The cherry on topEveryone at Cherry Garth was delighted when their Cherry Pie won Best Sweet Pie at the Trust’s baking competition to celebrate British Pie Week.

Home manager Kelly was beside herself when they were announced as the winners at the event.

The judging panel included the Trust’s regional director Robin Comerford, development chef Jude Watts and local landlord from The Bricklayers Arms, Jordan Trumpet.

Residents and relatives from across our Buckinghamshire care homes enjoyed the event and tucked into the various pies once the judging was over.

Let’s face the music and danceWhen former respite resident Sandra (pictured above) wanted to do something special for theresidents at the home, she had the perfect idea.Knowing how much they all liked to watch dancing, she invited local performers from Dance Dynamic, to put on a show for the residents. The performance was amazing and everyone loved watching the different techniques and styles of movement.

Haggis anyone? To celebrate the Scottish national holiday of Burns Night, activity co-ordinator Janette (pictured above) encouraged residents to not only enjoy Scottish poetry by Robert Burns but also to taste the Scottish delicacy of haggis.

Janette, who is from Scotland, loved sharing the delights of her home country.

Love is in the air Valentine’s Day was the perfect opportunity to getcreative. A special arts and crafts session was arranged and Valerie (pictured above) created alove heart for her screen idol, Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp.

Flower arrangingVolunteer Morag held a very successful flower arranging session where residents got creative with a variety of different flowers and plants.

The group created beautiful centrepieces for dining tables around the home.

Jolly Trolley Everyone was delighted with the new Jolly Trolley that was taken on a tour of the home. The portable entertainment centre is used for sing-a-longs, reminiscence and relaxation.

Valentine’s Day A lovely morning was had by all as romantic poetry and songs were shared during an activity session to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Robert Burns’ poem ‘A Red, Red, Rose’ proved to be very popular and spearheaded discussions about relationships and loved ones.

The group also sang some beautiful songs including Dean Martin’s ‘Amore’ which got everyone in the spirit as they joined in on the classic love song.

Little surprises Residents were thrilled to spend time with local children from Millwood Nursery.

St David’s Day funSt David’s Day was celebrated with food and drink from Wales, including a beer called The Rev James which was first brewed in 1885.

Everyone also enjoyed eating traditional Welsh Cakes and looking at the bright daffodils.

Resident David also treated the group to a wonderful Welsh rendition of Land of My Fathers.

Reflections 2019 To celebrate National Poetry Day the Trust launched its very own poetry book.

Reflections 2019 has poems written by residents and colleagues across the Trust’s care homes and covers a wide range of topics.

Residents got together to read some of the poems and to look at the finished product.

Andrea (pictured above) was delighted to be asked to give her rendition of a poem about daffodils.

Red Nose Day Colleagues, residents and families all came together to raise funds for Red Nose Day.

Care worker Sapphire (pictured below) had the brilliant idea for colleagues in the home to wear their pyjamas to work for the day to help raise funds.

It was a great success and a fantastic £110 was raised.

Well done to everyone who was involved!

Talent showLent Rise House held their annual talent show with residents and team members all getting involved.

This year there were gallant efforts from everyone, but the overall winner was care worker Alibe (pictured above) who gave a fantastic rendition of the Amy Winehouse song, Valerie.

100th birthday celebrationResident Emily (pictured above) celebrated her 100th birthday in style with a special party and lots of treats including a delicious cake and a telegram from Her Majesty the Queen.

Anne’s Pantry The quiz is always a highlight of activity session ‘Anne’s Pantry’. Residents and family members love to take part while they enjoy the delicious cream cakes and cups of tea made by volunteers Anne and Julie.

Best of friendsGood friends Daphne and household assistant Lucinda enjoyed posing for an impromptu photo shoot.

Say cheese!

Special deliveryJoan (pictured above) loves doing her paper round each morning. She collects the papers from reception and then dutifully delivers them to residents on her floor.

Brilliant Bryony Resident Gwen (pictured above) was a key member of the panel for the interviews for the new activity co-ordinator. Gwen enjoyed posing questions to see if the candidates would be a good fit for the home.

Applicant Bryony was a hit and answered all of Gwen’s questions brilliantly.

Splendid singing Singer Emily Yarrow (pictured below) wowed residents with a selection of songs from the musicals.

The classic ‘Mambo’ was a real hit amongst the audience!

What’s in the news? Isabel (pictured above) loves getting her newspaper every day to keep up with the latest news.

It’s magic!Everyone enjoyed getting involved in a demonstration of an omiVista Mobii projector.

The portable device projects images and games onto any surface and encourages movement and reminiscence as it is fully interactive.

Spring flowersWith Spring in the air a painting session focussing on flowers was enjoyed by all.

Residents and family members took time to choose the perfect colour combinations to create their masterpieces and discussed their favourite flowers and colours from their own gardens when they lived at home.

Barbara (pictured below) had a great time and really enjoyed the activity session.

Smoothie operatorEve and Julie (pictured above) had a blast making healthy smoothies as part of Nutrition and Hydration Week.

The dynamic duo got stuck in and let their creative juices flow when they decided on the ingredients and flavour combinations.

The pair produced some very tasty fruity smoothies for everyone in the home to enjoy.

West Wycombe Choir Julie, daughter of resident Daphne (pictured below), surprised everyone when she revealed she sang with West Wycombe Choir.

She then arranged a special visit from the choir to entertain residents and team members.

Residents clapped and sang along to songs such as ‘She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain’ and even did all the actions.

Thank you to the brilliant choir for visiting!

FlowerlandA group of residents thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Flowerland in Bourne End.

Everyone enjoyed exploring the garden centre and looking at the wonderful display of flowers, as well as the many different fish in their tanks.

A visit to the café for tea and cakes was the perfect end to a lovely afternoon out.

Perfect pancakes Residents had a flipping good time on Pancake Day. During an activity session they made over 40 delicious pancakes to be enjoyed by all.

Lovely lavender Lavender sachets were lovingly created during an arts and crafts session run by activity co-ordinator Danielle. Residents thoroughly enjoyed the heavenly scent of lavender, known for its relaxing elements.

A walk in the parkColleagues Annie and Gill (pictured above) took residents to Higginson Park to enjoy a lovely warm afternoon.

The group all enjoyed an ice cream while taking in the sights and sounds of the park.

Balloon badminton Activity co-ordinator Samantha got creative when the weather wasn’t great and brought the outdoors in by hosting a balloon badminton tournament for residents to enjoy.

School days Regular visits from local schools are very popular and when children from The Downley School came to see everyone, a great time was had by all.

Doreen (pictured above) and Muriel (pictured below) had lovely chats with the children as they discussed their schoolwork.

Run rabbit, run rabbit, run, run, run...Care workers Madelaine and Lynn arranged for two mini rabbits to move into the care home, much to the delight of everyone.

Residents and members of the team loved spending time cuddling and stroking the fluffy new additions.

sCRUFTs The Trust’s dog show sCRUFTs was back by popular demand and a number of relatives and colleagues brought in their pets to participate in the dog show.

The trophy for Best in Show went to chocolate labrador Biscuit owned by household assistant, Sharon. The award was given in honour of former resident, Sylvia Marshall and it was awarded to Biscuit by Sylvia’s best friend at the home, Angie.

Prizes were donated by local pet store Jollyes who gave several treats and a tennis ball for each of our four legged friends.

Part of the communityIn the last issue I set a competition for the best poem received for inclusion in Reflections 2019, a book full of wonderful poems written by residents from all our care homes.

I am delighted to announce the winner is Carey Lodge for their poem ‘Games We Played’. A special prize is on its way to you!

It really is great to see the local communities coming into our homes and bringing so much joy to everyone, along with their expertise.

Knitting enthusiasts, craft aficionados, musicians, schools, colleges and so many more have visited. I personally loved shopping at the vintage and craft fairs held in our homes.

We have also had many special invitations from the various town Mayors to join local events, wereally are becoming a huge part of our local communities.

Don’t forget to let us know if you have a lifelong wish or dream you would like fulfilled. Details can be found opposite. You never know, you may be one of the lucky ones…

“Time, ladies and gentlemen!”Every other Sunday at The Heights nursing home assistant manager Jackie (pictured left) opens the Downley Donkey in true ‘Bet Lynch from Corrie’ style and serves up sherry, wine and beer.

The residents really enjoy the social occasion of having a drink and a chat at the on-site bar.
