A visit to your local wildlife park just south of Burford, Cotswold Wildlife Parkand Gardens is a trip to be enjoyed by all members of the family.

It is one of Oxfordshire’s major attractions and one of the most beautiful wildlife parksin the country. There are over 250 species of animals, large and small ranging from thecolony of leaf-cutting ants in the Invertebrate House to the three White Rhinos grazingin front of the Manor House. Great favourites with the visitors as they walk aroundthe beautifully landscaped parkland, include meerkats, giraffes, lions, lemurs andpenguins. Also a new giraffe walkway where you can get eye to eye with these amazingcreatures.

We spoke to Curator Jamie Craig who told us excitedly about forthcoming events atCotswold. “Most visitors to the Park will know about the animals and the gardens, butmaybe not so much about the interactive events we have on. Recently we had a scruffsdog show, where people could bring in their dogs and we gave out prizes. Weatherpermitting, we are going to have a Lemur week as they are very popular with visitors.“We also raise a lot of money for conservation as we feel it is now important ratherthan just show these animals we do need to give something back. I recently visitedMadagascar to see lemurs in the wild. I was also able to see, first-hand, how the fundswe raise are put to good use. Tents are being bought for researchers, plants are beingreplanted for forests and so much other good work. Lemurs are one of my favouriteanimals and they cope very well in captivity.

“We also have the local Cotswold falconry centre each weekend throughout thesummer, which is very educational and visitors can come along and see thesemagnificent creatures flying around with the Manor House in the background – it’squite a sight! We are also, for the first time in a number of years, expecting babypenguins. They’re obviously massively popular with the keepers and with the visitorsalike. They will hatch in June / July.

“We also have Wolverines breeding at the moment. These are also very popular, especially since the X Men films which feature ’Wolverine’. People think they are terriblyfierce and fearless but this is not the case. They are lovely creatures. I think this is thefirst time they have bred in Europe and they are certainly the only ones breeding in anyzoo in Europe this year.

“We have plenty of babies at the moment: Camels, Lemurs, Tamarinds and Monkeys,so it’s a lovely time to visit. The birds are nesting and the weather is getting warmer. There is a lot of optimism in the air and the animals detect the signals that it’s springand summer’s coming.”

Keep checking the website for more information about events and new arrivals. The Parkis open daily from 10am, with special events during the summer months. Seewww.cotswoldwildlifepark.co.uk for full information or call 01993 823006. It is situatedjust 2.5 miles south of the famous Cotswold town of Burford.

Nowadays, men and women alike have an equal desire to look their best in theirsummer clothes, beach and sportswear, and this means maintaining smooth hair-free skin in those body areas that matter. However, this can be painful – bothphysically and financially! Julie Mutton, of Bare UK answers questions about IPL hairremoval and its advantages over conventional treatments.

Julie, who should consider IPL?Plucking, shaving, waxing and using depilatory creams are inconvenient andunsatisfactory options for many people. Not only can they be messy and timeconsuming, they can also be painful. IPL (Intense Pulse Light), a form of laser treatment, could offer you an effective, virtually pain-free alternative, with really great long termresults.

How does IPL work?IPL use a process called photothermolysis to convert light energy into heat energy;that transmits along an individual hair into the follicle. Follicles have cycles of growthand resting phases. The heat from the IPL affects those in the early growth phase, sohair cannot grow again. Repeat treatments ensure the follicles of all unwanted hairs areeventually destroyed.

So how long does this process take? Further treatments are tied in with the growth cycles of the follicles, so are generally4-6 weeks apart. At Bare, thanks to our very efficient system, typically only 6-12 ofthese are needed to ensure that most of the hair follicles in any given area aresuccessfully targeted. This process is much quicker than electrolysis and fewertreatments mean a lower overall cost.

How effective is it? This depends on your hair and skin type, and also the system used, since those availablevary in both quality and effectiveness. At Bare we investigated several options beforedeciding to invest in leading edge hair removal technology in the form of a high-gradeIPL system. This produces very effective results, dramatically reducing unwanted hair.

What does it cost? IPL treatment requires specialist equipment and expertise, so it can be quite expensiveinitially. However, you’ll save time and money in the long run, since once the hair isgone, it’s gone for good - you could save a fortune on wax treatments! Plus, prices atBare are extremely competitive, and our five-session package includes a free treatment.

Julie Mutton is a fully trained practitioner of IPL and other aesthetic treatments. Sheoffers a personal, discreet and caring service from her private treatment rooms in BoarsHill. To book an appointment or further information about IPL and any othertreatments offered by Bare UK, contact Julie on 07773 764817 or [email protected]

The beautiful, ultra-cool Electric Hairdressing boutique celebrates its first year inOxford… and what a busy 12 months it has been!

Not only have they brought beautiful hairdressing to Oxford, they have embraced thecity in a truly fantastic way. Throughout the year they have raised money for numerouscharities, with specialist feature and pamper evenings designed to give everyone anetworking event whilst making a difference. Along the way people get to know theElectric ethos of down-to-earth, yet impeccable, service and exemplary hairdressing.

Two events that stand out have been:

The pamper evening for Oxford University hospitals and their fundraiser for the newbreast screening units. The great and the good of Oxford attended and we raised over£700 for the charity on the night.

A night with a difference was also organised with Dave Beesley and the OPCSG charity.A male grooming experience was put on with haircuts by the leading hairdressers inElectric, there were also head and shoulder massages for the men from Canelle Beauté,personal training advice, canapés from Malmaison and entertainment from a fantasticroving Opera singer. The Oxford United football team also turned up and helped raiseover £1800 for the charity.

The Electric hairdressing salon and its team are more than just great hairdressers, theyare most definitely part of our community.

I asked the gurus of hairdressing what trends we should be following thissummer:

Top 5 colour trends:

1. Blondes move away from sun-kissed and warm honey shades to tones of soft andpale blonde. Think pearl, iridescent, light champagne and even whites and nudes.

2. Brunettes also move out of the warm and into shades of earthy mauves andshimmering golds. Working with a block of base colour, hand-painted panels of tonesfrom complementary palettes are added to create a multi-dimensional look that shinesto give the appearance of luxurious texture.

3. Pastels float straight from the catwalks and into the salons. We are already seeingslices of corals, pinks and blues into blondes with shades of teal in brunettes.

4. Full head colour might be reserved for the adventurous but scarlet, teal, coral, nudeand pink requests are ever increasing. Taking inspiration from popular music, this is afresh, vibrant and experimental trend.

5. Ombre is stronger and more popular than it has ever been as new techniques andcolours develop. The key technique used, Balayage, is ever evolving and is becomingone of the most requested in the UK as people seek to take warm blonde into thepalest nude whilst cooler brunettes seep into shimmering golds. A natural effect iscreated using nude and earthy tones delivered by L’Oreal Professional’s INOA colourrange. The brightest and boldest are further experimenting with tips showcasing coral, pink and crimson hues.

If you haven’t been, its time you made an appointment.

Weird Science An introduction to anomalistic psychologyThursday 10th May: Ever since records began, in every known society, a substantialproportion of the population has reported unusual experiences many of which wewould today label as “paranormal”. Opinion polls show that the majority of thegeneral public accepts that paranormal phenomena do occur. Such widespreadexperience of and belief in the paranormal can only mean one of two things. Eitherthe paranormal is real, in which case this should be accepted by the wider scientificcommunity which currently rejects such claims; or else belief in and experience of ostensibly paranormalphenomena can be fully explained in terms of psychological factors. It was my Grandson’s fifth birthday and a special outing was required.

The choices were attractive. Anfield to see Liverpool vs. Arsenal, Cheltenham Racecourseto have a flutter or, er, A Day Out with Thomas at Didcot Railway Centre. Dilemma? No!Thomas, naturally, was the clear choice.

My guests were to be two experts on the subject of Thomas the Tank Engine andFriends. Oliver, the five year-old and my son Alfie, eight years old. Strangely enough, onthe Island of Sodor, Oliver is a 0-4-2 Tank Engine and Alfie is “a really useful Excavator”whose motto is “More help means more dirt; more dirt means more fun.” Not thatdifferent from real life then.

I have visited Didcot Railway Centre many times over the past few years and everyvisit has been interesting and fun. Their unique collection is of Great Western Railwaysteam engines, coaches, wagons, buildings and small relics, all based around the original1930’s engine shed. In addition there is the exciting interactive Science, Learning &Railways Exhibition, a reasonably priced café and a modest gift shop. I love it.

In addition to the Steam days, when the locomotives pull and push coaches up anddown the branch lines which are very exciting for both the children and the grown ups,Thomas occasionally makes an appearance. At such a time, there is an exponentialgrowth in excitement and attendance. This is hardly surprising since, according to thataugust and reliable journal The Sun, over 100 million Thomas books have been soldworldwide putting the Oxford educated Revd. W. Awdry on a par with J.R.R. Tolkein andJ.K.Rowling! Oh, and since you ask, the “W” stands for Wilbert.

Literally hundreds of children were ahead of us, but as usual with the DRC, the day hadbeen meticulously planned by the staff and we had all been allotted a time to arrive. The excitement on the boys faces when they saw the familiar visage of Thomas waspalpable. Somehow in real life this short stumpy tank engine managed to convey thecheekiness that comes across in the books and on screen. To have the opportunity, inaddition to seeing Thomas, to travel in a carriage pulled by him - what on earth couldbe better than this?

In addition to the rides behind ‘Thomas’ and 'Duck' there were lots of otherentertainments for the children including magic shows, Punch & Judy shows, circusworkshops, balloon model makers, colouring competitions and ‘spot the character’competitions. Each child received a souvenir Junior Engineer's certificate signed by SirTopham Hatt himself!

It was all done to perfection. That is, everything in the management’s control. We didhave a couple of inches of “rather cloudy” to contend with and some delays on themain line to Oxford, but everything else was such fun it didn’t matter. The FatController, who was supervising Thomas’s visit, was surprisingly svelte in his adiposityand he was convivial for all. He made me laugh anyway.

Without doubt the prettiest restaurant in Oxford, housed in an elegant Victorianconservatory on the Banbury Road in north Oxford. Drive past at night and itstwinkling lights will seduce you and remind you that, whatever the occasion,Gee’s is not only pretty to look at, the food is pretty stunning too.

Under the leadership of new Director of Food, Julian O’Neil, we knew the experiencewas going to be great before we took our seats in this contemporary restaurant ….wewere wrong, it was exceptional. There are three vital ingredients that a restaurant hasto at least try and combine to ensure their customer leaves satisfied. Obviously thefood has to be good, there has to be just the right ambience, and, finally, the serviceneeds to be spot on.

Gee’s scores well above average on all counts, and although it’s not an inexpensiverestaurant, it also ticks the fourth box which all of us are so conscious of….value formoney.

We were out with two very good friends of ours, although at Gee’s you are not aloneas it effortlessly combines every dinner party you can conceivably imagine under oneroof. Although the tables are in fairly close proximity to each other, this all adds to theintimacy of the ‘event’. It really is an experience to have your own space surroundedby families celebrating a grandfather’s birthday, couples on the nervous first steps ofcourtship, academics challenging one another (brains not fists I hasten to add) andquartets, like us, enjoying a night out without the children.

I’d mentioned the service – it was excellent. The manager, Elisabete, greeted us talkedthrough the menu and specials for the day and gave us her undivided attention despitethe full restaurant behind her. This was a trait we noticed in all the staff, friendly, knowledgeable and giving of their time, without being intrusive.

I had the chicken liver parfait to start whilst Tina plumped for the spiced stuffed pepper.Tina had seared scallops, Jerusalem artichoke, salsify & bacon – a fantastic combination– cooked to perfection I went for the slow cooked ‘Rofford Farm’ beef. Elisabete hadexplained that this was Aberdeen Angus beef from the owner’s Oxfordshire farm whichalso provides Gee’s with lamb and pork for the restaurant. We couldn’t fault the food, and Tina even had a little bit of room for the cheese selection, all English by the way, whilst I can always accommodate a decent apple & rhubarb crumble (with deliciouscustard!) We were joined by a trusted bottle of Rioja, Vina Zaco, Bodegas de Bilbainas(2008) following a chilled glass of champagne all round.

We’ll be back for the Jazz - weekly Sunday Supper Jazz Nights with a great value JazzMenu - plus newly introduced monthly jazz concerts - and I look forward to a leisurelysummer’s Sunday lunch with the family – the perfect venue for a big family gathering.

Gee’s is an occasion restaurant for sure – but use your imagination and you cancelebrate pretty much anything these days, so no need for an excuse!
