Linda and Mel Vogt-National Family of the Year 2013-2014

Well, the holidays are behind us. I sure hope you had Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We enjoyed the entire time. The weather was cooperative, no blizzards this year. Although, one of the best times we had was when the kids were all snowed in at our house due to a blizzard on Christmas Eve. Santa was very good again this year. We must have been really good!!! This is a picture of our GWTA Nebraska Chapter Z at the Christmas get together. We had a very nice potluck.

For New Year’s, our group rents a cabin together and spends the time playing cards, games and just having fun. Of course there is lots of snacks and goodies. Maybe I will have some pictures available by the next issue. We are also planning an overnight winter getaway in February right after Valen-tine’s Day. It is another enjoyable time for our chapter to do something when we need to pass time because we can’t be out riding.Mel had rotator cuff surgery but has done extremely well. He is most worried about being ready to ride again by spring. The doc assures him he will be ready. Sure hope so because he is raring to go but still a few months to wait for it to warm up.What with the holidays and all, there really isn’t much news for now. Stay safe,Mel and Linda Vogt

13TOURING NEWS

I ran across an article last month titled “12 Things Happy People Do Differently” that was very interesting. One of my 2014 resolutions is to focus on these; after all, who doesn’t want to be happy? Here they are, with a Gold Winger/GWTA twist.

Express Gratitude: Be sure to thank the people who work behind the scenes to make fun runs, chapter activities and state events run smoothly.

Cultivate Optimism: No matter how dark the rain clouds are, remember you are having more fun on the motorcycle ride than you would be at home cleaning the stove.

Avoid Over-Thinking and Social Comparison: Don’t spend time worrying that your helmet hair looks worse than all the others. Just slap on a baseball cap and smile.

Practice Acts of Kindness: Leave a good tip for the Leslie Depot waiter.

Nurture Social Relationships: Go the extra mile to make it to chapter meetings, potlucks and events. Learn something new about every chapter member.

Learn to Forgive: Harbor no ill feelings when the group ride leader finds a gravel road.

Increase Experiences: Pull over and take a few extra minutes to enjoy a beautiful sunset instead of worrying about getting home before dark.

Savor Life’s Joys: Take in the moment when you win the 50/50.

Commit to Your Goals: Get out and ride! Increase your motorcycle mileage by 10% from last year.

Practice Spirituality: I’ll leave this one up to you.

Take Care of Your Body: Eat a salad prior to enjoying the ice cream.

Are you in with me on these?!

Enjoy The Day! Chris Larson, Your Sunshine Lady

14 January 2014

Hi Everyone,

Oh my goodness it is 2014 – where did 2013 go. It seems the older we get the faster time goes by. Since time does go by so fast, it should already be time to start planning for our 2014 Rides. In some areas of the Coun-try that might not seem necessary right now today, but the snow and ice will melt and riding season will be here before we know.

Unfortunately, here in California we are not worried about the snow and ice but the lack of rain. Where I live in Boulder Creek our seasonal normal is 60 inches with the rainy season from July 1st to June 30th. So far this season we have had 2.20 inches of rain. This is not the first year with a lack of rain so we worry more about fires, as everything is so dry. Even though we have not had the rain we have had some pretty cold tempera-tures – not like the Northeast but cold for here. This means my bike is still in the garage, as I don’t like riding in the cold particularly. In addition, I need to replace my water pump due to a leak.

During the winter, if your bike is stored in a nice warm place, is a good time to go over the maintenance check-list and make sure you have no leaks, good tires, fresh oil, and anything else that might need attention when the garage is opened. This might also be a good time to schedule a shop visit if necessary. This is part of the planning process we should all go through so when we can start riding the bike is ready.

While we are not able to go out and ride, is also a good time to get the maps out and start planning our rides for the year – like to Boyne Falls for Gold Rush. I have a 2014 “Bucket List” of 7 things I would like to accom-plish this year. I will start by completing my first event registration at mid-night on New Years Eve. I plan to ride the 39th Annual Three Flags Classis Motorcycle Tour over Labor Day Weekend in September and they open their registration on 1/1/2014 – it is fun to see what Rider Number I can get. It may seem like a long time away but it will be here before we know. I am also already registered for Gold Rush. I like to start my plans early as it gives a goal to shoot towards and makes sure I complete all the safety items I need to take care like:

Bike maintenancePhysical issues – if anyNew Helmet if necessaryNew Clothing if necessaryNew Bike if necessary – you mean Santa didn’t bring you one?

I hope to see you all in Boyne Falls at Gold Rush and hope wherever you go this year that your rides are safe.

Take care,Doug Green

A Life In The Days Of A Biker Pt. 13By: Dave Norton - Region A, Chapter M, Mountain Valley Riders.

16 January 2014

Part 13: Show Time! We left Dave last time having built the Shrike and proved its workability, now it’s time for some fun… After seven years on the road with Shrike II, we have covered 60,000 more miles, entered 29 car/bike shows (earning 12 awards including one Best of Show), half a dozen parades, an SCCA Solo II Autocross, a drag race and a Track Day at Willow Springs. At car and bike shows the Shrike is usually “not the ‘droid they’re looking for”, being neither fish nor fowl: neither a car at a bike show or a motorcycle at a car show. There are times when it’s unique concept: increased safety, low budget construction, and blend of high performance and low fuel consumption catch the judge’s eye. Our second year at the Knott’s 2-day Kit Car Show in May of ’04 was a wet one. Less than half the cars showed up the second day due to the rain. On Sunday morning I drove in past the sheltered judge’s booth in pouring rain, obviously soaked to the gills, to a standing ovation by the judges. At the award ceremony we won Second Place behind a mega-dollar Lamborghini clone that also won Best of Show. The accepted behavior at these events is to accept one’s award with casual coolness. When my name was called I whooped and did a jig. I overheard one of the judges say “I like that guy.”

Rain was a factor at the Spring Temecula Rod Run in ’04 as well:

Shrike and I had an especially enjoyable day at the Big Bike Weekend in Redding in ’09:

There was a professional photographer doing a shoot with three cheesecake models and a chopper. When they finished, the girls came over and asked if they could use the Shrike for a shoot. We did, and had a great time:

Over the years I get the biggest kick out of hoiking kids in and out of the Shrike at shows so Mom and Dad could take their picture:

I have to believe that, some day, some guy or gal will use that memory in deciding to do something odd and interesting as well. My own memories of riding in the side hack on Dad’s ’55 Harley FLH (felt just like a fighter cockpit) and driving the H-Modified and Lotus formula 3 cars weighed heavily in the design process. Looking back on the Shrike project, I find it has exceeded my expectations. My initial intent was to recapture most of the fun of motorcycling but with increased safety, with a vehicle that would outlast my ability to drive. It has done that, but along the way it has become my alter-ego. I have become it, and it is me. The Shrike has become the perfect expression of who I am. I tell folks I’ll drive it until it dies or I die, and I hope the two are not coincident. My parting shot is directed to any youngster with a keen interest in things mechanical. Study hard, become an engineer, and build your own dream.

It’s SO worth it! And that, dear reader, about sums it up. We have, at long last, come to…

The End! nortonshrike.com [email protected] Dave Norton

Norton Shrike, aged 30 years, passed away at 2:37 PM, February 14, 2013 in Grants Pass, Oregon. Mr. Shrike was conceived, born and reared in San Diego, California in 1983, and has resided in La Mesa, Mira Mesa and Temecula, CA until his relocation to his last residence in Rogue River, Oregon in 2007. During his career he performed in 39 shows across the Pacific Coast, earning 20 awards, and enjoyed a brief racing career including events in Carlsbad and Willow Springs, CA, and Medford, OR. During his many adventures he had travelled a total of 150,372 miles, and from San Diego, CA to Seattle, WA. Autopsy shows a severe degenerative congenital failure of the rostral terminus of the medial frame rail at the juncture of the distal end of the caudal primary conjunctive element due to undiagnosed severe internal ferrous degeneration. Said degeneration is attributed to the unexplained failure to exclude external fluids from internal passages during the prenatal period. Historical data indicates two previous occurrences of similar failures in less critical locations. These instances were noted but considered to be idiopathic. Death occurred instantaneously while Mr. Shrike was being transported across a macadam surface at a velocity of approximately 2 mph coincidental with the application of maximum steering lock. Mr. Shrike is survived by father David Norton and mother Necessity, and by two known illegitimate offspring, one residing in Manitoba Canada and the other in central Connecticut. Lineage has been traced to scion Morgan Trike of Worchester England in 1910. In addition, physiologic similarities indicate a high probability of evolutionary progression to at least two presumed progeny, C. A. Spyder and T. Rex, both of central Canada. This conjecture is unsupported due to the lack of independent DNA studies. Services for the deceased will be held at an undisclosed time and location. Various organs will be removed and placed into a condition of stasis pending transplant to deserving recipients. The eternal rusting place is to be on a sylvan hillside in Rogue River, Oregon overlooking his last residence, BillyGoat Mountain Ranch. Interment provided by John Deere. The Shrike is dead. Long live the Shrike. May you Rust In Piece

24 January 2014

Hello to All,

We hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and may have all the best in the coming new year. Our chapter had our Christmas dinner last weekend and had a wonderful time with a great pot luck dinner, a gift exchange, and a couple of games of dirty bingo. Our chapter directors for the past 5 years, John and Janet Eubank, agreed to remain as Directors. Many thanks to them. They do a terrific job for all the members. Many chapters put on a popular bear run on New year’s day. Chapter A, Ks use to, but after the weather was too bad to ride for a couple of years, we decided to try a ground hog day ride last year. That worked out pretty good so that’s what we are doing this year. Just hoping the weather holds out for us this time and we get a good ride in.

There are not too many days where the weather will still let us ride, but once in a while a decent day will pop up and we can get the bikes out. Here in Wichita, KS we are having a couple of those days now and I plan on enjoying a ride. If you do get out remember to watch the road surface. We have had some rough weather here already and there is a lot of sand down on the streets. If you do get out also be careful to watch out for Christmas shoppers who have their minds somewhere else and not on their driving. Happy New Year and can’t wait to see everyone next year in Michigan!

Ride Safe and Ride Often,Kelly and Donna FelixRegion E Directors
