Student Achievements Well done to Tahlia, Meg, Ruby and Amelia, who were all successful in winning soloist positions for the Riverland Music Festival. Great effort girls! Well done to the children who represented ‘Divine Speed’ at the Pedal Prix recently. It was fantastic to see you compete with a high level of determination and sportsmanship. Our sincere thanks is extended to Emma, Ben, Mr Mills and all parents who assisted with the organisation, training and running of the team. Training has started for the event in Adelaide. Well done to the students from LLS who participated in the SA School Sport (formerly known as SAPSASA) Netball and Football Carnivals last Friday. Our LLS netball team finished second in our division, with Jessica, Bailey and Briella all making the initial squad to trial for the Riverland Team. Thanks to Anne and Michelle for their coaching & organisation of the team. The Loxton District Football Team finished first overall, not losing a game for the day. NAPLAN NAPLAN testing begins this week for our Year 3, 5 and 7 students. All tests except the Year 3 Writing test will be completed online. To support your child during this time parents can do the following: Make sure your children get enough sleep Encourage them to do their best Where possible, ensure healthy meals

and snacks Talk positively about the tests (regardless

of your own personal views or position) Make sure children are at school on time Continental Meeting A Continental Meeting is being held tomorrow night at 7pm in the Staff Room. Any parent wishing to join the committee is encouraged to come along.

Dear Parents, I sincerely hope that each of the mums reading our Happenings had a fantastic Mother’s Day yesterday. I hope that you were spoilt by your children and had some great family time. Thank you to the many mum’s and special guests who attended our Mother’s Day event on Friday afternoon. It was heart-warming to see so many people here being pampered and doted on by the children. My thanks is also extended to the many staff who assisted to organise the event. Staffing News Mrs Jenni Sander begins placement in the Year 3/4 class this week. We wish her every blessing. Learning and Teaching We have had another great week with our Literacy Coach, Ms JoAnne Dooner. Teaching and LSO staff spent the Student Free Day learning about Writing; the three types of writing, the ten parts of writing and how to teach block planners to organise writing. Links were made throughout to our previous work around Cognitive Load Theory and Schema Theory. From Tuesday-Thursday, JoAnne and Trish spent a lot of time conducting formal observations of teacher’s as they delivered their Morning Routine and Phonics lessons. They then each received feedback that will continue to enhance their teaching and improve learning outcomes for children. On Tuesday night, approximately 25 parents attended our Parent Information Night. JoAnne provided some details as to how we will be teaching writing here at school, the different elements of writing and how reading supports writing. She also introduced and explained a lot of the vocabulary around phonics. This session was recorded, so any parents who weren’t able to make it along but would like to view it are asked to contact the school. Friday was a planning day, where Trish, JoAnne and I spent a lot of time discussing and planning our next steps and all that is required to be able to achieve them.

Library

Scholastic Book Club: Issue No 3 Scholastic Book Club catalogues and order forms were sent home in Week 1. The orders from this catalogue must be handed in by Friday 17th May. Sorry, late orders are not able to be accepted. Orders can also be placed online, until this date, using the LOOP system at

https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/Login.aspx . If the order is a gift for your child, please

ensure that the “GIFT” option is selected when you place your online order. This will ensure that the ordered items are given directly to you, the parent , rather than your child. lf using the paper order form attached to the catalogue, please ensure that names and any cash payments enclosed are the exact amount. If the items are a gift for your child, please place the order in your own name and include your phone number. You will then be contacted to collect the order yourself. Thank you to parents and families for your ongoing support of the Scholastic Book Club through our school. The benefits can be seen by the extra books that Scholastic donate to our library, providing greater reading options for students.

How is your child going with the Premier’s Reading Challenge? Completed Premier’s Reading Challenge Record sheets are starting to trickle in. Here is an update on how the classes are going: Rec HW—reading as a whole class Rec FY—3 students Year 1—reading as a whole class Year 4/5—1student Year 2—2 students Year 5/6—1 student Year 3/4– 3 students Year 7—0 students Understandably, it takes the older students longer to complete the challenge as the books in their age range are usually thicker. Please continue to encourage your child to keep the momentum going and to complete the challenge as soon as possible. As part of our school’s “Get Reading Right” program, the goal is for students to be involved in reading 5 times a day. How many students can then complete the PRC before the end of Term 2, we wonder? All students’ recording sheets need to be handed up before BOOKWEEK 2019 (August 16th 2019).

Resources to help select quality, well-written books to read. Regularly, staff working in the school library are asked by students, parents and teachers for recommendations of books to read. Whilst we have read many and can base our recommendations on what we, ourselves, have read, there are also many resources available which can provide information to help in the selection of quality, entertaining books either for your child to read or for adults to read aloud to them. Books nominated for the 2019 Children’s Book of the Year awards are listed on the Children’s Book Council website https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2019 These are quality Australian books. The school

library has many of these book titles. Another website which reviews children’s books is the Children’s Book Council’s Reading Time. http://

readingtime.com.au/ . This website can help parents, students and teacher select age appropriate,

quality children’s books according to text type and themes. It also provides a book review by a professional reviewer to help in that selection. Happy Reading Margaret Wormald Teacher/Librarian

Choir News and Solo Audition Results Congratulations to Meg, Dakota, Ruby, Tahlia, Amelie, Claire, Trinity and Lila who recently auditioned for solos for the Riverland Primary Schools Music Festival Choir. They proved worthy ambassadors for our school and put in many hours of preparation both at home and school lunchtimes. Auditions were held at Loxton Primary School, at the end of last week, in front of a selection panel from different schools. Students from all Loxton district schools and two Renmark schools auditioned for the various solo parts on offer. We are pleased to announce that Ruby, Amelie, Tahlia and Meg from our school were offered solo parts for the choir performance in August. It was lovely to see the excitement that fellow-choir members showed for each other when this was announced. Student compere auditions are being held at Loxton Lutheran School at the next regional rehearsal on 29th May. Congratulations to all members of the school choir who rehearse enthusiastically every Wednesday lunchtime. We have a talented and committed group of singers from each of the senior classes and we look forward to being able to perform for the school soon.

On Friday of week 2, SAPSASA Football and Netball ran at the Berri football club and netball club. Nine girls represented Loxton Lutheran School in the SAPSASA Netball competition; Jessica, Quinn, Meg, Ella, Bailey, Amelie, Lilla, Dakota L and Briella. It was a sensational effort by the girls. They trained each lunch time in the fortnight leading up to the game and come game day this showed! This included our teacher vs student game. The girls managed to finish second in our division of “Medium Schools”. A large thank you goes to Tiarna and Sienna H for helping St Alberts field a side on the day. Jess, Briella and Bailey have all been selected in the initial Riverland Netball Squad. The Loxton District Football team played a very fast-moving game with many link up handballs throughout the day. All six Loxton Lutheran School boys played well and contributed throughout the day. Well done to Mackenzie, Carter, Sid, Hunter, Jasper and William. In wet and windy conditions, the boys played very well, all showing fantastic leadership and poise. Congratulations to Jasper and William for being selected in the Riverland Squad. I thank and congratulate all netball players and footballers for the way they played and conducted themselves throughout the carnival. Thank you to Anne H and Michelle P for their dedication and ensuring netball ran as smoothly as it did throughout the day. Our next SAPSASA Event is Cross Country on Wednesday of Week 4, with notes for this to come home Tuesday this week.
