The past is a foreign country; they do things differentlythere— Leslie Poles Hartley. Actually I never read thenovel this prescient quote is attributed to, The Go-Between(1953). But with the recent death of Harold Pinter, whowrote the screenplay for the 1971 film adaptation, I’vebeen sifting through fragments of language that resonateacross time. Seems like a lot of people want to go backin time. Who would have thought we would be debat-ing the merits of The New Deal nearly a hundred yearsafter the The Great Depression. (Whose idea was it tocall the Depression “Great” by the way?)

As inconvenient truths go, unfortunately when all ofthe economic stimulus plans and protectionist plans ofthe 1930s failed to turn around the most significantworldwide economic depression to date, the worldwidewar economy — yeah, that one, World War Two,rather conveniently “happened” in 1939 and all of asudden everyone was back at work. Sure do hopethat today’s economic stimulus plans and protectionistplans don’t fail; you never know what can happen.Just a thought.

Then again, lots of people want to live in the future;they’re saving other peoples’ money for a rainy day or anuclear winter, whichever comes first.What’s your pleasure;hot or cold? In any case, money is not money unless youspend it. Like blood, it has to circulate or it’s useless.The more you save, the more you lose. Where’s that“irrational exuberance” when we really need it?

Yes, the world is changing; no, nothing’s changed at all.The past is a foreign country — How does that goagain?

The West Coast:An Overview of the California Art Scene

Most states have a varied cultural texture, a sub-tle social gradation that works its way east to

west, north to south. But the vast landscape ofCalifornia often feels less like a contiguous culturethan a distinct collection of self-contained worlds.Each of the state’s three major cities is animated byits own political, social and aesthetic philosophiesand defined by a particular historical identity. Art,and the corresponding gallery culture, reflect thisreality, making each city home to its own uniquescene.

San Diego, at the southernmost tip of the state,has a reputation for being the country’s mosttemperate city. Surrounded by lush naturalbeauty, the larger metropolitan area stretchesnorth along the Pacific, encompassing the cityand a string of affluent, coastal communities.Like the weather, the social climate tends to begenial — marked by a steadiness that borderson staid. Taste in San Diego is largely conser-vative, a fact which galleries, the most successfulof which have been active for more than twentyyears, must constantly contend. The city’s twomain gallery districts are located in Little Italy,a self-styled neighborhood district west of down-town and La Jolla, a wealthy resort community tothe north.

Little Italy’s reputation as an up-and-coming artdistrict has been cemented in recent years by astring of young, progressive gallerists who haveset up shop amid the area’s coffee shops andcafes. Many of the galleries, like Subtext — asmall space with an adjoining bookstore on Ket-tner Boulevard — place an emphasis on urbancontemporary art and design; courting an audi-ence that may have otherwise migrated north toL.A. Around the corner on India Street, the three-year old Luis de Jesus Seminal Projects has gaineda reputation for its experimental exhibition pro-gram that juxtaposes local work with emergingmulti-media artists from around the world. Thoughpopular with the young and hip, the area hasstruggled to initiate a dialogue with San Diego’ssmall, somewhat timid community of collectors, themajority of which is concentrated in the north.“San Diego is a highly segregated place,” onegallerist explains. “We don’t have the kind of as-similation, the cultural collision, that happens inother cities and you feel that as a gallery. Collec-tors play it very safe.” The one space in the areathat seems to have struck a successful balance be-tween mid-career contemporary and blue-chip isScott White Contemporary Art, tucked away onWest Kalima Street.

A ten-mile drive on the I-5 North leads to La Jollawhere most of San Diego’s best known galleriesare located. The downtown area is small andposh, with galleries interspersed between luxurystorefronts and high-end boutiques. TasendeGallery, located on a scenic stretch of ProspectStreet, has been in La Jolla since 1979 when itmoved operations from Acapulco, Mexico. Witha heavy emphasis on sculpture, the gallery hasmounted exhibitions of recognizable work byartists like Giacomo Manzu, Isamu Noguci andMark di Suvero. A few blocks away on Girard,Joseph Bellows Gallery maintains three exhibitionsrooms of contemporary photography and vintageprints from iconic names like Ansel Adams andIrving Penn. And through a hard-to-find back alleyentrance, Quint Gallery occupies a quiet, subter-

ranean space on Drury Lane. Of the city’s estab-lished gallerists, Mark Quint is perhaps the mostadventurous and seems particularly adept at nav-igating the space between emerging artists andwell-known work.

Two hours away in Los Angeles, intrepid galleryowners are in no short supply. L.A. has long beenconsidered the Western analogue of New YorkCity. But it’s only within the past several years thatthe L.A. gallery scene has really come into itsown, developing both the vibrancy and gravitas toact as a true cultural counterbalance to the East.For the past two decades, a cadre of enterprisinggallerists has steadily staked its claim in areasthroughout the city and carved the Los Angelessprawl into a series of distinct, navigable districts.

Chinatown, a 24-square block area to the north ofdowntown, was the scene of a major culturalrenaissance in the nineties. The area had been ineconomic free fall for about a decade when gal-leries, drawn to the neighborhood by low rentsand compact, urban charm, began to settle in.The recently shuttered Black Dragon Society wasamong the first exhibition spaces to open onChinatown’s Chung King Road in 1998. Run byan artist collective and operated only sporadically,Black Dragon had devoted many of its shows tostudent work and was instrumental in establishingthe unrefined “art school” vibe that still permeatesparts of the area. Traditional contemporary gal-ler ies soon fol lowed and within two years,Chinatown became a thriving gallery district thatbalanced a unique mix of the commercial and theconceptual. China Art Objects, another ChungKing Road pioneer, was an early supporter ofemerging L.A. artists Pae White and Ruby Neri

and for the past decade has focused heavily oncultivating local talent. Other contemporaryspaces dotting the easily traversed length ofChung King include The Happy Lion, The Box,Kathryn Brennan Gallery (formerly Sister) andSabina Lee. Steps away on Cottage Home Street,Steve Hanson (of China Art Objects), KathrynBrennan and Thomas Solomon (son of the lateNew York dealer Holly Solomon) have opened thecollaborative Cottage Home, a 4,000 square-footexhibition space in a former Chinese theater.

At the time, Tim Blumand Jeff Poe (of the eponymous Blum & Poe) werelooking to relocate the well-known gallery from itsSanta Monica location to a larger space. Theyeventually settled on a sparse, industrialized stripin Culver City, an area located east of Venice onthe Santa Monica freeway. When it openedamong the warehouses and tire yards on a run-down stretch of La Cienega Boulevard, Blum &Poe was the only established gallery for miles. Buttypifying the will and enterprising spirit of the city’sgallerists, Kim Light (of Lightbox) followed Blum &Poe into the cultural wilderness, immediatelytrailed by LAXART, Susanne Vielmetter and LizbethOliveria (now closed). The settlement quickly ex-panded into an empire and today, over thirty gal-leries are operating in Culver City. Seriouscollectors frequent the district, mingling with scen-esters and casual spectators, to view work thatranges from the famous — Takashi Murakami andSam Durant — to the infamous — Bruce LaBruceand Dash Snow. The Culver City Art District, asit’s now known, has quickly gained an interna-

tional reputation for high-caliber work and is hometo some of L.A.’s best known galleries including:Roberts and Tilton, Peres Projects, LA Contempo-rary, Cherry and Martin and Sandroni.Rey.David Kordansky has just relocated to the areafrom Chinatown while Susanne Vielmetter re-cently expanded into a larger space on Wash-ington Boulevard. And in October, Blum & Poemoved across the street from their original 5,000square-foot space to a 21,000 square-foot com-plex that includes three galleries and a private res-idence for visiting artists.

A short drive west from Culver City leads to thetown of Santa Monica. The longtime home ofDavid Hockey, the area is awash in the intensehues of cerulean and sand made famous by hispaintings. As an arts district, the area is bestknown for Bergamot Station, an industrial complexhousing two dozen galleries and the Santa MonicaMuseum of Art. Bergamot was a trolley stationuntil 1954 when it became a warehouse districtand the site of a celery packing plant. It was laterpurchased by the City of Santa Monica which en-listed Wayne Blank, co-owner of ShoshanaWayne gallery, to develop the space for artisticuse. The resulting complex, which opened in1994, is a pedestrian-friendly grouping of gal-leries and shops that attracts hundreds of thou-sands of visitors a year. Those visiting BergamotStation can expect a healthy mix of emerging andmid-career work from notable galleries likeRosamund Felsen, where the focus is exposingyoung, regional artists, and Robert Berman, anearly exhibiter of Keith Haring and RaymondPettibon.

Venice, which borders Santa Monica to the south,is home to the popular LA Louver gallery. Locatedon a sunny stretch of Venice Boulevard, La Louveris best known for “Rouge Wave,” an annual exhi-bition showcasing emerging L.A. artists, as wellas for its roster of recognizable mid-career artistsincluding Richard Deacon, Deborah Butterfieldand Dale Chihuly. The New York-based L&M Artsis constructing a two-building complex down thestreet with a planned opening of September 2010and will kick off their exhibition program with ashow by Paul McCarthy. Though L&M consideredopening a branch in Berlin, the gallery eventuallysettled on Los Angeles, citing a creative energy inthe city similar to that of New York in the fifties.

Area Figurative movement. John BerggruenGallery, among the most prominent in the city, hasan established reputation for exhibiting seminalCalifornia artists like Richard Diebenkorn, RichardSerra and Ed Ruscha. Berggruen is located oneblock west of Union Square on Grant Avenue.

But it’s to the south of Union Square, in the MissionDistrict, where a handful of relatively young gal-lerists are working closely with local artists, hop-ing to usher in a new era of San Francisco culture.Despite having one of the highest artist per capitarates in the world, San Francisco has been largelyunable to provide the kind of international expo-sure emerging artists need to build an establishedreputation. Mission galleries like Ratio-3, TripleBase, Fecal Face, Jack Hanley and, in theTendernob district, Silverman Gallery, are hopingto change this with progressive curatorial programsdesigned to garner international attention for bothemerging local artists and the San Francisco artsscene. Chris Perez of Ratio-3, who has made aname for himself with high profile exhibitions likethe West Coast debut of Ryan McGinley, regularlyexhibits young locals like Mitzi Pederson andJonathan Runico. Jessica Silverman, the 26-yearold founder of Silverman Gallery, cultivates rela-tionships with galleries abroad, bringing in thework of emerging international artists while send-ing her artists to show overseas. And Fecal FaceDot Gallery, the physical manifestation of the pop-ular e-zine Fecalface.com, has largely been cred-ited with legitimizing the New Mission School, amovement with roots in street culture and comic art.

Across the Bay Bridge in Oakland, gallery cultureis informed by the city’s gritty, grassroots history.Oakland has long been a hotbed of activism andattendant feelings of solidarity and optimism per-

If Los Angeles is approaching the apotheosis of itscreative evolution, San Francisco is just beginningthe ascent. After spending decades entangled inassociations with the counterculture, the city is step-ping beyond the hazy shadow of history and rais-ing its profile in the world of contemporary art.The area has arguably never been aligned withemerging artists in the way that other major citieshave. But as symbiosis between a new generationof gallerists and artists develops, the city seems tobe poised on the brink of major cultural change.

Union Square, bordered by four main streets,Stockton, Geary, Post and Powell, is situated in theheart of downtown and is home to the majority ofthe city’s most well-established galleries. Many arelocated at 49 Geary Street, where galleriesoccupy several floors of space. Fraenkel Gallery,on the fourth floor, has been operating since 1979and has a diverse history of photographic exhibi-tions that includes Diane Arbus, Richard Avedonand Sol LeWitt. One flight up, Robert KochGallery, also since 1979, maintains an extensivecollection of historical and contemporary photog-raphy with special emphasis on modernist andexperimental work of 1920’s and 30’s. Jack FischerGallery eschews easy categorization, offering aneclectic mix of intuitive, folk and outsider art. AndHaines Gallery, occupying a multi-room space onthe fifth floor, has a reputation for a progressiveexhibition program which includes the first majorWest Coast showings of Andy Goldsworthy andthe YBA’s. Rena Bransten, a longtime San Franciscogallerist, is located just up the street at 77 Geary.

vade the burgeoning arts district in the city’s up-town neighborhood. Centered around a stretch ofTelegraph Avenue, the district was the scene of an“art renaissance” in 2006 when a spate of newgalleries opened within months of one another.Looking for way to maximize the area’s exposure,gallerists began to work cooperatively, conceivinga cross-promoted first Friday event christened the“Oakland Art Murmur”. Immediately popular withlocals, the event managed to garner considerablenational attention by its third year. And though thelandscape has shifted considerably since 2006,several galleries in the district have become well-established. Johannson Projects, on the corner ofTelegraph and 23rd, works with a recognizableroster of mid-career artists including Devorah Sper-ber and Jim Campbell; Hatch Gallery, on 23rd,maintains a diverse mix of outsider/folk, experi-mental and pop; while Rock Paper Scissors Col-lective and The Compound, both on Telegraph,are run by artists and volunteers. A few blocksaway in the Ironworks district, Swarm galleryfocuses on contemporary and experimental workand runs The Nest, a neighborhood artist resi-dency program. The cooperative spirit that seemsto define the district extends beyond the galleriesto the small, devoted community of collectors thathas formed around them. “We affectionately callthem ‘emerging collectors’,” says one gallerist.“They may not spend the same kind of money ascollectors in other areas, but they’re highly sup-portive of Oakland artists and tend to follow themthroughout their careers. There’s just a tremendousamount of good will here right now.” M

Jane Gennaro’s art is imbued with a sense of con-nection to the natural “found objects” she has dis-covered in the environs of her country home in NewYork State. Animal bones, insect parts, goose eggs,tortoise skulls and snake skins form the original im-petus for a diverse array of collages, assemblages,sculptures and drawings that combine natural itemswith personal articles such as clothing and bedding.In an intuitive creative process, Gennaro formulatesvisual ideas in response to the shapes and texturesthat attract her. This process stirs childhood memo-ries, transforming them into individual yet universalvisual narratives. The work delves into the sanctityof nature, the mystery of daily life, death, birth andregeneration.

The Bones and Egg series projects a dimensionof holiness inherent in the spiritual feeling ofthe sancti ty of l i fe and the natural world.Using white gauze or string, with eggs affixedto canvas, Gennaro creates soft web-like nestsusually associated with gestation. This formatelicits a sense of promise with the expectationthat culminates in bir th and regeneration. Thehint of gestation evokes a dimension of time inthe works. In some pieces, the eggs seem tobe trapped as in a spider’s web. The group ofwhite wall reliefs, especially the cross format,exude a feeling of purity and holiness usuallyassociated with the silent reverence one feelswhen approaching a shrine or entering achapel. The whiteness symbolizes the new be-ginnings of a tabula rasa. The Brides of Bonesculpture, constructed of deer bones and fab-ric, has a phantom, nostalgic quality of ghostlyapparitions glimpsed in moonlight.

The Model series of cutout fashion magazine fig-ures comments on contemporary cultural values.In these works, Gennaro projects the anger shefeels at the diminished bodies and sick souls thatresult from the requisite starvation weight thatmodels must maintain in order to qualify for theirjobs in the fashion industry. This expectation ofthinness is a modern phenomenon. That theseemaciated beings are role models for young girlsis anathema to the increasingly liberated, self-actualizing contemporary woman. The artist alsoperforms a monologue called “Feed the Models”during the course of the exhibition.

In the related Hair and Model series, Gennaroemploys her own hair as lines in her intuitivedrawing process that results in an amalgam ofabstract flowing visceral organisms. Nervous ten-sion ignites a condition called trichotillomania, inwhich one pulls one’s hair out, strand by strand.She cites “hair pulling” as a female affliction, butuses this impulse creatively in her drawing pro-cedure.

The Kinderdraussen collages invoke the inno-cence of childhood by recreating the magic andwonder of early “bedtime” stories. In this nostal-gic series, Gennaro simulates the aura of fairytales by employing soft colors, flowers, bees,bones, insects, and eggs fixed on top of Eisen-hower era handkerchiefs. To these she adds vin-tage coloring book graphics of young childrenbusily reading, sleeping or at play. The workstap the power of fantasy to stir the childhoodmemories that persist within every adult child.

Gennaro’s highly imaginative, inventive art flowsfrom a consciousness of the unity of all forms oflife on the planet. She follows her muse, JosephCornell, in making narrative theatrical works im-bued with a sense of mystery. M

During his first one person show in New York, self-taughtItalian artist Andrea Chiesi discusses his paintings,

which are based on photographs that he takes of emptyand abandoned spaces.

Many of your paintings feature abandonedplaces. Why did you choose these places to paint?I started to paint abandoned places like factories andheavy industry because I’m interested in painting thehistory and memory of the last century. My firstmedium was shooting photos, but then I wanted torealize a traditional technique, oil on canvas becauseI love the history of Italian painting. I tried to do a newview of painting with the emotion of our time. Paintingoil on canvas, oil on linen. I change the colors, thephotos, to be just black and white. And I transformthe real places into more metaphysical places; aboutthe mind, the soul, nowhere.

I could feel that because I’ve seen similar workin Chinese art, with abandoned pictures; butthey were just pure photographs. Yours arepaintings; there is the emotion, the sadness ofsomething that it is gone. There is emotion. I tryto give light, I try to stop the time. Suspend the mo-ment. It is interesting for me to give hope to these kindsof pictures about shadow; the shadow of the light.It’s a spiritual search, about control, about concen-trating the technique of painting. I mean it’s hard to getthe light; it’s similar to life, there is hope, in going tothe light.

About hope, what do you mean? It’s a simpleview. First, I’m a painter. I use language with im-agery, I think one of the powers paintings have itthat they give something to your soul. It’s a religiousway of thinking of life. These painted places areout of time, out of the world, so I try to give hopeto myself and to those who view the pictures.

Each person who sees your paintings will have adifferent feeling; the experience is different. Onemay see the sadness, others the hope, all have different interpretations. Are these all of the sameplace? Yes, it’s an abandoned place, a factory. It wasa steel factory, abandoned and collapsed. It livesagain in the pictures, like a cathedral of our time.

Many of your paintings study architecture. I didn’tstudy architecture, but I’m interested in places wherepeople have passed through. These places are wait-ing for people to come again; my interest is in paint-ing, not architecture.

I understand that you are self tought, for all of thepaintings. Did you also do the photography thatthe paintings are based on? Yes, for me it’s neces-sary to go to places. I never use photos shot by some-one else, or downloaded from the internet. I have togo and feel the place. A lot of times I have problemswith the police; they’re closed places and so I don’thave authorization. I like exploring the landscape,seeing the transformation of the town. That’s the firstpart. The final part, the panting is more spiritual.

First you take pictures, then you make the paintings. That’s how you do it? Yes, first there is the real,physical place. Then I paint, and another processstarts. I change the light and architecture; the tech-nique is traditional. Hand drawn, slow painting.These sizes take at least two weeks to a month de-pending on my concentration. It’s very detailed, alot of technique. The detail is what I mean aboutlife being difficult, to go into the light.

How did you teach yourself painting? I starteddrawing in the 1980’s when I was young. But not in

a contemporary style, I started drawing in punk rockgothic, I drew alterative kinds things; I arrived at oilon canvas later. It’s been a slow process. But it’salways growing.

How did you start to work with this gallery, withNohra? She saw my gallery show in Milan, at mygallery there last year. It was simple, she liked it. Thenthere were some months for organizing the transport,new pictures, new work.

I feel in the contemporary art world, I haven’tseen work similar to yours, most people doportraits. The feeling of your painting is unique,it’s not only technique but the way you present it.You’re very kind; you’re right, maybe that’s so. I didnot study art, I became a painter through drawing.

Did you do an apprenticeship? No, it was some-thing that I had inside me, I had to get it out, toexpress it.

What about your family? My sister is a painter butshe never exhibited. It’s my own motivation andchoice of life. To be a painter now, doing this kind ofpainting, it was at first a life choice. Then sometimeafter, it became my job — what I doing for a living.In Italy, there are many people doing architecture orart who did not study. The Italians seem to know, onthe street, about painting. It’s a good, cultured envi-ronment. Many people absorb the centuries of art;but the problem now in Italy is that the governmentdoesn’t invest much in culture, so artists have had todo a lot on their own. There is not political culture forcontemporary art, so everyone is alone. The atmos-phere is good for starting and growing up, and thentrying to do other things outside. M
