Growth

Pastor Chris Enstad

It’s a new year and my gym is once again full (so I’ve heard) as yet another set of resolutions

have been made by us to our clothes, our loved ones and ourselves!

The fl ipping of the calendar from one year to the next is an obvious time for us to pause and

refl ect on the year just past and to resolve to make changes as we continue on our life’s

journey into the year ahead.

The church calendar fl ipped to a new year way back in November as we began Advent and

then celebrated Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. We remember, and rehearse, that blessed event every year because

it marks the time when God intervened within time and history to heal the breach between creation and creator once and

for all.

On the Christian church calendar January 6 marks another very important day. 12 days after Christmas the Church

celebrates Epiphany. This is the day that we mark the revelation of Jesus to the Gentiles; in this case represented by the

Magi who followed the North Star to fi nd Jesus swaddled and lying in a manger. The expansion of God’s covenant from

Israel to the rest of the world began with this visit from strangers from the East. That covenant has since grown and

expanded to include you and me. The season of Epiphany continues until the Sunday before Ash Wednesday which is

known as Transfi guration Sunday.

In earlier times the Church used the occasion of Epiphany to mark the date of Easter on people’s calendars since that

date moves every year according to the cycle of the moon. Before digital watches and Google it was the Church that

announced Easter to the people!

So what does all of this church calendar talk have to do with you and with me?

Brothers and sisters, our lives are directed by so much that it is often hard for us to keep our lives straight. In my

household we have three calendars: one for me, one for Carrie, and one for all four of us! The season of our lives we are

in now I tend to call the season of “hurry” as we run from one obligation to the next… and I’m told that life gets even

faster from here on out!

The liturgical calendar, meaning the calendar of the church year from Advent through Pentecost, is a chance for us to

conform our busy lives to God’s calendar… the rhythm of church life is not meant to be dictatorial but it is an attempt to

help us, as God’s children, to set our lives and our rhythms to the beat of a different drum.

By pausing to give thanks for Jesus’ message to the Gentiles we remember that God’s kingdom is not exclusionary but

expansionist! Likewise, when we gathered around the manger in church, and in our hearts, we remembered that God

comes to us as in the form of a little, infant boy… this not the model we would necessarily choose for the savior of the

world but thankfully salvation has not been left up to us… God has taken care of all of that.

And now, having set our spiritual watches to “God Standard Time” let us go forth this day, and this year, to share that

Good News with the whole world! God is with us, all of us, for each of us.

See you at church,

~ Pastor Chris Enstad

Call Committee News

The following is a Call Committee update for you. We have

wholeheartedly recommended to the Board of Directors that a

Letter of Call be extended to Pastor Joe Brosious to be on our staff

as an Associate Pastor. We have truly appreciated his ministry with

us as an Interim Pastor, and we are enthused and excited about the

possibility of him being with us for a longer period of time.

Our Committee went through the typical process, but on a fast-track

basis where we met weekly and did “homework” between

meetings. The process included an orientation meeting with

Bishop Froiland, prayer and devotions to know God’s guidance,

preparing and submitting a Ministry Site Profi le, receiving very

helpful comments from congregation members, reviewing the

Rostered Leader profi le for Pastor Joe, interviewing him, and

checking references. After considering what is right for Good

Shepherd at this time, and how Pastor Joe can support us in our

spiritual journey and his interest in doing that, we made our

recommendation as noted above.

We believe Pastor Joe will be well received by our congregation

and staff, and that he will effectively bring us the Word and

Sacraments, spiritual guidance, a focus on outreach, and serve

effectively with our ministry team for leadership on our Vision

and Mission.

Therefore, we brought forth our recommendation to the Church

Board to vote on recommending Pastor Joe to the congregation for

a vote. The vote from the Board was unanimous, with the next step

being for the congregation to vote on the Letter of Call at the

Annual Meeting on January 29. Upon congregational approval,

Pastor Joe will have time to decide on accepting the call. We pray

and hope that with God’s guidance, he will accept our invitation

and serve our congregation with joy and satisfaction.

Thank you for your encouragement and sharing your experiences

with Pastor Joe. They were very helpful to our committee. We look

forward to supporting him in his ministry efforts.

With God’s blessings,

Thank you to everyone who has generously donated snacks

for students at Orchard Ridge. We have received both large

and small donations. The teachers are appreciative of all the

snacks they receive. One member of Good Shepherd ordered

her generous choice of snacks online and had the package

delivered to Good Shepherd. How clever is that?!

A few suggested snacks might be: fruit bars, animal

crackers, Mott’s fruit snacks, pretzels, graham crackers,

Nilla crackers. Monetary donations are also accepted. If

using a check, make it out to Good Shepherd Church and

add OREsnacks to the memo line.

Service

Good Shepherd and Samaritan Counseling Center

Good Shepherd has provided offi ce space for Samaritan

Counseling Center for the past two and a half years at the

Madison Campus. This is an update on how the space has

worked out with a licensed professional onsite part-time.

Good Shepherd pastoral and other staff have made good

use of Linda Pettersen, LCSW, the professional clinical

social worker at the main campus. She has seen both GS

members as well as persons made known to them needing

counseling outside of our church community. These

referrals result in excellent, experienced care. Samaritan is

a State of WI licensed mental health clinic so most people

can use their health insurance to pay for services or make

use of a sliding fee scale.

The offi ce hours are by appointment only and Ms. Pettersen

is available Tuesday through Thursday. Please call the main

Samaritan Offi ce at 663-0763 ext. 100 to talk with support

staff about an appointment at the GS location, insurance, and

fees. Or, leave a message with Linda at 663-0763 ext. 380

and she will call you back. You may also speak with one of

Good Shepherd’s pastoral staff about a referral to Linda.

Here are some of Ms. Pettersen’s areas of expertise: Couples

counseling including non-traditional couples, pre-marriage

counseling, marriage enrichment and divorce prevention,

separation and divorce adjustment, emotional and physical

abuse, physical and emotional disabilities, blended families

(step parenting), mood disorders (anxiety/depression), and

families with adult children with mental illness.

Pastoral CareAt this is a time of transition in our church,

we are making every effort to minister to our

members in need. If you, a family member,

or friend are admitted to a hospital,

especially University Hospital, please

contact the church offi ce. Due to patient

confi dentiality, it is diffi cult to obtain timely

information. We want to be available to visit

you in the hospital, pray with you, and help

in any way.

Along with pastoral care, we know that we

are not reaching out to families with new

babies in our congregation. Your church

family at Good Shepherd wants to share

your joy and encourage you at this exciting

point in your spiritual journey as parents.

We also want to give you information about

making plans for your child to be baptized.

Please help us during this time of change

and new Pastors and keep us informed by

calling 271-6633 and leave a message, speak

to Judy or Robyn, or e-mail one of the

pastors or parish nurse.

Wigglers in WORSHIP

Is your house feeling a little empty after the Christmas decorations are away and celebrating feels over? Consider celebrating your Wiggler’s Baptism along with Jesus’ Baptism on Jan. 7 and 8. Light your child’s Baptism candle, talk about what happened on the day they were baptized and l ook at photos from the Baptism. Read the story of Jesus’ Baptism in the Spark Story Bible or Matthew 3:13-17 or Mark 1:9-13 or Luke 3:21-22.

Or consider leaving your Christmas stars and a string of Christmas lights out for the month of January. Epiphany is celebrated on Jan. 6 but the season of Epiphany is celebrated in the church until Feb 19. Epiphany celebrates the arrival of the wise men who followed the Christmas star to fi nd Jesus. Read about their journey in in the Spark Story Bible or Matthew 2. Consider making stars with your Wiggler or talking about Jesus being the Light of the World. What does your Baptism candle have to do with Epiphany?

Souper Bowl XVI is Coming Soon

“What a great story!” “So much fun!” “My heart was moved over and over.” These comments were heard in the lobby following presentations of the Christmas Pageant at our Verona Campus on December 11.

Coming soon: “My Father’s House” on April 2, 2017. Written by our own Cassie Kohrs, it will premiere at the Verona Campus. Everybody is invited to the season kick-off meeting on Sunday, January 8 (12:00 noon at Verona Campus). Rehearsals begin January 15. No experience required. Whether you enjoy being in the spotlight or operating behind the scenes, there is always room for more in Drama Ministry. Check out our Web Page at gslcwi.com (Click on Ministries, then on Drama).

AHPP at Good Shepherd

and in the Community Alan Halverson

Parson’s Project (AHPP) is excited to

announce that we will again be performing

a Valentine’s Day 80’s concert on February

18, 2017. For this event, we are overjoyed

to be part of helping raise money for Feed

My Starving Children (FMSC). For

several years, Good Shepherd has been

very involved with this organization and

it is our great joy to share our gifts to help

provide for those in need. Our hope is

that an organization like FMSC will have

broader appeal

and allow us to

attract

individuals in

the community

to come to the

concert

and learn more

about Good

Shepherd.

Calling all ding-a-lings!

Do you enjoy camaraderie, laughter, and

making pretty music? Good Shepherd

Handbell Ministry is looking for ringers!

Gospbells practice on Tuesdays and play

fourth Sundays.

Choral Bells

practice on Thurs.

and play second

Sundays. A

rudimentary

ability to read

music is helpful.

No experience is

necessary.

Reduce my carbon footprint Here’s a suggestion from the Creation Keepers for one of your New Year’s resolutions: Reduce my carbon footprint.

If you are interested in fi nding out how much CO² you, personally, contribute to the atmosphere, there is an easy way to do it. Go to the website CO2gether (https://www.co2gether.org/my_co2/index.htm). CO2gether is a collaborative eff ort between Madison Gas & Electric, 1000 Friends of Wisconsin, and the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Sustain-ability and the Global Environment.

As the website states:“… we have worked together to provide web tools to help you: • learn about climate change, • calculate your carbon footprint • learn how to reduce that carbon footprint, • track and journal your eff orts, • discuss these topics and your eff orts with others, • measure the impact you can have working with others in this area.”

The website is geared toward people in South Central Wisconsin and provides a wealth of information on climate change globally and here in Wisconsin, helps you determine your carbon footprint by means of a quick survey, and then gives you step-by-step suggestions on how to get it done by focusing on 1) your Energy Practices, 2) your Renewable Energy Choices, 3) your Transportation Practices, and 4) more Life Choices.

It’s an easy and fun way to work toward reducing your carbon footprint. Give it a try in the New Year!
