Post Diwali season had seen the outbreak of severe air pollution in Delhi, the capital city of India. People of Delhi had to inhale copious amounts of pollutants, with air quality being in 'severe' zone, but emergency measures enforced to arrest peak levels of pollution, stayed out of sight. With a reading of 402, the National Air Quality Index of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) declared Delhi's air as "severe", a condition that affects healthy people and seriously impacts those suffering from diseases. All of we are aware of what is air pollution and its causes. According to The World Health Organization air pollution is “the presence of materials in the air in such concentration which is harmful to man and his environment.” In fact, air pollution is the occurrence or addition of foreign particles, gasses, and other pollutants into the air which has an adverse effect on human beings, animals, vegetation, buildings, etc. The major causes of air pollution are : Combustion of fossil fuels in industries, automobiles, aircraft, railways, thermal plants, agricultural burning, metallurgical processing, Chemical industries including pesticides, fertilizers, weedicides, fungicides, Processing industries like cotton textiles, wheat flour mills, asbestos, welding, stone crushing, gem grinding etc. Natural air pollutants include pollen, spores, marsh gas, volcanic gasses and synthesis of harmful chemicals by electric storms and solar flares. The major cause of pollution in the urban areas is automobiles which inefficiently burn petroleum, releases 75% of the noise and 80% of air pollutants. The concentration of industries in one area is another major cause of air pollution. The causes are known and the solutions too are known but the absence of proper actions to control pollution causes the citizens suffer. Every citizen in every city should contribute to check pollution by using public transport as much as possible, conserving energy by finding out the methods of using other renewable sources of energy, understand the concept of reuse, recycle and applying it, using energy efficient devices and moreover keeping their immediate surrounding clean. The role of educated people is much larger as they can be good role models for society. The reason I have chosen this topic for editorial is it’s a recent disastrous phenomenon happened and the role of engineers to provide a clean atmosphere will be counted. Right from designing the devices to purify air and water to devices using alternate sources of energy or clean energy, engineers can do wonders to help the society in curbing global warming. Know your environment, its problems and solve. Need for good engineering research and its applications are a timely demand. We are seeing a series of innovations and experiments aimed at alternate and unconventional options to reduce pollutants. Air Pollution is one of the larger mirrors of man’s follies and a challenge we need to overcome to see a tomorrow.

ACHIEVEMENTS

BLDE Engineering College faculty members published high impact publication in Springer journal

The research team of BLDEA’s College of Engineering and Technology has carried out a joint research

collaboration with BLDE University and Jadavpur University, Kolkata on ground water fluoride toxicities

in Indi Taluka of Vijayapura district. This work entitled “Groundwater fluoride contamination and its

possible health implications in Indi taluk of Vijayapura District (Karnataka State), India “ is published in

Springer journal ‘Environmental Geochemistry and Health’ (IF.2.23) August 2016 issue online.

This is one of the most important research publications on ground water fluoride contamination and public

health issue highlighted from Indian subcontinent recently. The report clearly shows a high fluoride

concentration from recommended values ( < 1.0 mg/L) in bore wells water from villages of Indi Taluka

(55%) with 73% dental fluorosis cases among children besides skeletal fluorosis. The first time in the

world a report linked to fluorosis and painful changes in skin was also reported.

The report is also unique as most probably the first time in India a scientific study had been done on

fluoride concentrations in groundwater of same areas over a period of 15-year interval by same organization

(BLDE Association) research group. It is also to be noted that the unpublished data of year 2000 of BLDE

College of Engineering & Technology has now been accepted as a cited reference as BLDEA(2000) under

Springer group of publication which is probably rarely occurs in the world of publication domain. The

research team was lead by Prof.Kusal Das and his expert medical team members of Shri B.M.Patil Medical

College, Vijayapur. Prof.Dipankar Chakraborti of School of Environmental Studies, Jadavpur

University,Kolkata was the external expert investigator in the team. From BLDEA’s College of Engineering

Shri Naveen Desai of Civil Engineering Department acted as Co-ordinator. Prof. Dr.Swastika Das,

Smt.Anuradaha Tankshali, Shri Kailash Chadchan and Smt. Asha Arwikar were the other investigators of

this project.

Prof. Adimurthy M of Automobile Engineering Department has published a research paper titled

“Local distribution of wall static pressure and heat transfer on smooth flat plate impinged by a slot

air jet” in Springer Journal ‘Heat and Mass Transfer’ (IF: 1.044).

LIBRARY ACTIVITIES

Invited Talk on “Expectation of the Industry by Job Aspirants” was conducted for 3rd & 5th Semester students on 15-09-2016. Mr. Niyaz Ahmed Qureshi, Alumni of our MCA Department & Research

Assistant, ICF OLSON Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore was the speaker.

A National Workshop on ‘E-Resources for Academic Excellence and Research’ was jointly organized

by Department of Electrical Engineering, IEEE student Society and Library and Information Centre on 27th Oct, 2016 in collaboration with VTU Library consortium. The workshop was technically

sponsored by IEEE, Bangalore.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

The objectives of this workshop was:-

1. To prepare students to undertake robotic projects.

2. To make students learn and utilize sensors and actuators for real world applications.

3. To make students enable to deduce applications of electronics in robotics and IoT.

4. To make students enable to develop hobby, mini and major projects to achieve academic excellence.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

A three day workshop for 7th semester students “Campus to Construction Industry” was organized by the Civil Engg

department & Association of Consulting Civil Engineers, Bijapur on 21th to 23rd Oct 2016. Sixty students participated in

the workshop. Prof. A. S. Bagi & Prof. M Q. Patel were the Coordinators of the workshop.

“Arduino 1o1” workshop was conducted at Jain AGMIT, Jhamakhandi by Prof.R.M.Math, Prof.R.M.Hatti,

Prof.V.C.Sajjanar and Prof.A.S.Yaragal for 3rd and 5th semester students of E&C on 29/09/2016.Students were

introduced to using Arduino board, sensors and applications leading to fruitful innovative robotic projects.

Parents meet for the academic year 2016-2017 was organized on 24th Sept 2016. As many as 97 parents participated in the meeting & interacted with the staff. Mrs. S.S.Angadi, HOD, Civil Dept highlighted the departmental activities to the parents, Mrs. A.S. Arwikar spoke about the counselling process adopted in the department. Mr. A A. Momin spoke about

the new CBCS system which will be adopted to the new batch students.

Prof. S. J. Nagathan was felicitated by Association of Consulting Civil Engineers on Engineer’s Day, 15th Sept 2016.

On account of birthday of Dr. S. Radahakrishnan, Teachers Day was celebrated by the students of Electrical and Electronics Engg. Department on

05/09/2016.

Fresher’s day was arranged by final year and pre-final year students on 26/09/2016 in Rangamandir, Vijayapura to welcome the III sem students. Mr. S.M.Nuchhi was the Chief Guest of the function. Dr. (Smt) S.R.Savanur, HoD, Presided over the function and briefed about the department.

A Guest Lecturer was arranged by Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering B.L.D.E.A’s

CET, Vijayapur on 10/09/2016 .Guest lecture was arranged is to provide platform for career building to

final year students. The resource person was Mr. Sagar. B. Halabhavi, Associate professor, GIT

Belagavi.

It has been a great opportunity for me to study in this college. Most of us are from different places

following different cultures. It is a great experience to be here. I was very excited about Engineering

and now it's like part of dream come true. My teachers helped me to be focused with objective of my

life. We all are so lucky to have such a wonderful teaching Staff that keep showering their blessings,

knowledge and support for extracurricular activities so that we can learn all the possible technical

and non technical aspects. I feel so much free here. The environment is so friendly and supportive.

Though it was my first semester this college has given me bunches of memories. I'm excited for my

upcoming days in the college.

For every student professional education is the most important phase of life. I have chosen

engineering which will give new turn to my life. I came to college with lots of expectations,

curiosity and excitement of meeting new friends and lecturers. My journey started with a warm

welcome by my lecturers and seniors. Our lecturers are highly efficient and supportive and

friendly. They advise us not only in the academics but also in building personality. Here I met my

very old friends who proved the world is round and many of us have same interests which were

unknown as small school children. I am sure now that I have joined the best Institution. With

all sweet memories I am eagerly waiting to enter into the next semester of my engineering course.
