AIMS

Nofreeworkwillbegivenatanylevel.Eachexaminationisintwosections:a)TechniqueAtalllevelsgoodpostureandanawarenessoftheplacementoflimbsisexpected,withthebuildupofthevocabularyofdancestepsincreasingateachlevel.AtBronzelevelagood,naturaluseofthehead,armsandbodyisencouragedtocreateaclearsenseofline,withtheopportunitytodevelopthisinsubsequentlevelstoachieveamoresophisticatedstyle.Goodspatialawarenessisencouragedatalltimes,withadevelopinguseofpatternanddirection.b)PresentationAtBronzelevelthecandidateisexpectedtobeabletointerpretthemusicwithanaturalsenseofenjoymentandanawarenessoftheaudience.InSilverandGoldthestudentisgiventheopportunitytointerpretawiderrangeofmusicalstylesthroughbothmovementandexpression.Ateachlevelthestudentwillhavegainedtheself-confidencerequiredtoperformsolo,setamalgamationsandadancearrangedbytheteacher. • Anunderstandingofthecorrectstanceandplacementwithanapplicationofjazzstyle GRADEDEXAMINATIONSINDANCEINTRODUCTIONRATIONALEModernTheatreDancemakesadistinctivecontributiontotheeducationofallstudents,throughusingmovement,whichisoneofthefundamentalmodesofhumanexpression.Itoffersarangeoflearningopportunitiesandenablesparticipantstoenjoyphysicalexpressionaswellasdevelopintellectualsensibilities.AstheyworktogetherinModernTheatreDance,candidateslearnaboutco-operationanddevelopanunderstandingoftheshapingofmovementintoartisticformsofexpression.CandidatesdeveloptheskillandunderstandingofModernTheatreDance,atthesametimeasbuildingasoundtechnique,bydevelopingthephysicalabilitytocommunicatethroughmovementinanexpressiveandartisticway.Aclearlydefinedstructureallowslearningtotakeplaceinthecontextofsafedancepractice.TheGradedExaminationsbuildupprogressively,ensuringthatstepsandskillslearnedatlowerlevelsprepareformorecomplexmovementsasthecandidateprogresses.

Also,arangeoftransferstootherdancegenresbecomespossibleasthecandidatedevelopsphysicallyandlearnscommonskillssuchasrunning,useofarms,posture,timingandrhythmicawareness.Inthisway,withadditionalteachinginput,thecandidateisabletodevelopabroadbaseofdancingskills.FollowingonfromtheGradedExaminations,candidatesmaywishtoprogresstotheVocationalGradedExaminationsaspreparationforemploymentasaprofessionaldanceroraspreparationfordanceteachingqualifications.TheGradedExaminationsinModernTheatreDancealsoallowforthoseparticipatingsolelyforrecreationalpurposestoproducequalityworkinasafedancecontext.AIMSTheaimofGradedExaminationsistoprovideanassessmentschemefordance,whichgivesthebasisforthemeasurementoftheindividualcandidate'sprogressanddevelopment,whetherthecandidateispursuingdanceasaleisureactivityoraspreparationforaprofessionalcareerasadanceteacherorperformer.Therearesixpracticalexaminationgrades,numberedfrom1to6,inordertoindicatetheincreasingorderofdifficulty(6representsthehighestlevelofattainment). • Promoteself-confidenceintheperformanceofasoloENTRYCONDITIONSANDGENERALINFORMATION AGELIMITSThereisarecommendedminimumageof6yearsforGrade1.Thisistoensurethatcandidatesarephysicallydevelopedsufficientlytosafelymeetthedemandsofthesyllabus.PRIORLEARNINGTheGradedExaminationsinModernTheatreareintendedtobetakenconsecutivelyandmostcandidateswillwishtoprogressthroughtheminsequenceinordertodevelopanddemonstratetherequisiteskills.However,incaseswhereexaminationsareundertakenwithoutsuccessatthepreviousgrade,thecandidateneedstobeatanappropriatelevelofphysicalandartisticdevelopment.BeforeacandidateenrolsinaclassleadingtoaGradedExamination,teachersareunderaparticularduty,therefore,toassesstheachievementofthecandidate,particularlywithregardtosafedancepractice.GENDERDISTINCTIONSGrade1and2:Oneortwomalecandidatesmaybeenteredwithfemalecandidates.Grade3-6:Onemalecandidatemaybeenteredwithfemalecandidateswithanadditionaltimeallowanceof10minutes.Twoormoremalecandidatesshouldbeenteredseparatelyfromfemalecandidates.Thesyllabusissuitableforbothmaleandfemalecandidatesasitisdesignedtodevelopall-roundstrengthsandabilities.Therearesomeseparateexercisesformalesandfemalesthatareintendedtodevelopthe

REASONABLEADJUSTMENTSTheISTDpolicyandprocedureforallreasonableadjustmentsforallqualificationsiscontainedwithintheEqualOpportuntiespolicyontheISTDwebsite.TheVocationalGradedExaminationsandProfessionalQualificationsaredesignedforthosewhoareintendingtopursueacareerindance,eitherasaperformerorasateacher.Itis,therefore,veryunlikelythatapotentialperformerwillrequirereasonableadjustments.However,apotentialteachermustbeabletodemonstrateallmovementsprecisely,inordertoteachthemeffectively.Asthe‘Intermediate’examinationisalsonowincludedasaunitwithintheDiplomainDanceInstruction,itislikelysomecandidateswillapplyforadjustments.Thisisbecausetheyare:

• Candidateswhodonothavesufficientphysicalfacilitytoperformthemovementsatspeedtotherequiredstandard,butwhocanneverthelessdemonstratethemataslowerpace.

Thesamecriteriaapplytocandidatesathigherlevels.SuchcandidatesmustapplytotheCustomerServicesandQualityAssuranceDepartment,usingtheApplicationforReasonableAdjustmentsform,atleastthreeweekspriortotheexaminationentry,givingdetailedreasonsfortherequest.ThiswillbeprocessedgivingtheFacultyopportunitytorefusespecialconditions,recommendadditionalexaminationtime,orgivefurtherdetailedguidance.Inprinciple,theexaminationmustnotbeweightedtogiveanadvantagetoeitherthe

candidatewithreasonableadjustmentsortheablebodiedcandidate.Thedemandsonbothmustbeequal.Reasonableadjustmentswillbegenerallygrantedforcertainspecificsectionsoftheexamination,andcandidatesshouldindicatewhichofthesectionsmightbeaffected.Candidatesshouldattemptallmovementsandthroughout,mustdancetothebestoftheirownphysicalability.Intheinterestsofsafetyandtofacilitateaccuracyofmovement,somecandidatesmayindicatetheirowntempoandmaytakeextrapausesforbreathasnecessary.Ifrequired,questionsmaybeasked,andthesewillbephrasedinsuchawayastoclarifytheknowledgeofthemechanicsofthemovement.Questioningisnotpermittedforeverysectionoftheexaminationandwouldnormallybeusedinamaximumoftwoperformancesections.TheISTDreservestherighttorefuseentrytoaparticularcandidatebecauseofareasonablebeliefthatundertakingtheexaminationwillcreatearisktothehealthorsafetyofthecandidate.Thisincludesanypregnantcandidatetakingapracticalexamination.Theexamineralsohastherighttostopanexaminationifs/heconsidersthatthereisarisktothehealthorsafetyofthecandidateiftheycontinue.PregnantcandidatesarerequestedtocompletetheApplicationforReasonableAdjustmentsformsothattheexaminercanbemadeawareoftheircondition,regardlessofanyadjustmentbeingrequested,astheexaminerneedstobeinformed,andadditionaltimeforbreaksmayalsobeappliedfor.
RESULTSANDCERTIFICATION
AllISTDexaminationsaresingleperformanceatonemomentintime,withadetailedmarkingsystemawardedaccordingtotheassessmentcriteriaandattainmentdescriptorsgivenforeachexamination.Examinersreturntheresultsandreportsheetsassoonaspossibleaftertheexamination.ThereportsheetsforeachcandidateareindividuallycheckedwithintheQualityAssurancedepartmentforadministrativeaccuracy.Under normal circumstances the report sheets forUK examinationswill be issued to the teacherwithin 21workingdaysoftheexamination.Anyerrorsfoundarecorrectedbytheexaminerpriortofurtherprocessingof the whole examination session, and may therefore extend these timings, although the department willmakeeveryefforttoprocesstheseasrapidlyaspossible.All results are entered by Sections, and checked for achieving theminimumpass levels, per Section and intotal,andcorrectlevelsofattainmentagainstthetotalmarkachieved.Results are then cleared for certificate issue, which is undertaken by the Customer Services and QualityAssurancedepartment,andshouldbewithin6to8weeksoftheexamination.Copiesofallreportsheetsandresultsareheldonarchiveforreferenceasnecessary.
RE-TAKES Candidates who are not successful may not re-take the examination until 3 months after the originalexamination.
