmented reality was coined in the early 1990’s, the first fully functional AR system dates back to the late 1960s, when Ivan Sutherland and colleagues (1968) built a mechanically tracked 3D see-through head worn display, through which the wearer could see computer-generated information mixed with physical objects, such as signs on a laboratory wall.

Page 9: IN140703 service support technologies 4.10.2016

Historical Overview of Augmented Reality

• For the next few decades much research was done on getting computers to generate graphical information, and the emerging field of interactive computer graphics began to flourish.

• Photorealistic computer-generated images became an area of research in the late 1970s and progress in tracking technology furthered the hopes to create the ultimate simulation machine.

Historical Overview of Augmented Reality

• The early 1980s movement of cyberpunk, created the visions of man-machine symbiosis. The entertainment industry jumped in with movies such as the Terminator series, which presented a specific rendition of what a computer annotated vision could look like.

Page 11: IN140703 service support technologies 4.10.2016

Historical Overview of Augmented Reality

• Caudell and Mizell (1992) worked at Boeing on simplifying the process of conveying wiring instructions for aircraft assembly to construction workers, and they referred to their proposed solution of overlaying a computer presented material on top of the real world as augmented reality.

• Since about the mid-1990s computing and tracking devices have become sufficiently powerful, and at the same time small enough, to support registered computer-generated graphical overlays in a dynamic mobile setting.

Augmented Reality Games

• ARQuake (Piekarski, Thomas 2002) game the player is situated the real world. His/Her has to run around shooting monsters and collecting items. The player position is tracked by marker-based computer vision and GPS tracking and for detecting the viewing orientation a digital compass is used. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNYfkxqiB6g

Augmented Reality Games• Human Pacman situated a game, which has little or no connection

to the space where it takes place. (Cheok et al. 2004) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y02x_bSJObI

• NetAttack (Lindt, Broll, 2004) represents a mixed indoor or outdoor AR game using GPS and inertial tacking for localizations. This “scavenger hunt”- like game is based on a story of an evil corporation trying to dominate the world through the use of a huge database containing the data of every human being. Time Warp makes specific use of certain locations which are of historical or cultural significance, hence it is more specifically related to the environment where it takes part. (Herbst et al. 2008)
