WELCOME TO THE 2014 FREMANTLE FESTIVAL!We’re getting set to write another great chapter in

the Fremantle story with the 109th Fremantle Festival

featuring all the things that make our city special.

The opening Sunday is a case-in-point, contrasting the

pageantry and tradition of the Blessing of the Fleet,

with runaway success of the new Fremantle Esplanade

Youth Plaza.

The highly successful Norfolk Lanes Youth Festival

will this year move to the youth plaza with music,

skateboarding and parkour workshops. While the

Blessing of the Fleet winds its way through to Fishing

Boat Harbour, wrapping up with a spectacular

fi reworks display. A fantastic day for the whole family

to welcome back summer!

We are also delighted this year to welcome the

Japanese Film Festival which will be showcasing the

best in contemporary Japanese fi lm.

Other highlights of the 2014 festival are the ever-

growing theatre program, which includes the “Round

the Corner Theatre Program” with shows at suburban

venues including the North Fremantle Bowling Club

and Progress Hall in Hilton. Stroll down to your local

venue and catch some amazing shows.

Local businesses are again jumping on board and

this year a great selection of new venues will be used

by artists to create dynamic events. Stop by the

Oddfellow at the Norfolk Hotel for a pop-up jazz cellar

(page 8) or if you like a laugh why not check out the

cabaret and comedy weekend at Creatures Nextdoor

(page 17) or the comedy fi lm festival. If photography

fl oats your boat then stop by the Maritime Museum

for workshops and exhibitions. (page 20). Prefer the

classics? The University of Notre Dame Australia will

once again be fi lling their courtyards and spaces with

classical music encounters.

These events and many, many more run alongside

festival favourites: Wardarnji, Children’s Fiesta, Jazz in

the Park, Black Box Theatre and everyone’s favourite,

the Street Parade.

It’s shaping up to be another great festival. So time to

sit down at your favourite Freo café and start planning

what will make up your festival experience this year….

there is plenty to choose from!

Born in Australia to a Chinese-Malaysian father and an Iranian mother has infl uenced Shameem’s distinctive eclectic approach to music. TO ALL THE (BOYS) I’VE LOVED BEFOREPerth artist Sioux Tempestt explores screen deities in a collection of contemporary works.

Inspired by a fascination for much admired celluloid celebrities and the connection we have for these everyday people who have been catapulted into stardom. Scrutinising them on screen and in tabloids fabricates the notion that we know them intimately when in reality we know them not at all. Yet somehow these mere mortals enter our homes and infl uence our lives as we identify with and idolise them. We perceive them largely as portrayed by the media, quick to judge and slow to empathise.
