NEWS in association with

Ever liked the idea of owning an electric car? Well, we haven't, there are far betteralternatives to electric that wont disrupt the infrastructure and offer better results. Butif you do then you're in luck, Oxford is shortly to become the home of the electric carin Europe, unofficially, we guess. This means it's going to be easier for those with electriccars to zip in and around the city and have access to charge points.

You will soon start to see these charge points pop in car parks, restaurants, supermarkets and other prime locations. An electric car will take 20mins to an hour to chargeand will only have a range of 100miles! Great if all you want to do is park up in town,go to a restaurant or take a trip to the supermarket. We wouldn’t recomend all threeon one charge though.

Oxford Powers On!

Paris to Oxford is a long way to ride a bike, that's 280 miles of hard graft. We're nowcommitted, determined and looking forward to the challenge!…well, some of us morethan others. We have a team built up from members of the B4 Network such as cyclingadonis David Robertson and total ‘Sunday cyclists’ such as In Oxford's Richard Rosser.

We will be travelling to Paris on 1st June and starting the Ride from the Arc de Triompheon the 2nd June. We hope to arrive at Blenheim Palace on the 4th June where acomfortable seat and a cold drink will be ready and waiting for us.

If you would like to support us and Oxfam in our ride, please head over tohttp://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/b4bikeride All donations will be gratefullyreceived and will be for a great cause.

Support the In Oxford team as we ridefrom Paris to Blenheim Palace

Treat yourself, or a loved one this summer, with a unique gift from the Universityof Oxford Shop!

Located on the high street, The University of Oxford Shop is well known for its officialuniversity merchandise – from college hoodies, to university cufflinks, lapel pins andties. However, step inside and like me you might be surprised to find a whole range ofhand-made gifts, beautiful collectables, and exclusive souvenirs, just waiting to bediscovered.

With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee fast approaching, my attention was first drawn tothe exquisite range of commemorative china pieces, by Royal Scot Crystal. The tea cupand saucer, tankard and cake plate have all been hand painted in England with aturquoise background, and decorated with golden friezes, crowns and the Royal Coatof Arms. In keeping with the shop’s interest in unique, hand-made items, my attentionwas also caught by the striking solid silver, crown necklace – a definite must have forall jewellery lovers, and only to be found in the University of Oxford Shop!

The shop also has a growing and exclusive range of boat race stationery items - journals, magnetic bookmarks, binders and notebooks, all printed with an aerial view of a rowingcrew out on the water. The intriguing design is by Charles Paine, taken from a 1923 boatrace advertising poster. These would definitely appeal to tourists, locals and studentsalike!

If you are after a gift for father’s day, then look no further than the shop’s selection ofleather products. I would definitely choose the Rhodes weekender travel bag, madefrom high quality leather, but there are also i pad cases, folders, and wallets.

As you explore further into the back of the shop, you find yourself surrounded by awide variety of clothing items. Here you can find new and exclusive designs, includingthe eye- catching Radcliffe Camera T-shirt, so called, as it has been printed with theimage of this iconic building. Look closely and you will notice that the building hasbeen skilfully created using the names of Oxford streets, colleges and landmarks. Thiswill be ideal for me to wear on my summer holiday and the Radcliffe Camera bag, bearing the same design, will be useful on trips to the shops, or beach!

In this section of the shop, you can also find new Oxford cricket wear. The wool sweaterand cricket cap are both made in England, with colours taken from the University ofOxford crest -- again, another ideal Oxford related gift for the summer months.

My favourite items are from the exclusive Snakeshead Fritillary range, designed andmade by local craftspeople. With cushions, earrings, teapots and notebooks on offer, there is so much to choose from.

The shop prides itself on serving not only students and staff members, but localcommunities, and passing tourists. So whatever you need this summer, the Universityof Oxford shop is definitely the first place to look.

Are you looking for the best tour guide in Oxfordshire? Have you ever wanted to

learn about this city and its famous University? Well now’s your chance, with

Oxford’s City Sightseeing tour bus!

This is the perfect choice for tourists looking to explore this beautiful city, to Oxonians,

wishing to learn about the City that they live in. You will find all you need to know on

this bus tour with a little added humour to boot!

The adventure started at Oxford railway station, where we collected our tickets and

then we were directed to the relevant stop. We were about to embark on City

Sightseeing’s open-top bus tour, and rain or shine, you’re always in for a treat, with

amazing views and exquisite architecture; what more could a person want? There are

two types of buses, one with a live guide and one that has a taped commentary with

a wide variety of languages.

Including 19 stops such as Christ Church, Sheldonian Theatre and Queen’s College, this

bus tour is really the best way to see “The City of Dreaming Spires” from taking a sneak

peek into the colleges with their immaculate lawns and century’s old charm, to learning

the history of the oldest pubs. By the way, did you know Harry Potter was filmed in

Oxford? And have you wondered why there is an Alice in Wonderland shop located in

St Aldates? Now I know that the original sweet shop found there was Lewis Carroll’s

inspiration for the old sheep shop in Alice Through the Looking-Glass, it would be a

travesty for it to move! You will discover this during your journey. I have to admit it’s

quite interesting to know how the colleges and faculties work and realize that a lot of

authors, prime ministers and world famous individuals have studied at Oxford.

You can hop on and off the bus all day and for this reason I recommend you to take

the 48hrs valid ticket so the first day you can see and listen all about the most

important venues and then you can visit them. But, with this ticket you are offered a

wide variety of discounts in both shops and restaurants.

So in my opinion this really is an ideal day out, from taking a trip around the museums,

to eating in Oxford’s best restaurants, with a discount!!. So what are you waiting for?

Frog Orange Party opened its doors in Jericho on the old Partymania site inFebruary this year. Partners Rebecca and Lucy Lee-Allen bought Partymania fromJessica Dove and have stamped their Frog Orange ‘look’ in the heart of Jericho.

Partymania had been Oxford’s Premier Party shop and was trading for 31 years. Whatmade the Frog Orange girls decide to invest? “It was too good an opportunity to turndown. It was a fabulous shop but it needed new energy, something we’ve got lots of!Also our existing shop (Frog Orange in Headington) and balloon business(www.frogorangeballoons.co.uk) was bursting at the seams and we needed more space. The shop looks so fresh now and the feedback we’ve had has been amazing”.

Aside from the drastic change of image what else has changed? Well they still have ahuge array of partyware, tableware, make up and fancy dress to buy or hire, but theyalso now sell stunning cards and giftware. Perhaps the biggest difference though is theballoons. I’ve never seen such amazing helium balloons. They put lots of little balloonsinside bigger ones to create what they call ‘gumballs‘, and they personalise their foilballoons with beautiful handwritten glitter. These balloon bouquets are delivered allover Oxfordshire in their very own balloon wagon! What fun! “We also provideprofessional balloon decor at events all over Oxfordshire and beyond, we’ve evenprovided 20 foot balloons columns for The Odeon in Leicester Square. Balloon-wisethere is nothing we can’t do. Just ask, we’ll find a way!” Lucy is a Certified Balloon Artist(CBA) and has had much of her work shown in bridal and trade magazines.

Fireworks are sold all year round (they hold a special licence for this) which is handyespecially for weddings or for this year’s Jubilee and Olympic celebrations. It’sinteresting to note too that they stock the Kimbolton range of fireworks. “They are amuch better firework than what you can typically buy in the supermarkets and theyhave a real following, lots of people ask for them by brand and won’t accept any other. We do sell other brands though, it’s important to offer a choice. We also offer advicein terms of what might be suitable for your garden size or age range of guests andsafety advice of course.”

“One of the key differences between us and other party shops is not only our range ofproduct, but our product knowledge. We specialise in certain areas, not just balloons andfireworks but also professional theatrical make up and historical fancy dress. You canget a Superman outfit anywhere but not many shops stock Tudor, Elizabethan andVictorian outfits and accessories. We do.”

Oxford’s Premier Party shop’s name may have changed and the ownership transferredbut there is no doubt it remains the best place in Oxfordshire for all things Party. Longlive Frog Orange Party!

Apart from decent food of course, a dining experience is made all the moreenjoyable by meeting owners who have a real passion for their business.

None more so than Ali Amzed. Almost single-handedly, without doubt backed up byattentive and well informed colleagues. Ali has made this part of Summertown his own, imprinting a stamp of excellence and great service. If you need a good meal and ageneral lift, look no further than Ali. Not only will you leave Saffron replete, you’ll alsoleave with a smile on your face.

And whereas many restaurants will add annoying charges for this and that, Ali will addvalue, add dishes and add to your overall experience.

Kids? Most welcome. We took three of them. Chicken Korma’s are normally the orderof the day – I can’t talk, I was 32 by the time I kicked the habit! But this time, Alibrought the kids out of their ‘Korma shells’ and we were all indulged in a veritable feast. There was hardly room left on the table.

Here’s a selection of what we had:Starters – a mixed dish, beautifully prepared, including the following delicious treats –lamb tikka, Suffiany Kebab (minced lamb, skewered and chargrilled in the tandoor over),meat samosas, Jinga Moni Puree (King prawns cooked with spices served with a sliceof fresh pineapple on fried Indian bread), and Grilled Ribs.

Mains –Chicken Rogan - North Indian dish with tomatoes, green peppers, onions and a touchof garlic. Chicken Korma – well we had to have at least one, for old time’s sake! - Amild dish cooked in cream, almond & coconut. Sigdi Chicken - Chicken marinated inspice, cooked in chef's own special recipe (medium) Sikandari Badi Lamb - This is avery exotic Indian dish, shank of lamb marinated with herbs and spices then roasted inthe oven. King Prawn Jalfrayzi – or ‘Jinga’ – Stir fried highly spiced with fresh greenchilies & coriander. (HOT!!!!). Chicken Passanda – in a delicate mild creamy saucewith almond powder & red wine

You really can’t go wrong at Saffron. We were served dutifully throughout and theattention we received was remarkable given this was a busy Friday night, just beforeChristmas. Saffron is a lively, contemporarily designed restaurant, with a beautiful flowwith a couple of individual eating areas aside from the main room. This enables you toalmost enjoy your own private enclave, akin to having your own dinner party in public.

The wonderful all round Saffron dining experience has been recognised with a numberof awards, including the Top 30 Best in Britain (BIBA) and a Gold Award from QualityFood Online Ltd, all of which are fully deserved. The restaurant frequently hosts charityevents, supporting charities such as Child Reach International and Helen and DouglasHouse. Over twelve years, Saffron has become a firm favourite for the inhabitants ofSummertown and beyond. Why not join in the fun?

Winner of the Asian category in this year’s Oxfordshire Restaurant Awards,

Majiliss, found on Cowley Road, brings a new feel to Indian Cuisine without losing

the traditional experience. Ran by four brothers, this modern Indian restaurant

provides a calm welcoming environment for all to enjoy.

On arrival, I was immediately greeted with a warm smile from Loylu and his fellow

staff members. The scent of lilies’ filled the dining room where you cannot help but

admire the modern feel that they have brought to the place.

Once seated, we were presented with poppadoms which were served with a variety of

dips, including mango chutney, cucumber and mint, and spicy tomato. I wasn’t going

to complain, as it was the perfect way to start. Freshly cooked starters of vegetable

samosas, Shami kebab, and Onion bhaji followed.

After the pure quality of the starters, I was anticipating a wonderful main course. I had

chosen the Chicken Korma, a coconut based curry, described to me as the “one of a kind

curry.” My guest selected a chicken and spinach madras, a curry hot enough to

challenge anyone’s taste buds. Alongside this, we had basmati rice, which was perfectly

prepared. The portion sizes were also something to be admired - you most certainly

won’t be leaving with room to breathe. We washed it all down with Kingfisher, a strong

Indian beer.

The menu features the finest, freshest ingredients and that definitely shows. With each

course, the steaming dishes arrived promptly, with friendly and efficient service. The

food comes in generous portions, and can be made as spicy, or non-spicy, as you like-

and the extensive menu means there is plenty of choice for meat eaters, fish eaters, and

vegetarians alike. Our food, which covered all of these groups, had just the right balance

and variety of flavours, and was spicy without being overwhelmingly so.

In my opinion, Majliss has brought a new dimension to Cowley Road. The staff open

their doors to all members of the public with a smile on their faces. This is most

definitely an Indian restaurant that you cannot miss!!
