I would like to tell you about some dogs recently rescued by OBG whose stories have really touched my heart. The first dog is named Joe Cocker. In late June, a Good Samaritan from Mississippi contacted OBG with quite a story to tell. She was at home one day when a woman ran her doorbell and told her there was a dog in a nearby

lake and the woman’s husband could not get the dog out. The Good Samaritan ran to the lake and all she could see was floating fur and the poor dog’s head. Miraculously, she was able to get ahold of the dog and pull him out of the water and over the sea wall into the yard. Poor Joe collapsed as soon as he got on the ground. didn’t know if the dog was a boy or a girl until they could shave him. Until then, he was so hairy and matted that no one could tell. Joe Cocker is a very loving dog and has charmed everyone who has met him. Unfortunately, the Good Samaritan’s dogs were not as smitten with Joe so she reached out to OBG to take him. It is OBG’s honor and privilege to be able to continue the good work started by this Good Samaritan. We have now learned Joe Cocker is heartworm positive. The cost of his treatment wil l be $1000. Can you help us give Joe Cocker and dogs like Joe the life saving heartworm treatment they need by making a tax- deductible donation to OBG? As of press time, OBG has two more dogs diagnosed with heartworm on their way to OBG so your donations will also help Toby and Carolina. Another amazing dog recently rescued by OBG is Rufus. Rufus was tossed out the window of moving vehicle in North Carolina. Fortunately for him, another Good Samaritan was able to come to his immediate aide. Rufus is about five years old, but he already has cataracts. We hope to be able to have them removed by OBG’s eye specialist. This w il l cost OBG $2000, but this poor dog deserves a break after what happened to him, don’t you agree? As of press time, we were still waiting to find out if he will need any orthopedic care from the injuries sustained from being tossed out of the window like garbage. If he does need additional medical treatment, this will be OBG’s first priority. Then we will address any other medical needs, including his cataracts. Your donation to OBG will help us get Rufus and other dogs the medical care they need, especially when your donation will be doubled.

5

The last dog I want to tell you about is Marshall . Marshall is a gorgeous Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a side of Beagle. He is 2 ½ years old and weighs 22 pounds. Marshall came to OBG from North Carolina with a spinal fracture. The good news is the prognosis for Marshall is excellent. He will have to wear a harness for life and not a normal collar,

6

but otherwise he should be able to live a long and full life. Marshall also has some anxiety issues following his trauma, but we have a dedicated foster mom who is working with him to build his trust and realize he will not be abandoned again. Your tax-deductible donation will allow OBG to continue to help Marshall and dogs like Marshall during their recovery process.

7

OBG’s first priority is always to try and help dogs in the Washington, DC area, but you may have noticed OBG is taking a lot of dogs from the southern states. In fact, out of the 126 lives saved by OBG during the first six months of 2015, 20 dogs were from North Carolina, six dogs were from South Carolina, five dogs were from Georgia, one was from Tennessee, one was from Kentucky, one was from Arkansas, one was from Florida and one was from West Virginia. Thirty-nine dogs came from Virginia, often hours away in Southern Virginia. Fifty-nine dogs were owner turn-ins throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southern states. There are so many dogs from the South that need to be rescued and sadly, there just aren’t enough rescue workers in these states to fill that need. Often times, rescue workers

8

in these states focus on ways they can help groups like OBG by retrieving dogs from shelters and owners surrendering their dogs and transporting the dogs up north. OBG is only able to save dogs like Marshall, Rufus and Joe Cocker because of the help of out-of-state rescuer workers and

9

transports. Even with this assistance, these out-of-state intakes can take hours of volunteer help PER DOG and can often cost OBG hundreds of dollars in transport costs. Your tax-deductible donation will help us pay for the long distance transport and associated costs of future dogs coming to OBG from out of state. The focus of this letter is obviously to raise much-needed funds so that OBG can save more lives, but there are other ways that you can help, too. Do you like to shop online? Perhaps you will soon be doing back-to-school shopping or if you are like me, you just like an excuse to shop! Whatever the reason for your online shopping, please consider using Amazon Smile or IGive to shop. It won’t cost you any more money and OBG will receive money for every purchase made! We are currently receiving $400 - $500 a month from the Amazon Smile program alone, but I know we could easily double that amount if every one of our supporters that shop online signed up for Amazon

Since my April 2015 President’s Letter, two of the four dogs I highlighted – Bart (top right) and Sandman (left with his new brother Confetti) – have been adopted; and Brittany (bottom left) has a permanent foster. It is with great sadness that I tell you that our sweet senior Cecelia (bottom right) passed away. She was surrounded by her foster Mom and siblings. Rest in peace, Cecelia. Thanks to YOUR donations, Sandman had his surgery to remove is leg due to cancer – and he is cancer free. Bart had his cataract surgery and can see now. Both boys went to wonderful forever homes! Brittany’s ear conditions have improved with treatment and she found a wonderful long-term foster. They even won a recent look-alike contest. Smile (it’s free) and designated OBG. Then every time you log into Amazon Smile to shop, a portion of your purchase automatically goes to OBG. Don’t forget to ask friends and family to do so too! Last, but most certainly not least, have you ever considered volunteering for OBG? As always, we need foster homes for dogs like Rufus, Joe Cocker, Marshall and others, but there are many other ways to volunteer too. We need people who are interested in helping make intake arrangements for dogs, transport new intakes and foster dogs to doctor’s appointments, help plan fundraisers or help work at the event, work at home doing various administrative tasks, help at adoption shows and many more things. It truly does take a village to save the lives of homeless dogs! If you are interested in volunteering and would like more information on ways you can help, feel free to email me at [email protected]. As always, I want to extend my thank you to each and every one of you for all that you do to help OBG save lives and for all your tax-deductible donations, large and small. Your Friend in Rescue,

Teresa Butler OBG President
