that was once property of the Baron of Alvito. The historical Pousada reflects the combined influences of military architecture, as it was a fortress, and its character as a palatial residence, with Islamic, Gothic and “Manueline” styles influences. The result of these different styles is so interesting, that the building has been classified a National Monument since 1910. The design of the bucolic gardens of the Alvito Castle combines the spacious agricultural areas with the leisure corners of Medieval Castles. As an historical village, Alvito has a vast and very beautiful heritage to be

discovered. Start with the Castle hosting the Pousada itself, visit the Clock Tower, appreciate the characteristic doors and windows in “Manueline” style and then proceed to the Azinhal Bridge and the

“Pelourinho” (Pillory). If you are fond of religious traditions and

architecture, the points of interest are endless. The São Sebastião Hermitage, the Mother Church, the Santo António Church, the Santa Luzia Hermitage and

Viewpoint and the Convent of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires are an absolute must. On a different note, the Rossio

Caves are one of the natural wonders of Alvito.
