Term 4 Week 8 3 December 2020

Message from the Principal

It sure has been an amazing fortnight with many large-scale school events taking place. The students have

enjoyed some fabulous experiences and there are still some big-ticket events to close out the year. Once again, I

must acknowledge the fabulous teaching and administration staff at SSPS; without whom many fabulous

additional school activities wouldn’t be possible. Overnight camps, excursions, performing arts and sports groups

and STEAM opportunities continue to be highlights of the school experience our students enjoy thanks to the

innovation and dedication of our staff. This will be our last full newsletter for the term with an end of year message

to come home in the last fortnight.

White Ribbon Day 2020 Friday November 20 was White Ribbon Day and as a White Ribbon school we wanted to highlight the importance

of Respectful Relationships. Students all wore white to symbolise the importance of today and bring about

awareness to the issue of violence against men and women.

Classes viewed our Film By The Sea movie from last year, ‘Through different eyes’. They also watched a clip of

Sans Souci students and staff sharing their thoughts on the issues, taking the oath and talking about a positive

role model in their lives. Both of these videos explore how we should all treat each other with respect and

kindness. Students shared their thoughts in class discussions, their writing and in their artworks.

Thank you to all the staff and students who took part in the making of the video and for all sharing such powerful

and positive messages.

Stand up, Speak out!

Ms Graham White Ribbon Coordinator White Ribbon Day is day about no harm, respect, kindness and speaking up about violence against women.

White Ribbon Day is important for people to know genders don’t matter, it is full of respect and kindness. I like to

demonstrate acts of kindness by helping someone if they fall. I would tell the teacher, help them up, get them a

Band-Aid.

My Mum is the most important person in my life. She is strong, kind, helpful, beautiful, selfless and lots of other

great things. My Mum is so strong, she helps me throughout life and if I feel sad she always cheers me up and

puts a smile on my face.

My hopes in the future are for everyone to show respect for women. We should treat each other equally, genders

don’t matter. Remember, STAND UP, SPEAK OUT!!

White Ribbon Day is a day that we treat girls and women with respect by not harming them. White Ribbon Day is

important because we are respecting all the girls and women around us and out there in the world. I show kind-

ness by treating others with respect, never bullying, showing love and definitely never causing harm.

My Mum, sister and two aunties are important to me because they love me, they’re always there for me, they

make me laugh and many more reasons.

My hope for the future is that violence stops against women and everyone is equal no matter what happens!

Performing Ensemble

The Performing Ensemble has been rehearsing this term to prepare a recording of the National anthem as well as one other tune for each of the presentation day sessions next week. The ensemble sounded fabulous this morning and I'm sure everyone will enjoy listening to them next week. I would like to acknowledge conductor Geoff and band coordinators Mrs Watson and Mrs Kennedy for supporting the ensemble throughout the year.

Staff Recognised with Network wards

Yesterday Craig Smith, Director Educational Leadership Kogarah Network visited the school to present two individ-

ual awards: to Kath Dillon for celebrate her outstanding career as a classroom teacher and specialist art teacher,

starting at Sans Souci PS in 1981 and to Falamina Najem who has worked at SSPS for 11 years as a respected

and talented Learning Support Officer. Mr Smith also presented the school with a certificate of appreciation recog-

nising the outstanding contribution of all staff members to support the SSPS students and community throughout

the challenge of 2020.

Year 6 Bathurst Camp

In week 6 the Year 6 students went to Bathurst to have a school camp. On the way they stopped at Scenic World

and Treetops Adventure Park to ride the Crazy Rider. We stayed for 3 days and 2 nights. On the first day we set-

tled into our cabins and had a constellation tour. On the second day we went to Hill End. We were lucky enough to

experience what it was like on the goldfields by having the chance to pan for gold. Some students found gold and

others weren’t as lucky. After gold panning we had lunch and then went to Bald Hill mines and had the chance to

climb up a mine. On the last day of camp, we did some activities that people on the goldfields would do including

making damper and mud bricks. We headed back for school late on Wednesday afternoon.

Cool Controllers

This year, eight students were involved in a gifted and talented program. The program was coordinated by Mrs Watson. The students involved were Rhianna K, Lily C, Hunter, Jai, Archie, Lachlan, Zach and Spyro. It was called the Cool Controller Competition and this was the first year our school has participated. It was based on design thinking strategies to enhance the air quality of primary schools in New South Wales. After hours of hard work we managed to come in the top 12 of 66 schools who participated. We designed a machine titled, “Canopy Air,” which was a cross between an air conditioning system, fan and a ventilation system. We all thought this was a new ex-perience that was enlightening to participate in and it enhanced our intelligence by teaching us new design think-ing strategies. We enjoyed working as a team to create our new invention. By Lily C and Rhianna K 6K.

Year 2 Swimming Scheme

Congratulations to our Year 2 students who participated in the intensive swimming program at Bexley Aquatic Centre daily over the past 2 weeks. All children are to be commended on their progress and improved confi-dence in the pool. As we come into warmer weather, it is a timely reminder to stay safe in and around water!

Semester 2 Student reports

In Semester 1 this year teachers provided families with a modified student report due to the period of disrupted

learning in Term 1 and 2. This semester student reports will revert to the original format and families will have

online access to the reports on Friday next week. With the majority of families now registered for access to the

Sentral Parent Portal, parents will again be able to access a copy of their child’s Semester 2 School Report online.

The school will no longer provide a printed copy of student reports unless families specifically request a printed

copy. Semester 2 reports will be available on the Sentral Parent Portal on Friday December 11. Shortly, a note will

be sent home to enable families to request a printed copy of their child’s report. I can say that I am extremely

proud of the achievements of all students throughout 2020 despite the disruptions earlier in the year. I would also

like to acknowledge the professionalism, time and effort of all teachers and administration staff who have contribut-

ed to the reporting process in some way.

Presentation Day

Next Wednesday December 9 the school will host four separate stage-based Presentation Day ceremonies. This

special event is an opportunity to congratulate and acknowledge students for their effort and achievement through-

out 2020. In an exciting finale to the Stage 3 session, 2021 Student Leadership teams will also be announced.

The school has conducted a COVID Safe risk assessment of the site and unfortunately, due to constraints around

floor space in our hall, we are not able to invite parents and carers of award winners to this year’s presentation day

sessions. After careful planning, the School Leadership Team has modified this year’s format in order to meet

COVID Safe compliance, as recommended by the NSW Department of Education.

In advance I would like to acknowledge the enormous effort and coordination of Mrs Brandtman, teachers and ad-

ministration staff in preparing for this important school event and thank Mrs Reid for compiling a digital record of all

award winners to be shared with families on the day.

Dance Australia Online Eisteddfod

During Term 2 and Term 3 all dance groups have been practicing their dance routines each week. Each group

should be so proud of their achievements and the effort they put in each week during their dance lessons. Congrat-

ulations to all our dance students who won Gold or Silver. The performances were fantastic and every student

should be very proud of themselves! A big thank you to Ms Alecia and Ms Ysabel for their hard work and amazing

choreography. All dance lessons will continue until Week 8, Friday 4th December and auditions for 2021 Dance

groups will be announced next year in Term 1.

Library News

Many thanks to families that have made $10 donations to our library through the POP payment method. Your child should have selected and borrowed their "donated" book by now. It would be greatly appreciated if these books could be returned to school by Friday of this week (December 4). Weekly borrowing for 2020 has now finished for the year as we are currently getting ready for stock take. Please return any books currently on loan by Friday this week (December 4). With the long summer holiday period coming up, don't forget to join your local council Library. It's free and there are lots of fun holiday events planned over the break! Thank you and Happy Reading Mrs Holmes -Teacher/Librarian

Canteen Closure

The school canteen will be closed on Tuesday December 8 due to the year 6 BBQ fundraiser. The final day

for canteen operation this year will be Friday December 11.

The canteen will be closed from December 16-18. Please ensure that your child brings sufficient lunch and

fruit break as required on the final three days of school.

Quality Learning K-6 Stage 3 EV3 Robotics program. 5TW were investigating how to program and code the EV3 robots to navigate a maze they built. They had to learn how to code the EV3 robot to make 90 degree turns, move forwards, backwards make it rotate and control the speed.

Design thinking task- design an icebreaker using the EV3 robots Today we had to make an icebreaker using EV3 robots. We had to draw designs and then try and build them. Our task was to try and get through the Ice without getting stuck, like a real icebreaker. We had to video our EV 3 designs and create a vlog about our trials and if they worked or if they did not. SSPS canteen meets the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy The Menu Check Service has assessed our canteen’s application against the food and drink criteria of the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy. The school has been informed that our school canteen is meeting the requirements of the Strategy. By having a healthy canteen, we are supporting the health and wellbeing of our stu-dents. To acknowledge this achievement our school has been awarded the Great Choice Certificate and badge that informs the broader school community of our commitment to a healthy school canteen. Congratula-tions to our canteen managers and other members of the school com-munity who have played a role in this achievement.
