Lead Article

A visit to your local wildlife park just south of Burford, Cotswold Wildlife Park

and Gardens, is a trip to be enjoyed by all members of the family.

It is one of Oxfordshire’s major attractions and one of the most beautiful wildlife parks

in the country. There are over 250 species of animals, large and small ranging from the

colony of leaf-cutting ants in the Invertebrate House to the three White Rhinos grazing

in front of the Manor House. Great favourites with the visitors as they walk around

the beautifully landscaped parkland, include meerkats, giraffes, lions, lemurs and

penguins. Latest residents include a pair of anteaters and three porcupines; latest births

include lemurs and Scimitar Horned Oryx.

Don’t miss the Madagascar enclosure where you walk with lemurs and where there

are some of the world’s rarest animals. The beautiful Sifaka lemurs are the only ones

on view in the country. A talk takes place here daily at 12 noon on the plight of these

animals in the wild and the Park has raised thousands of pounds to be used in their

conservation. It is necessary for “Madagascar” to have restricted opening so visit this

area between 11.30am and 3pm.

There are many signs of spring in the gardens with the bulbs and early flowering shrubs

and trees and very soon there will be wonderful displays of alliums.

Throughout the Park there are many very fine old trees, including a 600 year oak which

gives its name to the Oak Tree Restaurant. During the last couple of years many young

trees have also been planted and late summer should see some glorious reds and

yellows of autumn foliage emerging.

Families enjoy a day out at the Park walking around, riding on the train, having a picnic

or eating in the large self-service restaurant. Children enjoy the farmyard, the adventure

playground, the reptile house and the invertebrate house. There is so much to see.

Facilities are excellent with good access for wheelchairs and buggies.

The Park is also popular for group visits for parties of all ages and for school groups;

special discounted rates apply.

The Park is open daily from 10am, with special events during the summer months. See

www.cotswoldwildlifepark.co.uk for full information or call 01993 823006. It is situated

just 2.5 miles south of the famous Cotswold town of Burford.

Attraction Review

Visit the no.1 site for What’s On in Oxford: www.inoxford.com20

It was my Grandson’s third birthday and a special outing was required.

The choices were attractive. Anfield to see Liverpool vs. Arsenal, Cheltenham Racecourseto have a flutter or, er, A Day Out with Thomas at Didcot Railway Centre. Dilemma? No!

Thomas, naturally, was the clear choice.

My guests were to be two experts on the subject of Thomas the Tank Engine andFriends. Oliver, the four year-old and my son Alfie, seven years old. Strangely enough,on the Island of Sodor, Oliver is a 0-4-2 Tank Engine and Alfie is “a really usefulExcavator” whose motto is “More help means more dirt; more dirt means more fun.”Not that different from real life then.

I have visited Didcot Railway Centre many times over the past few years and everyvisit has been interesting and fun. Their unique collection is of Great Western Railwaysteam engines, coaches, wagons, buildings and small relics, all based around the original1930’s engine shed. In addition there is the exciting interactive Science, Learning &Railways Exhibition, a reasonably priced café and a modest gift shop. I love it.

In addition to the Steam days, when the locomotives pull and push coaches up anddown the branch lines which are very exciting for both the children and the grown ups,Thomas occasionally makes an appearance. At such a time, there is an exponentialgrowth in excitement and attendance. This is hardly surprising since, according to thataugust and reliable journal The Sun, over 100 million Thomas books have been soldworldwide putting the Oxford educated Revd. W. Awdry on a par with J.R.R. Tolkein andJ.K.Rowling! Oh, and since you ask, the “W” stands for Wilbert.

Literally hundreds of children were ahead of us, but as usual with the DRC, the day hadbeen meticulously planned by the staff and we had all been allotted a time to arrive. The excitement on the boys faces when they saw the familiar visage of Thomas waspalpable. Somehow in real life this short stumpy tank engine managed to convey thecheekiness that comes across in the books and on screen. To have the opportunity, inaddition to seeing Thomas, to travel in a carriage pulled by him - what on earth couldbe better than this?

In addition to the rides behind ‘Thomas’ and 'Duck' there were lots of otherentertainments for the children including magic shows, Punch & Judy shows, circusworkshops, balloon model makers, colouring competitions and ‘spot the character’competitions. Each child received a souvenir Junior Engineer's certificate signed by SirTopham Hatt himself!

It was all done to perfection. That is, everything in the management’s control. We didhave a couple of inches of “rather cloudy” to contend with and some delays on themain line to Oxford, but everything else was such fun it didn’t matter. The FatController, who was supervising Thomas’s visit, was surprisingly svelte in his adiposityand he was convivial for all. He made me laugh anyway.

Eckersley Oxford is one of the oldest language schools in the UK having beenfounded in 1955 by the eponymous John Eckersley.

Eckersley Oxford is accredited by the British Council, is a member of English UK and hasbeen awarded an A-rating on the UK Border Agency Register of Sponsors.

The school is situated in a quiet pedestrian street in the heart of the city, close to TheAshmolean Museum, theatres, historic pubs and Colleges.

Our courses are designed for ambitious students who want to achieve maximumprogress during their stay with us and then go back to work, university or school feelingmore confident and competent in English.

We will take special care to ensure that you have opportunities to link what you learnin the classroom to the real world outside.

With 11 classrooms, Eckersley Oxford can welcome up to 160 full-time students fromall over the world at any time. Many of the rooms have interactive white-boards,laptops and projectors installed and the 21st Century setting is continued elsewherein the school. There is a brand new digital language laboratory where the students canalso check emails and there is wireless Internet access throughout the school.

The students' room is equipped with TV and games including table tennis, a keyboardand guitar as well as the kitchen where students often prepare meals for the popularinternational lunches! There is also a screen projector for watching films. One theunusual features of the school is the roof garden where students and staff can sit andrelax and there are even classes held outside.

As we know, all work and no play is not much fun so at Eckersley Oxford there is adedicated social programmes organiser who makes sure that students, whether 16 or70, can enjoy their stay in Oxford. Most students will stay with one of Eckersley'sextensive network of host families, but the school also has a student residence withinabout 15 minutes' walk.

The staff at Eckersley Oxford are dedicated to providing a great service in a great cityand celebrating a proud tradition with a very contemporary outlook, embodied in theschool strapline, 'Our Past Building Your Future'.

My Trip to Legoland, by Matthew (9 years old – nearly 10)!

“Wow! What a day – my best day ever! Legoland was great fun with lots of differentand exciting things to do. The best bit was getting really wet and the Viking ride wasmy favourite, it was awesome!”

“The pirate ride was scary and brill at the same time and apart from jumping in to theswimming pool on my holidays, I have never been that wet before!

“Had to queue up a long time to get on Laser Raiders, but it was worth the wait. It wasfab! And I really enjoyed learning to drive and getting my Lego license.”

“I would really love to go back again soon as there was too much to fit in to just oneday, but my Dad says I need to be good and then he might take me again.”

“That was the best day of my life and I’m only 9 years old.”

From a parent’s point of view….

“I agree with Matthew it was a fun and exciting family day out with plenty of differentthings to do and see for kids of all ages.

“Legoland was clean, tidy, well presented and the staff were polite and helpful. As youwould expect, you had to queue for the bigger more popular rides, but as Matthewsaid, these were certainly worth the wait and gave the parents a chance to catch ourbreath!

“One day is definitely not long enough, so you need to plan what you want to do andwhen and stick to it rather than jump from queue to queue. It’s a big place, so get thereearly to make sure you can fit in as much as possible!

“Would I take Matthew there again “yes” and would I recommend it, most definitely“yes”!

LEGOLAND Windsor is a theme park dedicated to children aged 3-12 years old. Aninspirational land where the kids are the hero. It's a family attraction like no other -where the fun never stops and imagination knows no bounds.

Our many interactive rides put you, quite literally, in the driving seat. Sign the wholefamily up for some high energy fun at the Fire Academy or take to the skies with theChopper Squadron. Steer your own course on the Driving School or be captain of yourvessel at the Boating School.

Beauty Review

Has St Ebbes ever looked this cool? Another notch on their already successfulsalon portfolio, a beautiful Electric Hairdressing boutique has taken root at no. 34St Ebbes Street, Oxford… and I for one am thrilled that they’re here!

The three story building, located opposite the new entrance to Modern Art Oxford, hasbeen transformed into an airy, contemporary space, with original fixtures revealed, andnew facilities pipes winding through the spaces like industrial caterpillars.

The saying goes that design is in the detail, and this small group of salons claim thatcreativity lies at the core of the Electric brand, looking around inside the salon, or space(this place is more than just a salon), the bespoke workstations and styling chairs, thechocolate accents in the leather and wood, and the restoration of the building’s originalfeatures certainly echo this sentiment.

I was apologetically late to arrive at my appointment, Salon Director, Louise Martinezwelcomed me, and softly but firmly explained that it really is important for them notto rush any stage of the process. We had a consultation, and Louise listened, and shelooked, and she felt, and she enquired. She then waved her wand of technical expertise;she took her time, and she re-visited, and 45 minutes later I stepped onto the streetwith the best hair-cut I have had in Oxford, and feeling genuinely great about everyaspect of my experience.

Previously working at Electric Hairdressing in Reading Louise Martinez is the co-ownerof Electric Hairdressing, Oxford; she explained how she’s been spent the last 18 monthsin Oxford doing her research, visiting other salons, and learning about the city, who’shere, what her potential client base want, and where they go for it. Louise also explainedthat she’s looking to recruit more stylists, but she couldn’t emphasise enough thatshe’s in no rush to do so. The entire Electric experience is a relaxing one, absolutelyeverything is carefully considered, and analysed to the nth degree. ElectricHairdressing’s own brand of products has recently surpassed the expectations of thedons of quality control testing at Harvey Nichols, where they are now being stocked.

Casting my eyes over the price list at Electric Hairdressing it seems that the servicedoesn’t come cheap, but they say you get what you pay for, and I say that myexperience was worth it, and some, I anticipate you’ll be leaving a tip! ElectricHairdressing is the epitome of Cool (note the capital ‘C’), but in a comfortable, andwelcoming way, and it is clear that everything about Electric has the client in mind.

After being taken over and refurbished in 1998 by Julian Rosser, it was dulytransformed. It is trendy and sophisticated - the perfect place to sip deliciously uniquecocktails in clean, comfortable and elegant surroundings.

The diverse drinks menu sets high standards as Oxford is notorious for its bars andstudent population. There are, of course, tasty nibbles available to fill the gap after a fewcocktails such as chilli crackers, corn chips with salsa and guacamole and toasted pittabread with humous. But make no mistake, ultimately, the Duke is infamously known forits wonderful assortment of cocktails, as Julian explained.

“The Duke was one of the first cocktail bars in the country, and has maintained thispioneering reputation ever since.

“We’re quite tucked away, but I like that. If we were on the High Street, we would haveto have doormen with bright jackets, but that’s not us. We’re not a venue for peoplelooking to drink as much as they can before going clubbing, that’s not what we’re aboutat all.”

Entering the bar, you can’t help but catch the sparkle from the chandeliers andreflection from the dark walnut floor, and Julian is obviously proud of The Duke. “Wespend an awful lot of time making sure the place is clean, and we don’t cut corners.”

Its superb finish matches the quality cocktails, which, although not cheap, do give greatvalue for money. Only generous measures of premium spirits and the freshestingredients are used, and you won’t find alcho-pops or Red Bull at The Duke. Cocktail-making is fairly understated at The Duke.

“We’re not the kind of bar which will try and wow the customers with a show. Thefinished cocktail is our show, not the making of it. I don’t want to go to a bar and watchthem throw bottles around; I’m there to have a nice drink, presented well in a glass fullof ice.”

For a refreshing cocktail on a sizzling day this summer, the Duke of Cambridge isdefinitely the place to go. The Strawberry Daiquiri and Mojito are the Duke’s best-sellers, and I cannot think of a better cocktail to enjoy on a hot day.

Sunday to Thursday, the renowned Duke happy hour starts at 5pm until 9pm, which onFridays and Saturdays lasts until 7.30pm when they’re open until 1:00am - an hourlater than during the week. They are also open until 1:00am on Thursday.

The House, on Blue Boar Street, is also owned by Julian, and even just one year old, students have really taken to it as it has proved to be equally as popular as the Duke. With a slightly more modern ambience to the cocktail bar there is also a games roomupstairs and a heated terrace open all year.

Restaurant Review

It was a lovely Spring morning when Sue and I drove into the grounds of Rigoletto, the Italian Restaurant at Middleton Stoney, near Bicester.

We resisted the tempting offer from Giorgio Delli Compagni Junior to have our pre-lunch drinks in the lovely gardens, but sampled the beautiful Sicilian olives and peanutswith our gin and tonics in the light and bright reception area, and were told to take ourtime in choosing our meal. I very much liked the simple menu, where there was eithera set lunch choice or a la carte.

Sue went for the grilled sardines to start whereas I had the Bresaola with avocado andricotta cheese. Sue felt the sardines were out of this world whilst I found the Bresaolaincredibly tasty and tender. For main courses Sue had the calves liver with zucchini(courgettes in a light batter) and I had the grilled freshwater prawns with garlic andwhite wine. We supplemented this with a tomato and onion salad and sauté potatoes.Giorgio suggested the Sannio Falanghina, Benevento IGT 2008 which was a very fruityand refreshing dry white wine and blended ideally with our food. Sue’s calves liver wasserved very thinly cut and she loved the zucchini, one of her all time favourites, whichyou rarely find nowadays even in Italian Restaurants. My prawns were all I expected, they were served in their shells and were succulent and plentiful. They were servedwith clams and mussels also in their shells.

Giorgio Senior then joined us for coffee and we had a grand chat as to how things hadchanged in the Restaurant world and what an amazing choice of food there was nowavailable to us.

I couldn’t resist my favourite dessert, fresh oranges in Kirsch which was served from adessert trolley full of everything you could wish for.

Giorgio has owned Rigoletto for 4½ years and it is truly a family business. He makesalmost everything he can himself but insists on fresh local ingredients whereverpossible.

The Restaurant can sit 70 people in one sitting but with second sittings (which arefrequently required on Saturday evenings) almost double that number can be cateredfor.

After our Espresso coffees Sue and I went on our way. It won’t be long before we’reback!

We hadn’t been to The Perch for a very long time, so it was with a very‘unexpectant’ frame of mind that we both entered the restaurant. What instantlystruck us was the warmth of the place, immediately after we entered. There wasa lovely log fire, very cosy armchairs and Chesterfields which all contributed tomaking it a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Johnny Mignon and his business partner Celine de la Roche have created somethingvery special at The Perch and when we received our food we understood, this Restauranthas to be one of the very finest in Oxford.

We were soon given the Menus and it was nice to see everything set out so clearlyand simply with even a separate menu for the children. Interestingly there is asuggestion for each course of a wine that compliments it. I should stress that the Menuwas the Spring one (Notre Menu de Printemps) which is shortly to be replaced with anew Summer Menu.

After we had some delightful Spanish olives and a basket of freshly baked bread and abottle of ice cold still water, we had our starters. Sue chose the Chicken Liver Parfait, which was served with toasted brioche and pickles and I went for the Yellowfin Tunacarpaccio which came with a black olive and caper vinaigrette, together with a softboiled free range egg.

The presentation was absolutely amazing and the tastes and flavours, stunning. Wedidn’t quite stick to the recommendations for wine so we compromised with aLebanese ‘Massaya Rose’, a fresh and full bodied rose made from Syrah and Cinsault. Itwas dry, aromatic and very (too) easy to drink.

Our main courses were then served, Sue had the seared Cornish scallops, in acauliflower puree, with crispy courgettes and a curry oil and apple jelly. I had the filletof cod, with cockles, tarragon and baby spring vegetables.

We both couldn’t have been happier with our food and we went out of our way tocongratulate the chef on a superb meal.

Mind you we hadn’t finished yet as I couldn’t resist the bourbon vanilla crème bruleeand Johnny supplied Sue with a ‘just in case spoon’. Afterwards we strolled in thegardens and wandered down to The Isis where we watched the rowers practicing theirtechnique. I was amazed how large the grounds were and the many seatingarrangements that the staff were preparing for the Summer. There were a couple ofoutside bars and a separate bar-b-que area.

The Perch really is the sum of many parts, principally the high quality of the fine dining, then the comfortable relaxed atmosphere in the welcoming bar area and then thegardens.

I couldn’t think of anything nicer on a hot summers evening than to take all thegrandchildren to the bar b que. Mind you Sue and I might just find ourselves in theRestaurant to sample some more of that delightful food.

Oxford has a really serious restaurant in The Perch. You simply must give it a try.
