From the Interim Pastor…
wo Interim/Transitional items of importance for
October…. On Sunday, October 6, you will be
asked to participate in the “U.S. Congregational
Life Survey” during worship. October 6 is a
Communion Sunday. The order of worship will be
tailored to allow for the survey without running beyond
our normal worship time. Each worshipper (member,
affiliate member, guest, or “friend of Chapel”) will be
invited and encouraged to participate.
The value of this survey will be to help Session, the
Pastor Nominating Committee, the Transition Team, and the membership-at-
large better understand the make-up of our worshipping congregation. It
allows for total personal privacy. Though the office of the U.S.
Congregational Life Survey is housed in the Presbyterian Church (USA)
General Assembly building in Louisville, it has been used by 52
denominations in over 2,000 congregations.
The Transition Team conducted a study of Chapel’s demographic area
discerning valuable recent information about Fort Myers Beach and the
surrounding localities—average age, education, household size, marriage,
religious preferences, income, life-style patterns…. The October 6 survey will
provide Chapel with resources to help us better understand ourselves, our
strengths, and stimulate our efforts to create a positive future. It will provide
us with a profile to help check Chapel’s vitality for attracting new members,
involvement in the community, and the congregation’s faith development.
The second item of importance regarding Chapel’s interim/transition time is
a church-wide study of Diana Butler Bass’s Christianity for the Rest of Us.
The book is an outgrowth of fifty healthy, growing mainline congregations
included in a Lilly Foundation Study and the ten common characteristics
discovered within these congregations. Congregations and pastors are
notorious for grabbing fads that may have little to do with their specific
congregation in the hopes that doing so will bring about physical growth with
little regard for spiritual and emotional growth.

A Word From Your Parish Nurse ( continued)
In some of these cases, patients were admitted for caffeine
toxicity, which can result in cardiac arrhythmia and even
death. Sugar is the second-most harmful substance you'll
find in energy drinks. Manufacturers tend to load these
beverages with the sweet stuff. Studies have shown that
intake of intensely sweet drinks lights up the dopamine
centers of the brain in some individuals the same way
cocaine does—and in sensitive people may even surpass
the cocaine reward. Excess sugar consumption over time can lead to chronic
and potentially deadly conditions including obesity and diabetes. While
imbibing the occasional energy drink without alcohol is not likely to harm an
otherwise healthy person, making a regular habit of it can be dangerous.

This study/discussion group will be known as Solomon’s Porch because of the
1st century Temple’s porch used as a place of teaching, discussion, and healing.
We will meet each Wednesday at 4:00pm in a circle of chairs near the
Communion Table in the sanctuary. New paperback books are available for $12
(checks made out to Chapel by the Sea).
The PNC is meeting each Thursday at 4:30pm. Laura Miller is the committee’s
moderator. Richard Geib is the acting secretary. Committee members include
Dottie Callahan, Tim Cherry, Miffie Greer, Louis Monaco, Carol Phillips, Joyce
Riggleman, and Wanda Prater as an alternate. The Rev. Dr. Tim Halverson and
Elder Max Furbringer are Committee on Ministries’ PNC support and guides.
Allow the group privacy in their work while providing them with your strong
encouragement and prayerful support.

.A Word From Your Parish Nurse
The Dangers of Energy Drinks
Energy drinks are not new and in fact have been
around for over 100 years—in the late 1800s,
Coca-Cola was introduced as an "energy booster." Its
original recipe combined the stimulants cocaine and
caffeine in the form of coca leaves and kola nut
extracts. That mix was changed in 1904, removing
active cocaine from the mix. In coming years,
additional brands of energy boosters with various
stimulants would come and go.
Fast forward to the late 1980s and the launch of Red Bull in Europe. Red Bull is
credited by some with gearing up the modern energy craze, hitting the United
States in 1997 with a unique marketing strategy that targeted sleep-deprived and
party-hearty university students and offered them free products to fuel their
college parties. It wasn't long before vodka became the favored Red Bull mixer.
Young adults may have started the trend of mixing energy drinks with liquor to
get a buzz that keeps going all night, but the fad has gone mainstream, with bars
and restaurants offering up their own versions of extremely sweet, highly
caffeinated elixirs. According to health experts, some of these fizzy, boozy
mixes should come with a warning label. It goes without saying that guzzling
caffeine-spiked beverages for hours will keep you tossing and turning when you
should be getting all-important restorative sleep. In the short term, that
caffeine-fueled lack of sleep can leave you groggy and puffy-eyed, and over
time sleep deprivation can cause serious side effects, including mood disorders.
In fact, too much caffeine alone may put you at risk for conditions like anxiety,
headache and depression. In addition, studies show that consumption of energy
drinks is associated with an increase in risky behaviors, such as binge drinking,
which can lead to hospitalization and even death, especially when high levels of
caffeine are consumed with alcohol. Because energy drink cocktails include
both a stimulant (caffeine) and a depressant (alcohol), the concoction hits the
heart hard, as the muscle struggles to regulate the chemicals' effects. Statistics
from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration indicate
there were more than 20,000 emergency room visits in 2011 related to energy
drink consumption.

Please help spread the word! This year's concert series is set up and ready to
go, as you can see from the previous pages. All that is needed is your help in
spreading the word to family, friends, and colleagues. In order to do this, flyers
are available to be posted on bulletin boards wherever you believe that music
lovers will see them. You may pick up flyers from the Narthex or from Silver
Hall. In order to avoid duplication, please sign the sheet that will be with the
flyers with your name and the location in which you are going to post the
flyers. That way, others who have the same idea may see that the location is
already covered. If you wish flyers (hard copy or by email) you may also call

Concert Series on Fort Myers Beach
January 23 – Joybell - Kristine Stout, Handbell Soloist You
may remember Ms. Stout playing here in our 2010 concert series and
we are delighted to host her entertaining concert once again. "Joybell"
is a handbell ministry by Kristine Stout, handbell soloist. She plays 3
octaves (37 bells) of English Handbells all by herself, accompanies
herself using a programable digital keyboard, and writes and
choreographs every beautiful arrangement in her program.
Very visually pleasing, Kristine combines traditional handbell
weaving techniques with a special form of ballet. She will amaze and
delight you with her artistry and talent. Thursday at 7 pm.

entertaining and totally attractive evening of chamber
music. William Dawson is composing a new work in
high Dawsonian style for the occasion: "River Suite"
based on tunes "Shenandoah", "Suwanee River",
"Shall we gather by the River" & "Down by the River
to Pray" a toe-tapping traditional old Appalachian folksy song.
Thursday at 7 pm.
