Greeting from Mel and Linda Vogt (with grandson Joe Thraen)

We have been busy this last month. We attended the Iowa State Motorcycle Safety Forum inDes Moines, Iowa. That was very interesting, informative, fun, had several vendors, lots of prizes, and provided wonderful snacks and a huge lunch. What more could you ask for?

We made a one (really long) day trip to South Dakota to scout out a place to stay during our Great Escape coming up in August. We got everything planned with all the places to stop for gas, rest stops, and lunch and so on. After getting home, I changed my mind about where to stay and decided it was a longer ride than I had hoped, so the leave time would need to be earlier. That means some stops and the lunch stop will need to changed, we can’t be having lunch at 10:30 am!!! Needless to say, Mel and I will get to visit South Dakota again in the next few weeks to work out further details. At least the new accommodations should be nice since it is right on the lake. Good thing we like to go places.

Costume winners Brian Sower and Jo Allen

We had a wonderful time at the Iowa State Spring Rendezvous. It began with a great breakfast, some went on rides while others visited, there were games, raffles, auctions, drawings, and concluded with a very tasty evening meal. The theme was “down on the farm”. Below are a few pictures.

Runners up Pam and Bob Beveridge

We just attended a graduation party for our grandson, Joe Thraen, (pictured with us above). We are proud to say that Joe received a 4 year academic scholarship to Buena Vista College at Storm Lake, IA, where he will also be playing football.

Iowa State Director, Karen Green, thanks all

Enjoy some time out riding and stay safe,

Mel and Linda Vogt

Event Date/Time Monday, June 16, 2014 City Everywhere State U.S.A. Event URL www.ridetowork.org

Event Description Ride your motorcycle or scooter on this day to demonstrate: * The number of motorcyclists to the general public and to politicians. * That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life. * That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities. * That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation. * That motorcycling is a social good. Ride to Work Day was inspired by "Work to Ride - Ride to Work'" marketing materials created between 1989 and 1991 by the Aero Design and Manufacturing Company, a Minnesota based manufacturer of motorcycle riders clothing. In 1992 these items inspired motorcycle magazine editor Fred Rau to write an editorial calling for a national ride to work day. The first annual Ride to Work Day event was proposed in Road Rider magazine (now titled Motorcycle Consumer News) in the May 1992 issue. This is an excerpt from that "Ride to Work" editorial: "You may remember several months ago when Bob Carpenter, commenting in his 'Two Up' column, mentioned how neat he thought it would be if there was one day a year when everyone who owned a motorcycle used it to ride to work. That comment was prompted by a T-shirt produced by Aerostich RiderWear that simply said, 'Work To Ride, Ride To Work.' Everyone seemed to think that a national 'Ride To Work' day was one heck of a good idea." The first Ride to Work Day event date was July 22nd, 1992. For several years various motorcycle businesses informally promoted every third Wednesday in July as Ride To Work Day. These early advocates included Road Rider Magazine, Dunlop Tires, and Aerostich/Riderwearhouse. The event continued to grow as an informal grass roots demonstration every year until 2000. That year a non-profit organization, Ride to Work was formed to help organize and promote Ride to Work Day. The first Ride to Work Day event led by this group was the third Wednesday in July of 2001. This day was the annual day until 2008, when it was changed to the Third Monday In June. This change was made to climatically better accommodate riders world-wide, and to give more riders an opportunity to participate.

Hi Everyone, This is one of those months that I am having a problem about my topic for this article. I am going to make this a brief one and talk about what the Rider Education Program will be doing at Gold Rush in July.

1. There will be a meeting of all the Rider Education Directors so I ask you to bring your questions.

2. We will be conducting the Co-Rider

Seminar. If you are a Co-Rider and have not participated in this seminar in the past I ask you to come. there is a lot of valuable information about what makes you a better person in the bike behind the rider. I also encourage the rider to come as they are able to learn how to help a Co-rider become a better passenger.

3. We will be conducting the Skills Seminar on

the bikes. This is a simple course but designed to remind all of us what the critical skill are for riding.

4. I will be having another seminar which is

still to be determined. Last year I did one on the Aged Rider but want to pick another this year.

If you have never been involved in the GWTA Rider Education Program come to Gold Rush and see what we are all about. A good part of the time I will be in the Registration Area to answer your questions and get you signed up for the program. See you all at Gold Rush. Doug Green, National Rider Education Director.

Go With the Adventure of GWTA and Region F

“The Region where the F stands for Fun.” Region F is here to WELCOME you! We are so excited that Gold Rush XXVII will be right here in Region F once again! We are always proud to show off our region and the membership of Michigan GWTA is especially proud to show off their state. If you were here a couple of years ago, you know that we have great rides, fantastic sites and the weather, though unpredictable at times, was PERFECT the last time we were here and promises to be so this year as well! Of course a large part of the Gold Rush trip is just that………the trip! Think of the great parts of this United States of America that you may enjoy on the trip to and from the Gold Rush destination each year. Gold Rush is for seeing our friends from across the US and Canada that we only get to see once a year, but it is also about experiencing and investigating new and favorite parts of the country. We sure hope that you have your registration for Gold Rush and are planning to take a week or so this summer to enjoy the best parts of GWTA. This year Region F will be hosting many events at Gold Rush and we would like to take the opportunity to give you a little peek at what you can expect and plan on from Region F. The Great Lakes Wings Drill Team is excited to once again present a program for your enjoyment to demonstrate those heart stopping maneuvers that they

practice so hard to perfect. They will also be assisting with the Iron Eagle competition, which they have done for the past several years as well. You ask… “What is Iron Eagle?!” The Iron Eagle is an advanced riding skills competition that is truly a challenge for those that decide to participate. This year will be no different! The skills competition will be divided into four classifications; GL1800, GL1500, GL1000/1100/1200 and all other bikes. It is a true challenge to ride and an opportunity to display the expert in each of you! Not only will you have the opportunity to display what you are “great” at doing, but it may also provide some new skills to increase your riding ability. Check your schedule of events when you arrive at Gold Rush so you won’t miss this opportunity to see and BE the best! Maybe you will return to your home the proud recipient of the IRON EAGLE! Region F will also be leading the craft class. As this year is a Mardi Gras theme and Region F has had a warm up, of sorts, at their own Region F mid-winter weekend, we will be leading the participants in an opportunity to make FANTASTIC Mardi Gras masks. You could come with some great ideas, but we will have what you need to make a great mask to use during our Mardi Gras events at Gold Rush. Here is a picture of Tony and Anna Edwards and Bob and Kim Davis making masks for the Region F mid-winter weekend! It was LOTS of fun!

Region F is also proud to host the observation ride to the Lumberman’s Monument which will be most of the day and will provide you a great ride to one of the landmarks of the state. Be sure to check your schedule when you get to Gold Rush and you will see that the ride will leave at 9:00 am and plan to be gone for the day, so come with a full belly and a full tank of gas and be ready to RIDE! Boyne Mountain is also very excited to have GWTA visiting the area and will be offering lots of fun at the resort and in town. We can all look forward to the Street Party, the light parade, light show and lots of things to do at the Street Party!

There will also be a fun night at one of the local casinos where we will be having a costume contest so be sure to come prepared with your best Mardi Gras costume! The masks you make at the craft class will come in handy at that time Of course, Bob claims he is planning to only wear Mardi Gras beads! We’ll see! So, be sure to make your plans and reservations to come to Gold Rush and find out if Bob is only wearing beads!

Hello from REGION E, Here it is June and half the year is gone, but RIDING SEASON HAS ARRIVED! Kansas on the other hand is not sure what season it is in. Many just start out riding in the cool weather then shed the coat later in the day or vice versa. I hope everyone is ready for Gold Rush. Kelly and I can’t wait with the Mardi Gras theme as it is a great chance to be creative. GWTA has a lot of CREATIVE members. If you have not been to Gold Rush you are missing out on a great event. Kelly and I would like to share some of the ways we try to recruit new members.

1. Always see all riders as potential members. (We recruited a member at the post office)

2. Have information about GWTA with you. a. Membership forms b. Business cards 3. When going for rides wear a GWTA club shirt. 4. Put up a flyer about GWTA (with

permission) at all motorcycle shops, grocery stores, facebook, and any free publications. We find these steps take little effort and could produce 1 new member that could lead to more members. If any GWTA members are in the REGION E area gives us a little notice, we would love to show you a great ride. Even if it is to the local ICE CREAM STORE.

How's your chapter doing? I was recently reading an article in the „Rider Magazine’, (April 2014 edition). It was by Clement Salvadori, a well-known columnist and respected writer. He was writing about accidents. A very interesting article and I recommend that all read it when they can. In this article he was quoting another writer, who said that motorcycle accidents were increasing at alarming rates. But what this author failed to mention was that motorcycle registrations were increasing at even a greater rate. So Mr. Salvadori did some research. He noted that motorcycle registrations doubled from 2000 to 2012, going from 4,346,000 to nearly 9 million, and fatalities went from 2,900 to almost 5,000 during the same time period. Although one fatality is too many it shows a definite decrease in fatalities per 1000 riders. He also went back to the 1960,s and started quoting numbers from there forward. Basically there were 1.2 deaths per 1000 riders. In five years it was 1.1. by the year 2000 this number had dropped to .67. In 2010 it was .55 and in 2011 .54. In general this is a good news bad news situation. While we hate to see the fatality figures rising, we can reassure ourselves that the numbers per 1000 rider is decreasing. Using Mr. Salvadori's research I would like to spin these numbers in a different direction. That is in the direction of organization memberships. Many motorcycle organizations have their membership numbers decreasing and why is this. Some of my discussions with other riders/members think the decline is due to the recession that we have been going through

during this time period (2000-2012). I have always maintained that the recession has had very little to do with it. Here is the reason why. If the number of registrations doubled, 4.3 million to 9 million, during this time period, and memberships have dropped 30 to 40 percent, what is the real problem? They should also be increasing. I have a theory, I guess we all do, but mine is complicated and I hope I can get my point across here. Years ago I read a report that stated most clubs have a life span of 5 years. If your organization has lasted more than that, you can consider it a success. If yours didn't, you probably noticed that during that time the membership grew, then leveled off, then began a decline. The organization finally becomes extinct. I don't care if the organization is road or off road, whether they are a racing, touring, cruising, motocross, trials, etc., they all have one thing in common. There is a social atmosphere, especially in the case to touring organizations. Most riders gravitate to others who have the same or similar interests. That social atmosphere disappears when the riders interest moves on to something else. While most of us probably don't give it much thought, we tend to socialize with people in our own age group, plus or minus 10 years. It is desirable to have new, younger members enter the group in order to sustain the ongoing organization and inject new blood into the process. But it is hard to get a person to become a member that is 10 plus years younger than the average age of the existing membership. In a short note; “Why would I want to ride with a bunch of old fogies?” We old fogies take a different slant on this, but we should be aware of this and be recruiting new blood into the organization?

As we age it gets more and more difficult to find new potential members in our own age group to join, but, the numbers show, there are plenty of new younger riders out there. We need to recruit these younger riders as members and make them feel part of the family and allow them to assume the leadership. Regardless of their prior experience most touring riders enter this stage of their riding career somewhere between the age of 45 to 55 after the kids have graduated. These younger riders need to be educated as to the benefits of organizations and how they fit into the development of this great sport. As new younger members get involved they will in turn recruit more people their own age and hopefully reverse this trend of declining membership. I rode on my two wheels for years before I realized that there were others out there with similar interests. I just had a few friends that I rode with and never really understood the real magnitude of our wonderful sport. Once I did become aware of various motorcycle organizations, I found a new source of camaraderie, I learned this was a source of technical information, safety information, places to go, sites to see. The best most important asset of these organizations is the friendships that are created. If it wasn't for the organization, our chance of meeting new friends would be a slight chance at best. That in itself is worth the price of membership. When a motorcycle group organizes and becomes a club, it is because the membership has one thing in common, the motorcycle. You add the social atmosphere and other things begin to develop. There are rallies, poker runs, charities,, and the list goes on. When you include the co-rider into the formula other activities surface as their primary interest may not be the motorcycle,

but the person operating it. Now we are talking dinners, rallies, charities, bake sales, garage sales, mall shows, etc. As social atmosphere grows many organizations branch out in different directions, sometimes to the extent of losing sight of the common denominator, the motorcycle. Sometimes it is necessary for individual riders to join more than one organization, in order to accomplish their individual needs. Each organization specializes and not one of them offers everything. Our organization is centered around touring, and social activities. Regardless each and every chapter offers the social atmosphere needed to promote their particular interests. I cannot emphasize enough that we need to encourage younger membership and listen to them and their desires on how the association should operate. Incorporate what they would like, while hanging on to some of the old traditional activities we are all used to. After all nobody wants to give up “Dirty Bingo”. We don't all have to do the same thing except create an atmosphere where everybody co-exists, and participate in the activities that suit them best. Maybe the end result will be an organization forming, enjoying its own success, then fading away only to have a new organization appear with a new group of members to repeat the process. And the cycle goes on. Are you going to let this happen?
